Strangerland needs a hobby??? I am sure he has several hobbies, one being the ability to articulate his posting quite well with a basis of truth and not wild (ass)umptions.... Here-say is NOT evidence without collaborating evidence, especially when it comes from the mouth of a drunken suspect.

WOW Strangerland..... Why are people giving you so many "thumbs down" when all you asked was "Show me the proof" that indicates "crime is increasing"? AND... as it turns out... you are quite correct in questioning as every survey I have found so far, does in fact indicate violent crime is on a downward trend in Japan. If people think Japan is not safe... perhaps they should visit Chicago, Detroit or Milwaukee and get a new perspective on "What's Not Safe". ;)

I find it amazing, that there is "a" reported "violent" crime and there is always someone who wants to say "oh, crime stats are rising!" without showing any proof of evidence that it is true. Are you isolating yourself from "Global" news as most likely more people were violently killed and injured in one week or two in one US city, pick one...Chicago, Detroit, Milwaukee then a year in whole country of Japan.

I find it simply amazing how people always seem to come to the conclusion that "Japan" is not as safe as most people would like to think it is. I read on the average, everyday, 2 or 3 people are murdered/injured by another in Japan. In just the time it takes to read this article, at least 2 people were probably killed by the hand of another person in Chicago, Illinois alone, not to mention how many are killed in the other 49 states.

I find common courtesy on public transportation has become a bit lacking over the years. I am an elderly person but still in fairly good shape. I always give up my seat to adult females and small children. I find it appalling when a young man will be sitting down and an elderly woman will be having to stand right beside him and he'll pretend he doesn't see her. Also, remember back when it was quite quiet when riding public transportation? With the popularity of cell phones, it has become quite noisy. Is your conversation THAT important that it couldn't wait? My God, how did you possibally survive before the advent of the cell phone?

WHY, do some assume the worst about people?? Perhaps Mom was a nurse at a hospital and walking her daughter from a caretakers house. Just one reason of thousands but some want to accuse "Mom" of using poor judgement.

Posted in: 16-year-old boy falls to death at Yokohama shopping center See in context

Irregardless if he shoplifted or not, to chase a person 300 meters in a shopping mall which being at 12 noon on a Saturday is ludicrous. 1, he was only suspected of shopliftin, and 2, at that time of day, the mall was probably a bit crowded. Not only did they obviously put this young man's life in jeopardy but others as well. For what? A couple $100 at the most? Which most stores are insured for. Once he got a 100 feet or so from the store they should of stopped, especially when they only thought he shoplifted. And why did he run? Who knows for sure... He had 2 men chasing him who may or may not have identified themselves or gave a reason for chasing him. There are many reasons but to assume he is guilty just because he ran is not justification fir his death.

I certainly hope they find this young girl. Thirty meters is less then a 100 feet... I let my daughter separate from us a bit just to build her confidence up but, you can be sure I keep a very watchful eye on her. but, in a small rural town and the fact she was 7.... Most Japanese children, by age 7 are walking farther then that on their own when they go to school. That being said, it doesn't take much for a child to avert their attention from the initial plan and be sidetracked by a bird or butterfly.

I don't understand this.... He was convicted of dumping a body into the water... But the evidence couldn't prove that he killed her? Unless he pulled the body out of the water, then threw her back in the same water, the fact that the evidence points to drowning, how is this person NOT guilty???

For Your Information... Kumamoto Castle (熊本城 Kumamoto-jō) is a hilltop Japanese castle located in Chūō-ku, Kumamoto in Kumamoto Prefecture. It was a large and extremely well fortified castle. The castle keep (天守閣 tenshukaku) is a concrete reconstruction built in 1960, but several ancillary wooden buildings remain of the original castle. Kumamoto Castle is considered one of the three premier castles in Japan, along with Himeji Castle and Matsumoto Castle. Thirteen structures in the castle complex are designated Important Cultural Property...

