IMHO I also believe that gossip rags should be licensed, and their papers to have disclaimers which state clearly, "This is a rumor which we are gossipping about".

Gossip-mongers should be taxed harshly

Only truth should remain free, and unpublished.

i still feel they should give monthly relationship counselling to couples, regardless of whether they can be fine without.

there is still need for an objective third party, who is regulated by government to be impartial and not take sides.

IMHO in addition to social workers, Buddhist priests could perform this function and get a supplement from the government.

yukiko and her mother... when will japanese women get the guts to seek positive friends who can handle depression gracefully?

this murder-suicide is in essence manufactured by japanese society.

tho technologically advanced, japan needs to bring its emotional life into the modern era.

there is no shame in seeking counselling. caring for the elderly SHOULD be a community effort.

and it is as easy as just listening to your elders.

for youth is fleeting, and old age natural.

Posted in: Japan going to pot: Celebrity busts and student smokers have authorities in a tizz See in context

Overall, this article is part of a nation-wide disinformation campaign against marijuana. Nothing in it is true, and the anecdotes are skewed in such a way as to demonize marijuana.

Posted in: Japan going to pot: Celebrity busts and student smokers have authorities in a tizz See in context

the following from the article:

The apparent spike in marijuana usage has sparked a wave of warnings about the apocalyptic threat the drug poses to society. An email sent to Waseda students thundered that marijuana smokers “all too often end up physically and mentally ruined, perhaps leading lives of crime.”

This is a fallacy. Saké poses more of a threat to society than pot.

Moderator: This story is about pot, not sake or any other alcohol. Stay on topic please.

that's a false belief. rather, alcohol is more of a gateway drug.

and more prescription drugs kill people that does pot.

Posted in: Man arrested for allegedly killing schizophrenic brother at his request See in context

IMHO the brother voluntarily admitted himself to the psych hospital, since he had to pay for his medication. As well, he certainly wasn't educated about his disease, probably due to shame.

His inappropriate behavior possibly led to a form of shunning by his immediate community.

So IMHO he was originally hikikomori, and in a depressive fugue asked his brother to kill him.

You'd think that'd be a call for his brother to involuntarily commit him, but both being poor, he couldn't accept the resposibility.

This suggests that NHI isn't high enough to subsidize care, and that the lack of community involvement with psychiatric hospitals means that patients with a limited social network would not get the care afforded to patients with a large social network.

It looks to me like the poor, being considered an embarrassment to the local community, are still not getting adequate care in Japan.

this article needs study, and application, but unfortunately, few Japanese doctor will apply it because a US female psychiatric doctor wrote it.

Posted in: Suspect's wife apologizes over N Carolina nursing home shooting See in context

This story is similar to the 23 yr-old Haitian man's killing of his 17 yr-old and decapitation of his 5 yr-old sister in that he was acting out his inability to handle the stress of living in the US - the guy became a heavy drinker following his stint in prison.

In the above story, the man acted out his frustration at being unable to reach his wife to shoot her dead. So he killed all those old people. He was unable to handle the stress of separation, even though he was also unable to adapt to married life.

While I feel sorry for the wife for having to apologize for his behavior, she's not in the wrong. Her words show caring and compassion, both for the victims' family, herself, and her husband.

His actions only show what a miserable coward he is. IMHO the news hides details like why they married twice, and whether he had a history of domestic abuse and alcoholism.

There is no call for this kind of reaction to separation unless there was a history of violence.

This is the result of HMO -- if Japan had a national social health program, the cost of medication would have been subsidized. So in essence, running a hospital like a business is an indirect cause of this tragedy.

Posted in: Man held for punching 50-yr-old woman on Saitama train over playing games on cell phone See in context

let's take this part of the news story one more time:

"Police said Jun Ando, a computer programmer and resident of Toda City, became angry on the train bound for Shinkiba at around 8 a.m., after the woman asked him to stop playing games on his cell phone as the train was so crowded. Ando told her to shut up and sprayed her with some colorful language, before punching her several times."

A woman asks a guy to stop playing games on his cell phone as the train is very crowded. Probably he had the sound on, and it annoyed her.

Even so, she did not address her specific issue: crowds are an annoyance, but having to listen to a noisy game is torture.

Thus is why I stated both parties are at fault: she was at fault because she used an indirect means of getting him to silence his cellphone.

It was not because the train was crowded but because the ignorance of her suffering led her to choose him, rather than to comment on the obliviousness of youth to unbearable conditions on the train.

However, his reaction is an abreaction, and out of line. It shows irresponsibility (forethought regarding your reaction to others when they make a simple request of you) and a lack of consideration for others.

It is doubtful I can read anything else into the news report.
