Posted in: Brokerage worker loses paternity leave appeal in Japan See in context

You can't ask for your job back, but make the company look bad in public. Don't know which country this would work in... Apart from that not enough information to know who is right... Leaving in 2015, back in 2016... ?

I wish they had decided so earlier. I had to apply 2 weeks ago and walking into, sorry I mean pushing myself into the overcrowded immigration office was like a bad dream. It's been 2 weeks so I guess I made it out alive, but even though most were wearing masks there was a lot of suspicious coughing going on.... Great.

I hope everybody blaming her knows that there is no sick leave in Japan. People have to go to work even though they are sick. And taking vacation is also not an option for most people due to pressure from colleagues and superiors.

If anybody is to blame it is Japan's leadership (not just the current one) for not implementing rules that protect the workforce.

Posted in: Japan bars entry of foreign travelers from China's Hubei Province See in context

ehhh, so what about foreign residents ?

No mentioning of us. So when I leave Japan for business travel (not china) and I cough during immigration when returning ... I will be declined entry and then what?

I hope its just the lack of reporting the details.

Posted in: 80-year-old man, driving wrong way on expressway, killed in head-on collision See in context

There we go again. Most of the people here screaming about that people older then xx years shouldn't be allowed to drive... Do something and give them alternatives. Cars are necessary in Japan, so autonomous driving or affordable taxis in rural areas could help.

Also checking on older driver's ability to drive more frequently and thoroughly should help prevent such accidents. Just generally assuming every 80 year old is a bad driver is stupid. If we need to generalize then I would say every kei truck driver is a bad driver because they don't care about driving very much... just saying.

Posted in: Japan to tighten gasoline sale rules after Kyoto arson attack See in context

Why is nobody asking the obvious thing? "Which ID?"

Japanese do not have an ID. They could refer to the driver's license and probably most of the people getting gasoline will have one, but there are things others than cars that need gasoline.

I would live there. I love nature and hate people ;)

There are no technical jobs though... and that is the reason why most jung people leave for the bigger cities. Even if the birth rate goes up, they would not stay there. Fundamental problem.

Posted in: Less than 50% of workers in Japan receive full payment for overtime: survey See in context

I'm a bit irritated that 29% don't even know if they are paid. Is this part of the Japanese culture that you don't care about such things? When I asked questions about income tax etc. not even the people in charge could answer me some simple questions...

well anyway, I work for a medium sized Japanese engineering company and I actually get paid 100% because I report my overtime. There is even an extension to the limit when necessary. Seeing the figures I can guess that my colleagues report only half of their overtime if not less.

Getting paid is fine but it doesn't really compensate for the loss of free time and health issues you get by working till 10 pm every day. I was thinking about possibilities to minimize my workload... but apparently the only solution is to leave this workaholic country for good.

Posted in: Twitter comment starts online debate on working overtime See in context

I'm working for a company that has way to less workers to get the job done. Maybe they are calculating by 16h work time a day/worker, but it is impossible to meet the deadlines without doing overtime. Though I admit the working pace of some colleagues is... well it could be better. Time management is apparently non existent.

One thing that annoys me are unnecessary meetings held after regular working hours...

Service Overtime is forbidden (computer log off times are compared to your working hours report) so at least I have no problem writing down every minute :)

Posted in: McDonald’s gets flak for removing menus from counters See in context

In other countries those overhead and sideboard menus are usual. There are not menus at the counter. Since I'm used to it I make up my mind before stepping up to the counter... which might have confused a few japanese in the past :)

Since I was nearly part of such an accident I keep my distance from horses. They might be magnificent animals and I can understand that people like them, but they freak out about tiny things, for example orange plastic bags...

Posted in: Gamma rays from Fukushima rubble worse than radioactive cesium coming from plant, say officials See in context

In Shinichi Kuroki's world some mysterious natural phenomenal must have contaminated all the rubble with something (not cesium) that emits gamma rays... way to go Shinichi Kuroki :) He probably never heard of Fukushima or radiation before, got some numbers on his desk and even managed to misread them.

As many suggested, the release of the plant should still be 10million bq/h or more.
