The fact that he is sleeping is not as disturbing as the fact that no one else bothered to show up!

smithinjapan, I haven't seen repeated news about Ken Watanabe's win in the J Academy Awards, which are for the most part reported sparingly in the Japanese press. It is a non-event in Japan. The Oscars are a big event, even here, and like I wrote before, it will be interesting to see the reaction of the J-public. Maybe there will be some pressure for a change, and maybe with the Hatoyama government some changes will happen. Anything is possible.

I'm sure that the Japanese media will cover this, the Wide Shows rarely pass up controversial stuff. It will be interesting to see how much it is covered. Even more interesting will be seeing the reaction of the Japanese public to the movie, and if they pressure for changes. Congrats to the makers of the film. In my opinion it's things like this that will bring about changes, not the things that the echo-terrorist SS are doing down under.

Yeah, she is 36 years old, but very popular with young women in Japan. That is the demographic they are going for. Don't be fooled by age.

Posted in: Disney animated film returns to studio's hand-drawn roots See in context

This is an excellent move on the part of Disney. I'm glad they realized their mistake, though I wish they would have never stopped in the first place. One just has to look at the success of Miyazaki's films to realize that hand-drawn is the way to go. Pixar and computer generated animation has its place too, but the traditional hand-drawn Disney animations are great.

The J-League needs something. It can't hurt. She is an airhead, but kinda cute.

Posted in: Jero to make U.S. West Coast singing debut See in context

He already made his singing debut on the East coast. He sang at the DC cherry blossom festival, and his alma mater the University of Pittsburgh. This is his singing debut on the West coast, and his first official tour of the States. I don't think it means he's trying to make it in the US. He is just doing a tour to sing for his fans in the States. Good luck to him.

motogaijin, I think that has happened several times before. I believe 7-11 Japan is doing much better than the original 7-11. Mister Donuts is big in Japan, but I believe gone from the States. Also can't forget Tower Records. But there are many examples of chains that didn't make it here too. Just down to who has better management I guess. Wish they would open a Krispy Kreme in Hiroshima, but that's like wishing for a burger King in Hiroshima. There was a BK here, when they originally came to Japan. There was a Taco Time too...

Posted in: Japan's women curlers eliminated in round-robin stage See in context

Don't know why people are complaining about the coverage being focused on the events the Japanese are taking part in. It is frustrating, but after all this is Japan. It is unfortunate that Japan is no longer in the running for the curling gold, because as someone pointed out, we may not be able see the rest of the competition. Only highlights on the news. We will be guaranteed more than full coverage of the women's figure skating though....

Posted in: Japan says its whaling is conducted under international accord See in context

The reason I said it will be interesting to see how this plays out, is because I also don't see the international law that Japan has broken. What are Australia and New Zealand going to base their arguments on? Just wondering. Also, I believe that the meat that is left over after doing the research is sold, but I also believe that Japan is required to make use of it in accordance with IWC regulations. Can anyone clarify that?

Copycats.

Still, it will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

Too bad about Oda. I guess his laces broke. Regarding Plushenko, he is a great jumper, doing the quad-triple combination, but the competition is figure skating. Gotta be artistic too. Congratulations to all three of them. Looking forward to the ladies' competition.

TokyoXtreme, the windows are probably sliding windows, which I see in a lot of the schools, even elementary. These windows are probably open during the sultry summer months, because a lot of schools don't have air conditioners. I agree that they should be made so that no one can get out on the ledge, but there are so many things regarding the construction of Japanese schools that are accidents waiting to happen.

Posted in: Are there any sports that you think should be dropped from the Winter Olympics for whatever reason? See in context

Curling is great. It does take a lot of skill to do it. Have you even watched a match in its entirety? The USA v Japan game was really exciting. If we have to select one sport to drop, I'd say the biathlon. Skiing and shooting? Though I have to admit I enjoy watching it.

So she's cheating because a sticker wasn't on her sled. Give me a break. It was an oversight that her coach or equipment people and ultimately herself should have caught. Too bad to get all the way to the Olympics and have your dream destroyed by a sticker. Ganbarre Nozomi.

Kind of a sad story. In high school I enjoyed the risque lyrics of The Knack and actually went to see them in concert. They were a good band. After high school got into other musicians, but still listened to The Knack when I was feeling nostalgic. RIP Doug Fieger, thanks for the memories.

Kudos to Namie Amuro. If she doesn't want to do it, she doesn't have to. I'm really surprised that this was leaked to the papers. Are they trying to pressure her into doing it? Some of the comments here are like she is obligated to appear on TV. She isn't, and neither are any other famous people. She may lose visibility and some popularity, but that's her choice. After years of being hounded by the press and paparazzi, she wants to take a break. Let her live her life.

Posted in: The dumbing down of Japanese students See in context

I think the Ministry of Education needs to take a long hard look at their system and make some necessary changes. For one thing, there have to be penalties for not studying. "A Hosei University professor speaks of students who, asked to translate a passage from English to Japanese, are reduced to writing their translations in hiragana because they don’t know kanji." If I was teaching this class, those students would be penalized for not knowing the kanji. This happens thanks to the "conveyor belt" education system, and in some cases the lack of interest shown by the teachers.

It is sad that the dogs died, but the truly sad story is the state of the pet industry in Japan, as well as in other countries. I have had several pets in my life, but I say no more pets. If you want to see animals, go out and see them in the wild. Hope that Mr. Hashimoto will change some of the laws regarding the pet industry in Japan.

Posted in: Cafe Latte Almond Mocha See in context

Canned coffee is popular in Japan because it's easy to get and fairly cheap. God knows there are vending machines everywhere. These days you can get brewed coffee cheaper at Doutor or Mister Donuts, but a cup of coffee in a coffee shop used to run at least 300 yen. No refills. And besides in the winter those cans of coffee make great pocket warmers, and when you arrive at your destination, a lukewarm drink.

Always enjoy these castle stories, though I'm not sure the Michael Jackson comment is necessary. It's too soon after his death, and it's not even funny. Kiyosu castle does sound like a nice place to visit though. Speaking of concrete castles, I'll never forget the first time I saw Osaka castle. Looks great from a distance, but as a kid, I couldn't understand why there was carpeting and an elevator.
