Posted in: How to avoid being a 'third-rate patient' See in context

True story: I have a female Canadian friend who went to the doctor to discuss a female-related problem. The doctor (female btw) who had had lived in the USA said, "So, I hear you have a problem with your kunt". Same friend went to a different doctor and on the examination table the doctor said "oooh fish and chips!".

I agree with 5Speedracer5 that the value of a lecture is worth zero, especially with regard to learning English. Set the rules at the beginning: no phones, no Japanese and no-one speaking while someone else is speaking. Of course uni-imposed rules have more weight (e.g. 5 times absence and you fail), but if you explain this to students without patronising them, while expressing a genuine desire to improve their skills, then, in my experience you and the students will have a smooth semester.

This reminds me of Roger's PROFANISAURUS REX entry: quumf v. To sit in waiting outside a public library and take the opportunity to sniff ladies' bicycle seats as soon as possible after their owner has dismounted and gone inside.

I too have witnessed Japanese men entering the bath with just a splash from the bucket 90% of the time i go the gym. I have lived here for 15 years. I think it depends on the kind of onsen or sent you go to.

Posted in: If you're low-income, here's what you're doing wrong See in context

Stupid article. Not to mention the fact that just being invited to a wedding costs you minimum 30,000 yen. If you are on a low income, that's a lot of cash to part with...

Posted in: Is Japan really racist? See in context

I make eye-contact and get nods of recognition and smiles every day on my way to work. A few glares and mutterings too. "Is Japan really racist?" The question itself feels a bit racist to me….

A client of mine takes me to Beaujolais Night at a fancy hotel every year. It's not new(s).

I thought it was strange that the police asked her to "bring the threatening emails back the next day so they could prepare to file a charge against him". Couldn't she just have sent them?! Poor girl.

Maybe he remembers everything and is just pretending he doesn't, hoping the authorities will be lenient! Was he also injured?
