Posted in: Woman arrested for abandoning 12 dogs in house See in context
Three dogs safely rescued. Have been neutered and one has been adopted, other two have prospective owners. Many cases like this but at least the police decided to prosecute this irresponsible owner for animal abuse. That is a major step forward.

and if they can't find the owner ? Already too late , most have already died of dehydration or starvation. Still alive cattle let out to forage will most likely die of bloat.

Horii zoo is a hell hole; lamas and penguins on the roof, tiger in a space unable to turn and a chimpanzee in a dark barren cage going nuts. Hope the kangaroo gets away and finds a kinder home.

Posted in: Over 70 dogs perish in Nara pet shop fire See in context
Actually fires in pet shops and breeding establishments (puppy mills) are quite common; partly we might guess for insurance but also as a means to get rid of the old stock in one swoop and then start all over again. Accurate data on killed numbers of dogs and cats in Japanese 'kanri ' centres can be found on the ALIVE (All Life in a Viable Environment) website.

Glad to see the royals setting an example by adopting a mix-breed dog rather than a 'flavour of the month' , one month old puppy from a pet shop. Puppies in pet shops are bred in puppy mills, have no natural immunity, are removed from their mothers far too young, are not socialized and are sold with forged pedigrees at exorbitant prices to basically stupid people.
