Yeah if the state hands out a massive pension to everybody then some people get lazy.

Why bother saving and living within your means if everything is handed to you on plate when you retire?

It's best to have a lower state pension... then you have to live sensibly, save money and top it up as best you can to achieve the retired lifestyle that you want.

IMHO, part of a great dining experience is not only the food but also the decor of the restaurant, the atmosphere of the restaurant and the attitude of the staff.

If I spend a lot of money, I want the whole package.

From what I can see, Sukiyabashi Jiro's decor makes it look like someone's front room. Nondescript sounds too kind for this restaurant.

I have also read that the atmosphere there is terrible. You have to eat in almost total silence, with what seems to be a time limit imposed for each piece of sushi!

Furthermore, it seems that the staff can be rude and arrogant at times.

I do find that the concept of "omotenashi" that the Japanese are always pushing seems to be far from the truth.

As an example, I took two friends from abroad to another sushi shop in Tokyo recently. It wasn't cheap. During our meal, the two chefs nearest us chatted frequently (in Japanese) and were snickering about their jokes. I am not saying they were laughing at us (I speak Japanese pretty well), but it created an unwelcoming atmosphere and seemed very unprofessional. Also, one of them was constantly sniffing and making other associated noises which I frankly thought was disgusting and enough to put me off my meal.

I think all the talk about using natural materials is almost a con trick, especially in regards to the roof.

The lattice supporting the roof, as far as I understand, is actually steel clad in wood... which seems almost ridiculous.

Surely the wood is purely cosmetic... in fact unnecessary.

It's a standard steel stadium roof, pretending to be shrine roof or something like that.

Also, a big thing is being made about this "cosmetic wood" in the roof being sourced in Japan.

However, it has been pointed out that the vast majority of the huge amount of plywood used for laying concrete in the building was sourced from rainforests!!

Outrageous.

I didn't say that it is or isn't against the law.

But I'm pretty sure that the Japanese public are forbidden from waving the rising sun flag (kyoku-jitsu-ki) at the emperor.

This is enforced in various ways.

For example, at events where the emperor appears, the only flag you are allowed to wave is one handed out by event staff. Of course, these are all hinomaru flags.

It's a subtle but effective method of enforcement.

If somebody bought a "my flag" in the form of a rising sun flag and tried to wave it, I am sure the police would surround that person and prevent it.

Have a look at online videos of the recent royal enthronement parade. I couldn't see a single rising sun flag.

Ask a Japanese friend about this... they will likely say "of course we are allowed"... but actually they have no idea what is allowed or not.

In fact, they've never noticed this or even thought about it.

So it's very funny...
