You can access your family register which contains very private information and is connected to local government, pay bills and do a variety of useful administrative things at 7/11. I feel it is more secure in local hands.

Rice is the staple food of Japan and it is necessary to protect Japanese farmers so that they can keep growing rice. Japan's food self-sufficiency is only 37% and if there is a world war or similar disaster they will not have enough food to feed their population if all the farmers have stopped producing due to cheaper prices elsewhere.
