ReformedBasher, I'm afraid you will not find too many aviation specialists on this site as most of the people that post comments on Japan Today (like the above) are probably middle school students. However, the US-2s are quite similar to the old PBYs used for maritime SAR, recon, bombing missions, etc. Although a two-engine aircraft, it was a very versatile aircraft. It is still flying today as a water bomber.

The helicopters are CH-46s, not -47s. The Ospreys are much quieter than the choppers. Also, there have been planes at Yokota for many years so aircraft noise will not be new to local residents. Do your homework, people.