I agree with "Strangerland"... They do go fairly well together... sort of like the Chex Trail Mix, "Sweet & Salty". But mayo on fries is the best though not very healthy. The English method isn't bad either... a little vinegar sprinkled on them. I wonder, if the people who think fries and chocolate syrup is disgusting, think the same about chocolate covered pretzels?

"He was stopped and asked to get out of the car. The passport was in the car..." If you read MORE closely... "He passed a roadside breath test but was detained after he could not find his passport — an alleged violation of immigration laws requiring foreigners to carry passports or other acceptable identification." Particularly where it says "HE COULD NOT FIND HIS PASSPORT"..... Also "Leaving Japan would be heartbreaking, O’Barry said, but efforts to stop the hunt would not stop." So he pretty much convicted himself about lying about reason for entry.

"The missing passport was later found in O'Barry's car, his son said." After the fact...a statement of "he said, she said" variety.

Leads me to believe the "A Political Prisoner" statement is a bit misleading... He, himself caused his arrest. Lincoln O'Barry, who manages the organization's public relations and spoke to his father by phone Tuesday morning, said the tip may have come from a local reporter who saw him at dinner. "It was set up by paparazzi," the son said.

Police received a tip he may of been drunk. Set up by the paparazzi??? REALLY??? Does he honestly believe he is that freaking famous or important?? He did NOT have his passport readily available to show the authorities which every VISITOR to Japan knows they must have readily available. I am quite sure he was on a "watch" list for his previous infractions to Japanese Law. By his own admission from jail, he states ulterior motive for being in Japan other then "Site Seeing". And look at all the free publicity this no account is getting. Hopefully, any law suit that he brings against Japan will be quickly dismissed..but knowing the United States... their court system ignores most of the constitutional law anyways so they probably will attempt to try the case for more notoriety. AND YES, I am an American, residing in Japan, and no matter how screwed up I may or may not think Japanese laws are, I am going to respect their laws as I respect their beliefs and customs. Seems funny how many negative comments I see posted "about Japan" from foreigners working in Japan. Quick to take their money and to criticize.

To clarify the one trying to clarify the writer(who was correct in what he wrote...)

"Bathing" is the washing of the body with a fluid, usually water or an aqueous solution, OR the immersion of the body in water. It may be practised for personal hygiene, religious ritual or therapeutic purposes.

"so much for Japan having low crime. each day there is something going on"... Really??? 4 or 5 "crime' news items get reported in JAPANTODAY for the whole of Japan. Perhaps you should read ANY USA city newspaper and you will see numerous crime reports just for that city! Japan is still a lot safer then a majority of other countries.

If it wasn't for the publicity/notoriety AND especially the very enormous donations they receive to support their extravagant lifestyles and fleets, none of this would be taking place and to think otherwise is quite naive. Just ask yourself, why would you spend $2,000,000 on a small boat(the Ady Gil) that can do 50 knots and the Gojira that cost $5,000,000 that is even faster, to catch Whaling boats that don't even do close to that speed? No, because they look neat on their TV show!

@Alex80... Apparently you don't know the procedures of firefighting a fire. Firefighters like to know whats in a building before they starting pouring water into it. Many metals (i.e. magnesium) and chemicals (many sulfates) react violently to water. Also not knowing what is in the building, they wouldn't know what hazards are draining out of the building with the water or if the electrical power had been secured. This is the job of the on scene commander who in this case was probably on the American fire fighting team. That is why it is very important to have MSDS forms filed!

Posted in: Japan's Hiroshima ceremonies 'scheming': Chinese media See in context

If Japan asked forgiveness over and over for the atrocities they committed in WWII, it's my opinion that China would complain they(Japan) were asking way too much. No matter what Japan does, China will find something to naw on, like an old dog worrying a bone half to death. What China doesn't understand is, the Hiroshima bombing is memorialized for the Japanese children, women and men killed there, a civil memorial more so then a "government" memorial. One other fact I find amazing, is the number of foreigners who are in Japan, want to criticize Japan for past atrocities but are happy to have a Job as a guest in Japan and happily take their money.
