Posted in: Japan's whale catch falls short as fleet heads home See in context

It's unfortunate that we'll have to miss out on some great publications featuring mindblowing science now that the ICR is short on their quota. A great loss for the scientific community .. .. ..

Before I was born I was dead for millions of years and it wasn't so bad, notwithstanding I try to keep a hard hat & survival kit at an arm's length at home and work.

As far as I know, no earthquake has ever really been predicted accurately, scientifically, up front; this whole prediction seems based on pachinko-logic to me; like putting your stack on red when playing roulette. Gotta be right some time, eh?

Honestly boring, textbook answers. Do the 296 flights per week include code-shared flights? Man I hate those! Like the JAL/AA-ones; talk about service-quality asymmetry!

I find that Delta flight attendants have attitude problems at times; but truth be told this goes for more US airlines. Their In-Flight Safety video is charming though http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgpzUo_kbFY#t=1m52s

Terrible, unnecessary incident--my feelings go out towards the victims and their family & friends. Will this ever stop?

Isn't there more to gain than to lose here, regardless of how you look at it; Japan will be the big brother anyway. It all sounds like an enticing "Please, do this for us and gain a friend?" deal to me. Their respective economic markets would respond favorably and both economies need it!

Guess it might lure some innocent(?) foreign tourists into the domestic Yoshinoya's. While I am no big fan of YN, at least you get what you pay for.

Posted in: 3.11 - WHAT WERE YOU DOING THAT DAY? See in context

In fact, I was in Tokyo working with radioactive material. Within 20 minutes after the earthquake, me and my co-workers were--ignorantly--back at work. Only to be ousted by some of the bigger aftershocks a few minutes later. It took several hours before we became aware of the tragedy unfolding up north. I had to stay at work that night and walked back the next morning (about 15 miles). The sky that day was incredibly clear and I remember seeing Fuji-san for the first time from Tokyo while crossing a river.

I am still surprised how we all foolishly went back to work without thinking strangely of it. Either way, we were lucky; nothing really happened in Tokyo besides running out of toilet paper.

Circumstances make them foul or friendly, a fact you can verify by flying an American airline and then one of the better Asian airlines.

Oh the wittiness Kabukilover, like it--much!

Glad I'm not Italian, the guy is a disgrace to the entire Italian nation. He made Kim Jong-il look like a kitten--only Bush could really compete with him.

My uncle was killed in a Japanese prison camp, in Burma--I hope that today's youth is aware of the atrocities that happened during WWII, beyond the A-bombs, as to prevent it from happening again. Ishihara/Kawamura need to take it down a notch or two.

Nicky Washida - I have read most of this thread to my husband and he has laughed till the tears run down his face

Inspired by this thread I went out to find a similar discussion were foreigners were reflecting on their annoyances with my native country. I reacted just as Nicky's husband, I spent 30 minutes laughing with tears rolling over my cheeks non-stop. The posts were spot on 99% of the time--unfortunately! :-).

Guess Ishihara consider that it was all in the name of science, so it can't be considered a massacre?

JapanGal: Have any of you posters ever considered going down to the local convenient store, buying a bunch of rice balls and handing them out?*

Don't do this, I've tried something like this once and embarrassed the person involved and in turn myself.

I agree with some of the other posters; JT is going over the top with them vs us topics. It's nice for reflection every now and then, but this just pure overkill. Cut it out!

Posted in: Japanese whalers under new attack by Sea Shepherd See in context

"Scientific whaling" in the Antarctic sea for research purposes is a loophole to internationally agreed moratoria on whaling--and a disgrace to Japanese science. If they'd just whale there straight up, without pretense, I would respect them for it! (But they wouldn't last a day!)
