Posted in: Pirate hostage captain praises SEAL 'superheroes' See in context

no den den, they shouldn't face any courts. the pirates, although young, went out onto the ocean, took hostages, stole, and threatened death to anyone who resisted. i'm not sure what bubble you live in, but here in the real world, we have choices we make, and those choices have consequences. they chose to steal and threaten harm, so they pay the consequences, even if that payment is with their lives. i don't feel bad for them.

Posted in: When should Alzheimer's patients stop driving? See in context

it should be as soon as they are showing symptoms of the disease. yes, taking something like this away can have a bad effect, but is it any worse of an effect than someone who forgets which way to go on the expressway and get in a head on crash and kills someone? worse than that? no, it isn't. hurt feelings are easier to get over than death.

yes, it is an issue, although i'm sure the mods will say it isn't. it may not be the all encompassing issue some say it is, but it has often had a big effect.

Moderator: No, it is not a racial issue. Please focus your comments on what is in the story.

i am an american and i thought that "freedom tower" was a ridiculous, half-baked, silly sounding name. one world trade center sounds a lot better.

Posted in: Man held for punching 50-yr-old woman on Saitama train over playing games on cell phone See in context

i still don't get the uproar over using a cell phone on the train. i mean, if you are talking in a normal conversational tone, why bother with it? why not go after something that actually impacts others, like drunk, un hygenic, half asleep salarymen? i'd rather hear someone's convo than be in the same car as some of these "men" who refuse to acknowledge the existence of soap...

hockey players do it, basketball players do it, baseball players do it, and that's in america, hard as that is to believe. god, now i have to hear about the brave "samurai japan" team for the next 3 years. i like japan, but i hope they lose their title next time.

although they did play well, how did they do in the olympics? just curious.

down here in okinawa restaurants very often try to tell you that you CAN'T take home something if you couldn't finish it due to "food safety" issues. all it takes is reminding them that you did in fact pay for the food, not to mention the "horrible things will happen to you if you don't wrap that up for me to take home" face that I give them if they try to tell me no. hey, I paid, and if I don't or can't eat it all at once, tough for them.

Posted in: Japanese cooking shows and the loss of sanity See in context

read the article sonnoujoui. he isn't complaining about J-tv or J-food in general. he is complaining about the absolutely ridiculous tv shows that have some no talent hack eating at some restaurant/bar/grill/house and, if it's a woman, very, very loudly and ear piercingly exclaiming OISHIIIII!!! that is ridiculous. all they need to do is say it tastes great, and describe it. the only reason that it seems the women do that is because the media tells them that it's attractive/cute to speak like they are a 6 year old girl.

romulus3 and boboh,

i've been reading both of your comments. i see what both of you are saying. it seems to me that romulus is saying that because of her choosing him, and her being out, she is partly responsible for what happened. mind you, that seems to me to be a far different thing than saying it's her fault that it happened. i believe that her decisions up to this point have led up to this horrible act.

although she may have indirectly led to the event, he, and he alone is at fault for the act itself. i hope karma catches up with him, and she makes better choices. but we all know how life goes, and there's a good chance she won't learn.

Posted in: Visa publishes expats guide to living in Japan See in context

i've only very rarely had trouble using my foreign visa while i was in mainland japan or in okinawa. i did have a gas station attendant tell me my card wouldn't work at the gas station because it wasn't issued in japan. then i asked him to try it, then I told him to try it and magically, it worked.

888naff, what are you talking about with cash society of japan and not borrowing money and getting into personal debt? with the amount of very new cars on the road and the very low popularity of buying a used car, i'd say that you are just getting the impression that people aren't getting into personal debt. i live next to one of those eifuru (sp?) easy loan places where all you need is a driver's license to get a substantial loan that is instantly approved at a stupid percentage rate, and that place gets an insane amount of business.

Births have been known to occur in the ambulance while the crew frantically searches for a hospital able to accommodate the emergency.

does this strike anyone else as ridiculous? hospital - emergency. if you can't handle an emergency birth, you have no right being called a hospital or even being open. you are worthless.

presto, if the cops are there every moment that you are in public, then people, possibly even people like you, will, not might, but will complain about living in a facist state where the police are everywhere and constatntly looking over your shoulder. you can't have it both ways. won't ever happen as long as people remain human.

how is pointing out that the japanese nuclear power plants have had scandal after scandal after accident within the past ten years or so and the us navy's ships haven't had any being un-diplomatic? what past cover ups do you speak of? oh yeah, you don't have any because they've been "covered up", right?

The Nuclear Power Plant is the LEAST of your worries..what about the Nuclear Bombs and Missles on board?...Oooops I forgot this is a secret..

why don't the japanese start worrying about their own screwed up nuclear power stations in the vicintiy of tokyo, or wherever they are before they start worrying about a navy who's never had a nuclear accident with one of their ships? haven't the japanese been releasing heavy water in the the environment along with radioactive steam, and pulling shennanigans like allowing underage temp workers to run inspections on their power plants?
