Given the lack of trust between the two countries, J companies have later comers in investing in China -- VW opened its plants in mid 80's brand that secured premium brand recognition & market share in the biggest car market today. Pulling out factories could only applicable to those lower end garment / gadget manufacturing but not for higher added value items 'cause putting a plant in a country does not necessary mean granting a favor but rather to secure market share & minimizing duties ! No wonder Audi, BMW & mercedes Benz all have factories out there..

@breaking point Better off abolishing the use of Kanji ( Kan = Chinese ) like in Korean language.. If no confusions resulted ?

Don't worry, there are markets around, India for example, hardly enough roads to house new cars.. And the Middle East where countries are torn into pieces then Africa who knows ? It will take long years before China would welcome Japanese brands back ?

High-rank J-ministers kept publicizing self reassurance of the 'coverage', US lower rank officials kept delivering 'yes' -- according to how many 'yes' Japan responding to their issues : buy F-35s, deploying MV 22s, buy Boeing 787... It does not cost much for the US counterparts to repeat the same 'yes' again if Japan keeps agreeing on what they asking for.. The list is becoming longer & longer.. More importantly, their actual acts but not lip-services ?

The Ospreys are meant for U.S. Deployment program to serve the U.S. Strategy in Asia. Any objections from Japan will not be taken care of.. Agreed or not, these gadgets had been delivered to Japan before your debate !

@issa1 "Japan does not need trade partners such as China and Korea, who do not respect intellectual property. Maybe at the start the Japanese economy, will feel a little jolt, but in the long run it will be good for the world, china and korea are destroying the economy and global stability. There are so many eager partners, to receive money and Japanese technology, such as india. Forget the china, let them continue to produce to mcdonalds dolls and trinkets to wal mart."

The Japanese / US / German / French / Korean factories ( example : cars ) in China, > 12 million cars made per year, are meant to sell 99.9% of all cars on local market. One can move out all gadgetry sweatshops to other places, at the end of the day, these are market shares & profit these companies are eyeing at.

Reports by LD calls from friends who happened to be passing by the respective J embassy zone of beijing & Shanghai. Commuter transport canceled bus stops near the sensitive zone.. Large crowd of demonstrators are broken into small groups of 50 persons each time... Have to queue like the expo 2010 if you really want to demonstrate ( a few hours later ) . Except earlier days when police guard was symbolic, throwing a stone / bottle towards the embassy would imply the capacity of gold medal throwers. Hence, two events nominated for the next E.Asia Olymics -- marathon swimming ( Takeshima-Dokdo style ) & bottle throwing ( Shanghai J embassy style )..

Have to copy this article to the Noda cabinet.. Don't worry, the Chinese population is so big, the communist regime cannot control or brainwash everyone ? While there are people joining in demonstrations against Japan, others kept buying Japanese branded goods. Donot think the NK model can be workable in China today.

@Phred Smith ".... despite the fact that the japanese people pose no threat to modern day china or korea."

Not all J-people, indeed the neighbors of Japan -- Russia, the Koreas, China & now including Taiwan ( used to be close partner of Japan & the biggest donor after the 3.11 disaster -- now takes side with China against Japan ) are convinced that Japan is gradually adopting policy for the revival of militarism under the R-Wingers' initiatives.

On a beautiful early Autumn Sunday, every family in N. Asia would likely take a break in the parks & relax.. The issue must be significant enough to have mobilized many people to join in the demonstrations instead of taking a stroll in the green. Japanese media have indeed not launched full coverage of the Senkakus-Diaoyu Islands escalations, hence the public is not really understand the rationale behind the anti-J demonstrations outbreaks in China. Mishandling the issue would spark very prolonged hatred that in turn hurting the innocent people & companies caught in the crossfire. It is time for Messrs. Ishihara & Noda to defuse the crisis.

"@peanut666SEP. 14, 2012 - 08:50AM JST China's empty threat. So what? It won't affect Chinese consumers. They know the quality of Japanese goods cannot be beat. However, there's a lot of business that China can lose if Japan feels threatened. They can lose a lot of manufacturing jobs. If this happens, the people won't like it. And when the people don't like that, they might protest the Chinese government. The time for revolution in China is getting near."

In a globalized economy, J Corp is within C Corp & vice versa, both will be hurt if the escalations intensify. The party starts losing patience & feeling the urgency of taking actions first was the Noda cabinet amid almost sure loss of political support within Japan & the pressing sentiment in securing the Senkakus-Diaoyu isles before the Chinese overtakes further in economic & military power & ensuring the 50 year ( jurisprudence by ICJ with deadline in a decade ) administration of the disputed territories to enhance the chance of permanent possession of the isles.. The Chinese read very well the J Govt's intent & the drive behind the recent move..resulting in determined counter measures..

