Nothing wrong with cellphones at school as long as there is control by staff on their use, which seems to be lacking.

bandogeek;

Yes - it is quite amazing how well the US and Japan get along considering the enmity of the war. Kudos to both countries for making such a turnaround, despite the occasional bumps in their relationship, and notwithstanding the whingers on this site.

Posted in: Tourists to be barred from Tsukiji tuna auctions for a month See in context

the banning of tourists from Tsukiji is a symptom of that problem.

That may be true if tourists were being banned from Tsukiji, however they are not being banned from Tsukiji. They are being banned from the early morning tuna auction ONLY, a fact which seems to have slipped the notice of many though it is an important distinction. There is nothing wrong with that as it is distracting. No "racism" involved.

Simple reading comprehension seems to be beyond the abilities of many JTers, willfully or otherwise.

I've eaten it once and didn't like it either, but have no problem with whales being hunted so long as the ones being hunted are not threatened or endangered and there is an actual demand for it, which is debatable.

Yes, I believe I saw an episode of Scooby-Doo about this.

the founding fathers recognized that the only way to prevent tyranny, its citizenry should be armed.

This one always gives me a chuckle, the idea that gun-owners are upholders of liberty and could fight back against a mythical tyrannical government. Didn't work out too well at Ruby Ridge, did it? I'm sure the defenders or liberty will find solace in their semi-automatic weapons as they'll be a real big help fighting against the tyrannical government's (or UN army) JDAMs, M1 TUSKs, and Apaches.

Moderator: Readers, back on topic please.

Yep, in the long term Japan did right by keeping out an invasion of missionaries and proselytizing masses. One thing I like about Japan is the relative lack of a presence of organized religion.

There is also nothing saying that atrocities could not have been committed by future Japanese soldiers even with christianity.

Indeed - christianity didn't seem to act as much a brake on the barbarism of Nazi Germany.

Please explain how a car made by American workers (non-unionized) in the US by a Japanese company starts off with a $2,000 advantage over a similar car made by a US automaker.

pathat;

Please elaborate on these fabled mineral riches of the four islands Japan wants back. Not much there except bogs, however the waters around them may hold a lot more. Japan will eventually get them back, though I'm sure with some cash changing hands. And your undying support, I'm sure.

Yes, some sympathy for those regular Joes (cliched and incorrect as that may be) that will lose their jobs, but why should their jobs be more protected than any others, and why weren't they doing something wiser with their money and skills when times were good? Unions were good at getting them raises, but not mush more.

Statistician;

Why are you assuming that I support the bank bailout too? They should go under if they're inefficient businesses too, as should any other, or do you think that you can store money and get loans in your union-made car? Bottom line in the US and Canada is that the "Big 3" are dying and it's not the auto industry that's in decline, but rather the American auto industry. They'll go under sooner or later, less pain if they do so now. If governments want to throw money at industry, invest it in technology and innovation as they are the currencies of the future, not supporting GM, which is essentially a financing company that makes cars and can't compete with the Honda and Toyotas of the world, who also make cars in the US.

Bad idea - let them fold if that's where they're heading. Governments shouldn't be propping up these outdated smokestack industries and corrupt unions.
