Lots of "predictions" here from the hard-left posters.

I wonder if they will be as accurate as their predictions for last week's election.

Don't forget, they all backed the losing horse last week... or should we say, the old red nag Corbo.

Let's take their "predictions" with a huge pinch of salt.

I just say thank goodness the ridiculous Comrade Corbyn with his student union manifesto has been roundly defeated.

He was a complete joker and the hard-left posters who supported him on here must be regretting that Labour had such an idiotic leader.

Labour is now in a terrible position and will continue that way for a long time.

Well done Red Corby.

Balsam Hill has some nice super-realistic artificial trees.

Unfortunately they don't deliver to Japan.

Well done Boris.

Corbyn was a disaster and his anti-semitic party has been rejected.

Also, the anti-semitism of some of the posters on this website has been revealed.

It won't be forgotten.

@fxgai

Yeah if the state hands out a massive pension to everybody then some people get lazy.

Why bother saving and living within your means if everything is handed to you on plate when you retire?

It's best to have a lower state pension... then you have to live sensibly, save money and top it up as best you can to achieve the retired lifestyle that you want.

That encourages personal responsibility.

Poor old Labour.

Desperately unpopular in the UK.

Look at the Laborites above... bleating about newspaper influence etc.

That's basically calling everybody thick.

What they are saying is "Oh I can see through the newspaper bias because I'm oh-so-clever but all the thickos have just fallen for it."

They call themselves socialist but they're the worst snobs out there.

Good riddance to the anti-semite Corbyn... what a joker... good for a laugh at least.

Who will be the next Labour leader... Diane Abbot??!! She'd be excellent!

You think the reason that the ONLY flags allowed at events with the imperial family are hinomaru flags is... security.

It's cute that you believe that.

可愛い。

Whatever, the result is the same...

You Japanese citizens are not allowed to wave the rising sun flag at your own emperor.

But you want the "right" to wave it at foreign sports teams...

" You cannot bring in any flags... It’s all for security reasons

Don't you understand?

You can't bring your own flag...

You can only fly the flags we hand out...

All those flags are hinomaru...

There will be no rising sun flags...

I mean, maybe interpreting information is not your strong point but please think about it.

@thepersoniamnow (maybe you are also ganbareJapan)

It's funny.

You think you can wave the rising sun flag at the emperor?

I'd like to see you try.

In fact, why don't you try it?

You could attend the 新年一般参賀... it's coming soon.

Just show up with a rising sun flag and try waving it.

Go for it!

I'd like to see what happens.

You see, the simple fact is, the Japanese public are not allowed to wave the rising sun flag at their own emperor.

They have no complaints about that.

But they are demanding the "right" to wave it at foreign sports teams.

How strange.

It is perfectly legal and OK to wave the... "Rising Sun flag"

Please answer my question.

Why aren't the Japanese public allowed to wave the rising sun flag at their own emperor?

Japans right to wave ANY official flag they choose.

Japanese people are funny.

They think they have "rights" about what flag they can wave.

In fact, they are not allowed to wave the rising sun flag at their own emperor!!

Did you see the recent parade with the imperial couple? Not a single rising sun flag.

I just wonder why the Japanese public are not permitted to wave the rising sun flag at the emperor.

I'd love to hear some possible reasons.

Also, if they don't wave the rising flag at their own emperor, why do they think it is OK to wave it at foreign sports teams?

The funny thing is that Japanese public will never wave the rising sun flag at their own emperor!

In fact, it seems certain that the Japanese are not allowed to wave the rising sun flag at their emperor.

We get some Japanese posters here saying "nobody can tell us what flag to wave"... they seem to have no idea that they are prohibited from waving the rising sun flag at the emperor.

Posted in: Famed Tokyo sushi restaurant Jiro dropped from Michelin gourmet guide See in context

IMHO, part of a great dining experience is not only the food but also the decor of the restaurant, the atmosphere of the restaurant and the attitude of the staff.

If I spend a lot of money, I want the whole package.

From what I can see, Sukiyabashi Jiro's decor makes it look like someone's front room. Nondescript sounds too kind for this restaurant.

I have also read that the atmosphere there is terrible. You have to eat in almost total silence, with what seems to be a time limit imposed for each piece of sushi!

Furthermore, it seems that the staff can be rude and arrogant at times.

I do find that the concept of "omotenashi" that the Japanese are always pushing seems to be far from the truth.

