@

prizjay- dont think I could make it as an ALT in that situation. More over the not being albe to save a kid from getting trashed by a bully. Sounds like you are not even allowed to break up a fight. WOW...

I was told by the school and the dispatch agency that if I intefer with an assualt and break it up and put my hands on a student...I would be fired on the spot and evicted from my apartment within 3 days and the school would bring criminal charges against me for "handling a student". They made sure it was real clear that I NEVER touched a student...ever under any circumstances. Sorry, for you people living in the wetsern world who find it impossible to believe...but this is Japan and this how they do it here.

I think schools should have something like a "contract" of behavior. This should define what is and is not acceptable, as well as punishments for offenders. The contracts should be signed by both parents and students. The rules and punishments should be enforced. If the parents or students don't like it, they should go to another school.

Contracts?? Are you serious?? This is Japan and contracts are broken all the time without penalty here. Just have a look at the consumer protection laws when students sign contracts with eikaiwa...eikaiwa didnt keep their end of the deal in the contract and left the consumer/student holding the bag. No school is going punish any bad behavior....as the principle at the school I worked at told me, "all students have a right to an education, no matter what they do".

Go to another school?? High school is not free in Japan and students parents have to pay a bundle to enroll them and buy them expensive uniforms and not to mention the complete hassle involved. Alot of these students attend such and such high school to get accepted to a good university, thats the whole point of high school in Japan. Graduating H.S. is not required in Japan.

Sorry mates, but this isn't the school's fault. This could have happened in someone's home when the parent stepped out for a second. There are only so many teachers and they need to move between home rooms, so logically at least one home room will need to be unattended at any given time, regardless of how efficiently they do it. The bully should be punished, not the teachers, unless they can show that the teachers ignored complaints from the bullied student. And I'm betting that the bullied student did nothing to help himself by speaking to a teacher. If they victim won't speak up then the teachers can't be divinely inspired.

You obviously do NOT live in Japan or know anything how the school system works here. I worked as an ALT a few years back in Shizuoka and I was assualted, threatened, my lunch got spit on by students and my bicycle vandalized....made complaints to the school about it, and was told to keep my mouth shut and take it or lose my job. If students were being assualted by another student I was ordered NOT to be involved in anyway and tell a Japanese teacher. Teachers just ignore fights and bullying here and look the other way. Assualt and bullying is TOLERATED in schools throughout Japan!! Japan is not a western country.

Posted in: Elderly woman arrested for beating youth sitting in priority seat of bus See in context

she has been warned before by police for hitting middle and high school students.

Wow..thats one tough old lady. She only got warnings for assualting other people before?? As much as I can sympathize with her, but hitting people for a priority seat or because of their age group is wrong. The cops let her violence continue with no real punishment and now some kid has a broken nose for it, AND because of the broken nose the cops will finally do their job. The cops/courts should have put a permanent stop to her behavior the first time. I place all the blame on the poilce for failure to protect the public from a violence prone loony.

Its the job of the train line to make people move out of priorty seating, but they to dont seem interested in fullfilling that duty...therefore leaving that responsibility to the public to work it out amongst themselves....to results like this. Cops dont want to do their job...the train line personel dont want to do their job = aggressive, violent passengers.

One wonders how Nature managed before humans came along and invented forest management?

Long before humans, forest fires from lightening kept alot of forests in balance.

Posted in: Japan's forestry management system a mess See in context

Im a biologist living and working in Japan and I spend alot of time in the forests here and they are an absolute mess indeed. Thinning is desperately needed here. The forests and moutains are widly overgrown and the wildlife population is out of control with deer, wild boars, monkeys and bears. The Forest Ministry is completely dsyfunctional and incompetent. If they dont want to do it, then let foreigners or whoever do it...but something really needs to be done. The forests and wildlife in this country have been badly neglected.

An article by the New York Post gave more details and eye witness statements:

"I saw Kobayashi trying to push his way through the police," a witness said. "He got to the top step, almost to the stage, but he didn't get onstage."

The muscle men put Kobayashi in a headlock and dragged him backstage. It wasn't immediately clear what Kobayashi wanted to do onstage.