" Tom DeMickeSEP. 14, 2012 - 05:38PM JST I say "who cares about trade?". Chinese citizens have been attacking Japanese citizens in China and that is where I draw the line. Bring back all businesses back to the U.S. and Japan. I'll pay more for something."

Who cares about trade ? J Corp does & definitely -- as visible & invisible trade with C market generates huge surplus & profit during normal years.. Not to mention at a time of economic downturns. What is really important is its fast growing nature for at least decades to come. Shifting to other places sounds handy, but in practice, it is easier said than done given the very developed 'raw materials- semi finished- finished products' chain for a number of industries within China over past 30 years ( example, shifting the process 'sewing garment' out to Vietnam would mean importing clothing, dyestuffs still from China.. ). Finally, as purchasing power surging, these outposts plants located in China because they rely on the Chinese market as well.

Unlike the J surveillance fleets ( bigger sized & armed ), the Chinese surveillance vessels are not armed, slow & smaller on the average. Hence, their presence -- as thoroughly expected by the Noda cabinet as one of the very 'mild' scenarios. What one can blame the Noda game plan : no room for any options -- crashing straight ti the wall -- kamikaze style.. Chance is indeed limited of taking any advantage out of the self made crisis. Worst still, China & Taiwan are gradually pushed by Noda to form an united front on the Senkakus-Diaoyu issue.. This is a long term damage to J position in term of geopolitical balance for the decades to come. Smart move ! Smart move ?

The movie by itself was only a tiny substance igniting the time bomb -- Arab Spring logically is followed by Arab Winter ? Sad to observe that the U.S.' sole Presence in every corner of the world is gunboats..and only gunboats ! Are there people trying to understand the civilians Afgans, libyans, Egyptians, Syrians seeing the US troops passing by like a hurricane, with only civil wars, ruined cities, broken families left behind..and then.. Population left behind hopeless & helpless : if they are not yet refugees on a wrecked boat heading for Europe, Australia or members of terrorist groups, they will one day be part of it given the fact that there are no other choices to make a living. The secretary Clinton's said the US Govt has no link to the film to try to defuse the bomb -- what a naive response ? These people, qualified as terrorists or not ( by the way, they will be flattered being named so, as weapons are available everywhere after the 2011 chaos ), unless you start building fortress like embassies, these people would come back again whenever they feel expressing their grievances towards the West that destroyed their home & normal life even under dictator regimes. Finally, RIP the ambassador Stevens & his colleagues...

"Environmental and transportation officials are examining the feasibility of replacing the taxis with electric vehicles in a bid to reduce the city’s frequently heavy air pollution. The government has provided subsidies for pilot projects of electric taxi models by other carmakers including China’s BYD Co."

Dear Carlos, your initiative & effort will not work out with the brand 'Nissan' that stands for 'Nippon Production' logo's background graved with red sun. Other ideas : Renault / Samsung of the conglomerate may work..the sure-win brand should be a new brand BYD ( Back Your Diaoyu ). Think it twice, it does make sense per purely nationalistic branding gimmick !

Noda National hero !!!! National hero ? ? Remember ' 9.11' of Tokyo, president Obama is by far the biggest winner.. by opaque verbal comments -- it does not cost the U.S. to keep up the heat in stirring up hatred between the neighbors. Very smart though !

For China, donot get it wrong despite the superficial protests, their target is to build up an united front with Taiwan -- unification with Taiwan is on the top of priority list as compared to a few rocks ( they are not giving up the isles but after resolving the unification issue ) located so close to China Mainland. For Taiwan issue, they have to thank the J govt for having triggered the isles issue for speeding up the process..

Sovereignty vs butter & bread ? The best option, as China kept emphasizing, is to leave the issue as status quo like before the intensified escalation. History will teach us boundaries on world map kept changing over the centuries-- when China was weak, not only Japan, the then powers ( or even tiny nations like Portugal ) jumped on it and set up colonies, spheres of influence etc. Today, taking by force claims on the few rocks is Japan's choice to satisfy PM Noda's personal conviction / thirsts for support.. will definitely bring along serious consequences if Noda wants to set himself up as a national hero for a few weeks. He is betting big at the Tokyo Casino.

Good point indeed albeit unlikely LV or Hermes, Renault is hardly identified outside Chinese cities as a brand for cars , not to mention this is French made-- for the rest who are aware of Renault, it does not inspire prestige or reliable cars.
