Posted in: Municipalities expect Tokyo Olympics to bring more foreign visitors See in context

So, over 40% still haven’t done anything about promoting themselves. I guess they fail to realize that most visitors will plan their itineraries a year in advance. Missed that boat, didn’t you?

Good Point

The same thing happened with the winter olympics in S Korea where there was a prediction that tourist were gonna go explore around the surrounding local areas.

This was not the case as tourist just stayed around the touristy areas and ate at the places they were familiar with aka McDonalds.

This is probably going to be the case with the majority of tourist staying in Tokyo and possibly making side trips to Kyoto/Osaka and completly byspassing the other prefectures.

Posted in: S Korean boycott hitting sales of Uniqlo, company says See in context

Revenue is revenue, yet 6 % is nothing to global earnings. I would be curious to see the relation of sales volume to revenue in the country.

I'm assuming that the reason for the low revenue is actually due to the cost of having 190 physical stores in the country.

I’m also assuming that the reason for 190 stores, was to maximize brand awareness and getting as much of the local populace involved in the supply chains in an attempt for brand loyalty.

So, the next step will probably be to start layoffs and closing down stores to offset the loss, which is unfortunate, due to high unemployment rate.

6 percent is nothing in scale to 190 stores, this is a lot of employed people and a lot money going into local distribution and the attached services and can actually be assumed this will have a significant impact on the country’s GDP.

Further, other foreign brands are watching closely and will face a decision whether to limit exposure to the market due to K. nationalism and the gov's inability to protect industry assets.

With high unemployment and loss of capital, the people of SK will be the real losers if Uniqlo actually ends up closing down stores.

I wonder how the SK gov. is going frame the flight of foreign capital as they watch their GDP numbers run lower and unemployment #s run higher.

@Halwick

I agree with your comment.

The world is baffled with the things that Moon says and does. They come as petty and not well thought out.

What's worse, is trying to figure out his motivation or the logic (there is none) for the things that he says and does.

He does come off as a weak and desperate leader and everybody knows that the chinese/russians love weak dumb leaders.

If I was from SK I would be ashamed to have him as the president.

Why are the Koreans threatening to scrap this deal?

Scrapping the deal doesn't make sense at all. Its a mutual beneficial agreement to share information with the emphasis on mutual meaning that both sides get an advantage.

Do they really think they can get concessions from Tokyo? Does SK actually know what it wants?

It seems that SK is knee-jerking everything without planning or rationale.

One thing is for certain the Chinese/Russians/NK are loving the divide and conquer.

"Japan and Korea each suffer consequences when their bilateral ties worsen and we believe that each bears responsibility for improvement for their relations.

Which basically means figure this out among yourselves

Calm confident words from national leaders

Is he really talking about Moon and Abe?

Diplomatic tensions intensified after a South Korean court last year ordered Japanese companies to.....

So I guess S. Korean started it first

On July 4, in apparent retaliation, Japan restricted exports of high-tech materials to South Korea, sparking a boycott by South Korean consumers of Japanese products and services.

...and the SK is angry for putting Japan in a position to retaliate

This month, South Korean President Moon Jae-in vowed that South Korea would not be "defeated again"

I don't think he knows what he is talking about and the things he says makes the NK leadership look rational and logical

Posted in: Japan's top bar association urges authorization of same-sex marriage See in context

I think the biggest problem is not the union itself but the use of the marriage contract from religion that forbids same sex marriages.

A good solution would be to really separate all religion from state.

Marriage in the eyes of the state should be redefined to civil partnerships separating marriages as a personal preferences.

This would offset any legality and perceived ethical/moral dilemmas that arise.

Did he actually mentioned "minorities" in the tweet?

Did he actually know the demographics of the city?

Or is everything he says anchored as racist?

I don't like Trump, just trying to get the facts straight.

Posted in: Japan, South Korea clash at WTO over trade dispute See in context

The individuals can do watever they want, they can sue and take it court as is part of their rights.

The courts can pass or deny a ruling as is part of their constitution.

The problem comes in when a courts decision gets backed by the national government.

Most the time when there is a local ruling against another country, it just becomes a symbolic gesture, nothing more.

But when you have inept goverment leaders who basically just pee on international norms and start making demands on other countries knowing full well that their negotiation position is low, it just makes them look foolish in the eyes of the world.

Especially when the incompetence of these leaders spillovers into the economic and industrial sectors.

Wouldnt it be nice if Korea's leaders actually had skills in international relations, then maybe they wouldn't be complaining so much about being weak.
