Posted in: Flying this holiday season? Here’s why air travel makes us so cranky See in context

As a former flight attendant for 3 different air carriers:

Just be a civilized human being. You will share your flight with everyone on board. Also, put on some decent clothing, clothes reflect who we are, how we view ourselves. Be nice.

Whether a long or short flight try to bring your best self on board and remember first and foremost cabin crew are on board for safety first, your drink or meal is secondary. Happy flying.

Posted in: Finding happiness by cutting all family ties: Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't See in context

For some families the effort necessary to communicate with, understand each other is not available or not worth effort.

Also siblings or even parents can perpetuate falsehoods so it is easier to believe untruths than actually listen to each other, offer opportunity to heal.

Posted in: Character for gold (金) picked as most symbolic kanji of 2024 See in context

Gold is ost appropriate now.

All things considered Japan has a golden culture, warts and all. What other culture has been so co opted globally in recent decades, from foods to anime, fashion, tourism?

The uniqueness of Japan society, it's members, for most part is worth the moniker. Those particularly enduring recent natural disasters are definitely deserving of gold status.

Posted in: 2 JAL pilots consume alcohol before flight, causing 3-hour delay See in context

The incident at DFW Dallas, Texas Airport resulted in the complete cancelation of a JAL flight to Haneda due to inebreation.

The cost of the incident can be imagined, plus finding flights/hotels for those left stranded by one person's behavior, in this case a JAL pilot, abusing alcohol.

I hope the pilot was given treatment for the incident, allowed recovery time, maybe job reassignment.

This is not an isolated incident for only JAL, other airlines suffer same employee trials. The position is not without stressors, not all can manage such a responsible, demanding position.

Posted in: Disaster contingency plans lagging to assist Tokyo's foreign visitors See in context

I worked in western Honshu in the late 90's. There was nothing in place at that time for foreign residents or tourists as a warning. While I lived there there was a minor quake, I had no idea what to do. Also once I was out during a typhoon and was terrified walking back to my apartment struggling to stay upright in such strong winds. There needs to be widespread info for all in English and a few other languages with present residents/tourists in Japan.

Posted in: 30% of tourists to Japan experienced overtourism problems in 2024 See in context

As Japan seeks to reach some outrageous tourism goals for 2030, beyond, it would be wise to monitor effects such goals have upon national treasured sites, as well as local Japanese citizens.

Recent defacing of temples/shrines is one great cause for concern. Some tourists think these ancient treasures, sites were put up last week by Disney.

Everyone eagerly wants to recover covid tourism yen losses, but the trade off may be quite a steep price to pay.

Posted in: Ishiba criticized in Japan for 'bad manners' at APEC summit See in context

Does Ishiba know who or where he is?

He represents the country of Japan at home and abroad. He is pictured at an event of world leaders, APEC in this case.

Does he think persons approaching him are volunteers?

He seems quite disengaged.

He's minding his cell phone? Surely his aides can inform him of any crisis at home.

Certainly a sad showing, disgrace for the country, citizens of Japan.

I hope he apologizes publicly. Call an election.

This has to be a joke. It must have been a really slow day at the office for People mag.

If he is the 'Alive' pick think I'd go for someone from the distant past, like Robert Louis Stevenson.

How very sad that Japan's push for tourism brings Disneyland type vacationers. Japan has a culture, history, herirage nigh unrivaled among global cultures. It is worth all possible to protect this culture for Japanese and for those who are able to respect how the country came to be, warts and all.

Posted in: A man's world: Japan makes tepid push on gender gap in politics as election nears See in context

What astounds me most in this scenario is the incredible capability, competentcy of 'ordinary' Japanese women I have known in Japan. Even without political experience/training, I believe they could easily serve in any administration. It boggles my mind that either they do not step up or are not allowed to.

Posted in: Hundreds gather in central London to mourn death of singer Liam Payne See in context

The person who is addicted to drugs or alcohol has no idea the pain and agony they inflict upon loved ones.

Liam's passing has brought such sadness/grief world wide. He did not realize how much he was loved. RIP Liam.

A really sad story, leaving a seven year old son, among others, to make sense of this tragedy.

There is no one to blame.

Posted in: Voters in Noto hit by quake, rain call for support to rebuild See in context

With the many opportunities all of Japan have for destruction, devastation, even loss of life one may think/hope this would be a primary focus of the government.

The German Noto resident's comments here paint a very bleak picture of Noto's many (elderly) residents. It is a very sad state of affairs as many livlihoods have been lost, onsen, fishing,

Had this tragic event occured in central Tokyo, bet the repairs would have been completed on December 31, 2023.

The super speedy trains always give me chills.

Nothing anywhere comes close to Japan's rail precision, execution and reliability, safety.

But I still smile at a Yellow One Man diesel.

Posted in: Crowds, water guns and protests: Could ‘slow tourism’ be the answer to overtourism backlash? See in context

As Japan seeks to grestly up tourist counts what is being affected in its wake is papable, not sustainable.

The bruhaha at the Instagrammable konbini for a hot shot of Fuji is one story. Residents of cities and rural areas, many elderly, are greatly, negatively affected by hordes of traveling persons with no interest in Japan's beauty, rich traditions, culture. It only taks a cheap air ticket plus a current most favorable exchange rate and TikTokers et al are off to the global zombie tourist races.

Trusting she may seek counseling for a traumatic experience.

If she is able she may well steer clear of such an unhealthy person.

Some are not so wise. Moth to flame.

If USS plans to shutter should Nippon Steel buyout not happen...a loss to both parties, but more so to US

Current USS employees are assured of keeping their jobs in buyout scenario.

As stated here, this proposed event within the election period is bad timing. Both candidates want voters to think the only way to 'make/keep America great' (again?) Is to act like foreign investment is criminal, just for these few remaining weeks.

If USS folds voters can go figure out their own solution. Nippon may not wait forever.

If Kidman keeps it up, cosmetic facial/body surgeries/augmentations, she'll be able to play a actual robot, no makeup chair necessary. At one time she was uniquely beautiful. Now hardly recognizable.

Posted in: Prince Hisahito, 2nd in line to throne, reaches adulthood See in context

That Aiko san, whom it appears has an actual job, is not allowed to be a successor, which she is, to the Japan Imperial Throne is a travesty.

There's no doubts that she is sharper than the lot of them, excluding her mother, Masako san.

Anyone notice how quickly news of Masako san's recognition/award at Oxford on recent trip to UK was buried? Can't have a female in the Palace With brains.
