Two thirds back and centre. The same position where the sound test guy sits when he's testing the sound.

Posted in: Modern etiquette - The pluses and perils of instant communication See in context

Always include a proper salutation at the beginning of an email (ie ‘Dear Mr Debrett’).

"Hi [Name]," is plenty acceptable for an email.

Beware of using capital letters too often; use italics or underlining for emphasis.

Be aware that the recipient might not necessarily see any formatting, so if you want to use emphasis you should try using asterisks around the words instead.

You're also missing the etiquette note about trimming down the email you're replying to so that they know which bits you're replying to. A lot of people get that wrong and just put their reply at the top, which is already wrong, and the #1 thing that shits me off about people using email who didn't learn how to use it before they started using it.

Ah, drugs which are already illegal stay illegal. Well, maybe they can deal with those later, if they're successful with this experiment.

Stalkers really are modern day ninja. They hide in the dark and then kill you when you least expect it.

Sounds like they're having more fun than most companies.

Naturally, using this as a selection criterium is not OK, but I would rather have fun in a company than suffer the usual drudgery.

I don't know how people could complain about this. If you don't want people's software reading your photo, why are you uploading it to a web site?

For people making lame whining about "but I have a name", that's cool. Just put the name on the same chip. Maybe you can put a pronunciation guide on there, to remove the other problem.

Just because you have one more number doesn't mean it's now your name. Don't you have a driver's licence?

Nope.

If Japanese theatres insist on using a different name for the movie, the onus should be on them to tell people what movie they're really watching.

Posted in: AMA votes to recognize obesity as a disease See in context

The old "just eat less" which people bandy about isn't exactly a working strategy. When I started correcting my diet, my dietician put me on a diet with more kilojoules than I started with, but spread them out more throughout the day and selected healthier foods than what I was previously eating.

The key isn't "eat less" at all, it's "eat better."

Problem is, the healthier foods cost more than the unhealthier foods. My wages have a bit of a buffer zone, so I can afford to do that, but there are plenty of people on low wages who have no choice but to eat the unhealthier rubbish. Eating less isn't even a choice because if you eat too little, your body stores the energy for later, which just makes you even fatter.

If the government subsidised the healthier foods or taxed the unhealthier foods, the new difference in price would work in exactly other direction. Lots of previously unhealthy people would be forced to eat healthy because unhealthy foods would cost more (I guess this means that contrarily, the richest people would return to being the fattest people in society.)

Early reviews suggest that you can either replace the lenses or remove the computer part of it and mount it on existing frames.

Posted in: All Japanese citizens to be issued ID number See in context

It might not be the best idea to go on and use this ID number as the actual ID number for other things as there are privacy concerns with doing that. Just let it replace the name so that it solves only the problem you brought it in to solve.

Posted in: Gov't considers setting clock ahead by two hours See in context

The entirety of Japan being an hour ahead of Sydney is weird. Japan is basically directly north, so the latest zone they should be using is UTC+10...

As far as computers go, people who mess around with time zones often forget that computers maintain a full history of all these changes. Even if you abolished daylight savings in every country right now, computers still have to know what the rules were in the past, otherwise past dates and times will display incorrectly. And of course if you bump Japan two hours forwards this year, computers will still have to handle it as UTC+9 for past dates. It might highlight a bunch of applications which were naïvely thinking that the time zone offset for a city is a constant thing (I know that a lot of forum software makes this mistake.)

Posted in: Microsoft touching up Windows 8 to address gripes See in context

The change which annoys me is that menus now fly out to the left of where I click the mouse.

I realise that they probably did this for tablet users who are using a pen or a finger, so the menu flying out to the right would usually be covered by your hand. But it does this even on computers which don't have any touch devices and it isn't even consistent between all applications on the computer. So I've completely lost the ability to predict where a menu will be when right-clicking now.

Posted in: Google Plus racks up followers, but not all are devoted See in context

My history of Google+:

I was one of the idiots clamouring for the service in the early days and happily used it alongside Twitter for about a week.

A week in, I noticed that nobody else was actually posting things on there, just copying the things they had already posted on Twitter anyway.

A few more weeks in, Google banned my account because they didn't think my name looked like a "real name", whatever that is. Presumably they kicked off a large number of authors and actors at around the same time, leaving the site devoid of anyone who was actually interesting to follow.

So I happily lived without it for 2 years.

About a month ago, I was just visiting YouTube to watch some videos, when suddenly, Google pop up a dialog saying "hey man, I notice you're using your real name on Google and your alias on YouTube - do you want to: (1) use your real name on both, or (2) use your alias on both?" I chose (2) and as a side-effect, they created yet another Google+ account for me.

So essentially, just because Google+ had an increase in users doesn't mean people are joining the service voluntarily. A lot of us were forced there by a misleading dialog box on YouTube. This also makes it very easy to explain why it looks like people aren't posting there much. It's because we don't f***ing care.
