Have the fondest memories of tearing around on these - ! I would just get off the train at different random stations all the time knowing that a Docomo port was never far away !

@timeon And Tsitsipas, who became arguably the most hated player on tour after his toilet break antics, was sensationally beaten by Alcatraz, the 18 year old new star from Spain. Just saw the 5th set, unbelievable fight

It was a good win by the young Spain jin but to be honest your comment above is way off the mark. People do not understand. That is people like you simply do not understand. He did nothing wrong even his previous opponent admitted that. He did nothing outside the rules. If anything it is the RULE itself that is wrong as it does not stipulate a time limit. Only a "suitable " time for. bathroom breaks and so on and so forth. May as well add I am writing this via iphone from the toilet taking a slightly longer than average / usual you know what.

Posted in: Hokkaido ski resort tackles growing tension between Japanese, foreign residents See in context

Japanese for the most part just want to be segregated from foreigners and do things "their" way. It is just so deeply ingrained in the culture its not even funny. I remember the first week I arrived in 2002 a kid asked me how I got to Japan (made swimming stroke gesture) and he was dead serious. I worked many seasons on a ski resort in Hyogo prefecture teaching skiing to JHS and HS students in mid - late nineties before moving there in 2002. During dinner time / lunch and breakfast for that matter there was always a Japanese table and NZ table which at that time seemed incredibly strange to me before I became much more familiar with the culture.

You often get asked "'when did you come to Japan" "Why did you come to Japan" and invariably "when are you leaving" and it becomes a depressing place to live when you understand just how deeply this is rooted.

Probably a lot of animosity is jealously due to ease of making money in places like Niseko for foreigners. Remember that in Japan you are basically expected to belong to a company unless you are a famous sushi chef or artist/musician of some kind are two exceptions that come to mind. They see the Kiwis and Aussies come in buy a block of their land on sell it for profit within a year and they are just wondering how the hell they can find buyers when in Japan real estate is simply considered a terrible investment. In my opinion it is akin to an "invasion" of sorts and this is indeed how many Japanese refer to this kind of scenario. So there is friction regardless of whether you throw an old ski boot in the burnables or unburnables. Shame, it is what it is.

Posted in: Japan’s environment ministry has set aside about $18.6 million (¥2 billion) in its fiscal 2019 budget for a public-private consortium that will develop proposals and bid on waste management deals in Southeast Asian nations, most of which face serious pollution challenges. The goal is to win contracts for Japanese companies and some goodwill. See in context

Use transferwise, cheaper and you transfer the money to a local account first so no questions. Once I uploaded my ID I did 1 million yen transfer, no questions, done and in the overseas account 2 days later.

Agree absolutely transferwise are great - Avoid XE Money Transfers they will LOSE your money !

The worst thing is the people on the quite zesty docomo cycle share bikes. They are on footpaths in your neighbourhood mostly piloted by reckless gaijin and salarymen who are often off chops having missed the last train.

Posted in: Half of foreigners in Tokyo have experienced discrimination: survey See in context

I once bought a pair of ski googles from Rondon Sports in Kanda. When I got home and excitedly tried on I noticed the sticker said "asian fit" on the frame. Anyway I took them back a few days later and gave the staff a decent spray for selling them to me in the first place. Sadly they thought this was a great joke and started muttering and chuckling incomprehensively to each other. I have not set foot in that store since and really hope it is not still operating to be honest.

I was also told by an ex g/f many years ago that Japanese guys were a better "fit" for her and it was one of a few reasons for her breaking up with me.

A third example I remember was mistakenly pulling out some Australian banknotes from my wallet to pay at a hostess bar and one of the local patrons noticed me doing so and said "what is that note or is it a napkin ?" to much amusement of his colleagues. I must admit though that I was quite impressed with his wit which is unusual for Japanese.

So yes I strongly believe this kind of predjudice rears its ugly head in many shapes and forms.

Posted in: ‘Jisa Biz’ campaign to ease overcrowding on Tokyo trains starts Monday See in context

May as well contribute-

I agree in the evenings I would ride yamamoto daily from Kanda to Meguro - train was never busy after 7.00pm in that direction - not all trains are like that picture.

I think Solution to this is CYLCLES - even MARIO Carts since they are road legal as well

The last company I worked I would cycle even in summer and I remember shachos look when he saw me from time to time - his face just said we PAY you take the train - therein lies the problem imhao

cycles are everywhere with convenient parking at the stations themselves and distance between stations is hardly far - the issue is Japanese people think cycling especially to the office is "dangerous" - thoughts ?

To me this kind of sums up the country. Everything is open to interpretation but common sense tells us why even have a policy if the outcome every year is 3 accepts per 8k or 10k or whatever the number maybe. Hard line stance - hard to figure out what they do or don't want !
