Any other country it would be Four People Arrested for Copper Wire Theft. In Japan, we have to know that it’s the foreign devil!

Citizens of any country want to know criminals are foreign no matter what country it is.

Pretty important information.

No, unless there is a specific reason in most counties, it is not considered necessary at all to divulge the nationality of the crime suspects. It causes more harm than good to society .

Tell me why you need to know the geographical and ethnic origin of the suspects in this case.

Agreed.

Japan is still learning about the power of the media to create disharmony in relations with non-Japanese and Japanese people.

How does the gender of the captain come into it?

"She said she was appalled to see the comments online from "armchair admirals, people who will never have to make decisions which mean life or death for their subordinates."

There is no doubt the military is doing DEI hires and so people do automatically assume so when they see a female captain. Was she a capable captain with experience? If not, yes she was a DEI hire.

We also shouldn't forget that sometimes you can hire a male captain like the Italian captain Francesco Schettino or Lee Joon-seok who sunk the ferry in Korea.

lol

No such thing as a DEI hire in NZ as it has one of the highest levels of equality in the world.

And what percentage in eastern Asia

My bad, this should read, "And what percentage in Japan?"

This will not sit well with Japanophiles (and I consider myself one of them), but it is sadly likely higher in Japan (and similar cultures) since speaking up is much more difficult, almost impossible, compared to most other developed countries.

Sexual assault (chikan) is particularly high in Japan, so it's not a stretch to draw conclusions from that.