"I thought he was going to congratulate Chestnut as he was lifting up his belt," one man said.

But a female witness disagreed, and chimed in: "For all I know, he was going up there to punch him out."

No matter what the situation...Kobayashi had no right to crash the competition and fight with the police. I hope the authorites throw the book at him and deport him. The US doesnt need anymore jerks from foreign countries acting up like that. He didnt want to sign a contract....he doesnt get to play. Thats the rules.

This is a problem with ALOT J-people in the US or elsewhere...they think they are subject to laws only in Japan and they think they can act up and they think local foreign cops wont care. Guess what J-people....the US and most western countries actually enforce the laws and arrest people. Kobyashi clearly was one of those J-people, who was thinking he could be a fool in the US and not suffer any consequences for his behavior. I have seen this countless times in LA. Deport him back to Japan.

No such thing as a "Japanese Imperial Flag". Thats the JMSDF flag.

No, you are wrong. Why dont you do a Google check and type in "Japanese Imperial Flag" and see what you get. Looong before it was a JMSDF flag it was an Imperial Japanese Flag and its still referred to as a Imperial Japanese Flag.

Posted in: Japan bribed small nations with cash, call girls to get whaling vote: Sunday Times See in context

If you read the original Sunday Times story, it mentions how british reporters were going around pretending to work for some billionaire conservationist at a IWC meeting and asked these small country representatives if they would be willing to sell their votes...all the while a hidden camera caught the small countries representatives comparing the "billionaires offer" to that of the Japanese. It was all caught on film...I would love to see it. The japanese outbid everyone...I guess you cant beat spending money and hookers.

Posted in: Japan bribed small nations with cash, call girls to get whaling vote: Sunday Times See in context

Not surprised. The predictions were that Japan would lose the vote...and then at the last minute it changed to Japans favor...now we know why. What a disgusting country Japan is. Im happy these African officals went on the record and blew this wide open. Its very shameful and I hope this goes against Japan when the IWC meets again. Japan is a real low balling country...and will stop at nothing to get its way.

Posted in: Hunter commits suicide after accidentally shooting friend See in context

Some of the things I see other hunters do is quite frankly shocking....basic gun safety, not to mention the law, is often neglected.

Agree...I was camping once with a group of friends at certified camp ground in Izu last year, and this hunter appears out of nowhere around noon and looks at some old deer tracks in sand next to the creek and starts shooting down stream! We were sitting 4 meters away cooking fish! If someone had been down stream they would have been shot! There were signs everywhere that said "No Hunting"!! We shouted at him to X-off...but he just glared at us and went down stream to blast trees and shadows. If there were any deer in the area, we ran them off hours before.

Very Scary.

Posted in: Hunter commits suicide after accidentally shooting friend See in context

The hunter killed himself to avoid being arrested, interrogated and forced to admit to murder. It was an accident, but the J-cops will set it up and twist the facts and label it as a murder....so the local cops can get a bonus or promotion for successful investigation of a murder. Sad...real..sad.

Posted in: Hunter commits suicide after accidentally shooting friend See in context

Another only in Japan saga. Why is suicide such an easy thing to contemplate in this country?

The hunter killed himself to avoid the stigma and shame of killing a friend. Also, the cops would have arested him and investigated him and held him for murder....and that hunter knew that. Tragic story for sure.

The cops would have definitely not have taken the "it was an accident" explanantion and would have twisted the facts to fit the cops expectations of murder...thats the j-cops way.

Posted in: Disruptive passengers force Delta Air Lines flight to return to Japan See in context

If they were Japanese guys, Delta would want them detained in Japan, so returning to Narita made sense. If they were other nationality, bringing them to U.S. would make it a terror investigation.

I agree with that. The Americans would have handled the matter as a terror investigation and those responsible would have not seen the light of a day for years to come if the plane landed in the U.S.

The Japanese protecting their own. It would have been another humiliating blow to the J-government to have J-nationals arrested, carried off the plane in hand-cuffs and treated harshly by the authorities and the media.