As an example, I took two friends from abroad to another sushi shop in Tokyo recently. It wasn't cheap. During our meal, the two chefs nearest us chatted frequently (in Japanese) and were snickering about their jokes. I am not saying they were laughing at us (I speak Japanese pretty well), but it created an unwelcoming atmosphere and seemed very unprofessional. Also, one of them was constantly sniffing and making other associated noises which I frankly thought was disgusting and enough to put me off my meal.

zichi: Part of this comes directly from Israel.

It’s sad to see a comment like this on JT.

Yes, I thought it was sad too and close to being antisemitic.

And what about Corbyn's deliberate use of the pronunciation "Epsh-tine" in the debate to emphasize the pedophile's Jewishness.

Evidently signalling to antisemitic supporters in his party.

Corbyn is a disgrace and I sincerely hope his antisemitic party gets trounced at the election.

Posted in: Construction of stadium for 2020 Tokyo Olympics completed at cost of ¥157 bil See in context

I think all the talk about using natural materials is almost a con trick, especially in regards to the roof.

The lattice supporting the roof, as far as I understand, is actually steel clad in wood... which seems almost ridiculous.

Surely the wood is purely cosmetic... in fact unnecessary.

It's a standard steel stadium roof, pretending to be shrine roof or something like that.

Also, a big thing is being made about this "cosmetic wood" in the roof being sourced in Japan.

However, it has been pointed out that the vast majority of the huge amount of plywood used for laying concrete in the building was sourced from rainforests!!

Outrageous.

Posted in: Do you find Japan's rising sun flag offensive? See in context

@NCIS

Please read people's posts carefully.

I didn't say that it is or isn't against the law.

But I'm pretty sure that the Japanese public are forbidden from waving the rising sun flag (kyoku-jitsu-ki) at the emperor.

This is enforced in various ways.

For example, at events where the emperor appears, the only flag you are allowed to wave is one handed out by event staff. Of course, these are all hinomaru flags.

It's a subtle but effective method of enforcement.

If somebody bought a "my flag" in the form of a rising sun flag and tried to wave it, I am sure the police would surround that person and prevent it.

Have a look at online videos of the recent royal enthronement parade. I couldn't see a single rising sun flag.

Ask a Japanese friend about this... they will likely say "of course we are allowed"... but actually they have no idea what is allowed or not.

In fact, they've never noticed this or even thought about it.

So it's very funny...

As I mentioned, we have comments above from Japanese people saying things like "nobody can tell us what flag to wave" but yet they are NOT ALLOWED to wave the rising sun flag at their own emperor!!

An interesting point is that the Japanese public NEVER wave the rising sun flag (kyoku-jitsu-ki) at their own emperor!

In fact I think it is forbidden for Japanese people to wave the rising flag at the emperor.

Look at the recent parade for the emperor's enthronement. Not a single rising sun flag being waved by the general public!!

Why is this?

I think the emperor (a very good person IMHO) does not want to be associated with this symbol of Japan's militaristic past.

So it's kind of funny...

... we have comments above from Japanese people saying things like "nobody can tell us what flag to wave" but yet they are NOT ALLOWED to wave the rising sun flag at their own emperor!!

This story seems to have omitted a lot of interesting details.

Some Japanese apparently believe that Amaterasu Omikami is present in the room with the emperor!

And somehow the ritual establishes a conjugation between the emperor and the Goddess.

The mind boggles!!

Why don't the Japanese wave the rising sun flag at the emperor?

Is it banned to do that in Japan?

What would happen if during the enthronement parade (for example) a Japanese citizen tried to wave the rising sun flag at the emperor?

Would police officers stop that person?

I'm really curious about this.

One thing I've noticed in Japan is that the Japanese public will never wave the rising sun flag at the emperor... only the hinomaru flag.

Is there a reason for this?

Is it banned in Japan for the public to wave the rising sun flag at the emperor?

Could somebody please explain this?

Why is he choosing to bash America and the UK in this article?

Why is he focusing on Trump for his "contemporary parallels"?

Why didn't he use this game to make critical comentary about Abe, the Japanese government or Japanese society.

I find that many Japanese people are uncomfortable or maybe scared of making any kind of criticism of Japan.

I think if he had chosen to make a statement about what is wrong with Japan in this game then it would be more interesting.

Rather than ban drinking, Shibuya should ban people who don't wear costumes.

I sometimes hear them barking out orders (in terrible broken English) or else giving the crossed-arms batsu or something.

It's rude and makes them look silly.
