That Japanese IS recruiter should be in jail and not an intermediary. You don't do dealings with criminals.

Children aren't allowed to watch porn in class, so why would it be okay to watch the gruesome real-life murder of people who didn't consent to their murder nor to their picture being taken?

I thought Japanese love order and cleanliness. And mind you, the city streets are really neat, but once you go inside the apartments, it’s a different story.

@igloobuyer

I’m all for rehabilitation, but there hasn’t been a single documented case of a person with antisocial personality disorder who has been “cured”. And I assume this girl is affected because she apparently said that she always wanted to kill someone. Oh, and jailtime isn’t about revenge (at least for me, since I don’t believe in free will) but it is for the protection of society.

Most of the major North American and Japanese cities are nice. If I could just turn back the time 40 years, cities were so much more exciting and original back then. These days, every downtown area looks the same with McD, Starbucks, H&M, gated communities, luxury apartments... so boring.

Exactly. That a society ruled by women would be more peaceful is a myth because women will continue to put ruthless and violent men on a pedestal.

It shouldn't matter whether they are male or female but the reality is that it already does: discrimination is the reason for the gross under-representation in the first place. Setting a goal to increase diversity and mitigate sexual discrimination in the workforce is hardly meaningless.

You cannot fight discrimination with discrimination. A real antidiscriminatory measure would be completely anonymous job applications without the indication of gender, age etc.

Kobuta Chan

UN and Human Right organizations are responsible death of peoples at sea because they encourage peoples to risk their life.

If UN and Human Right Organization do not pressure European nations accept all Asylum seekers from Africa and Middle East and then Governments will turn back boats and deport asylum seekers who are not refugees. Peoples won't be risking their life and waste their money if they know they will be deported to their own country as soon as they foot in Europe.

Exactly. Most of the refugees are not looking for political asylum but are economic refugees. So right now, we are letting everyone in, we can't say in 1 year oh sorry, first come first served - you can't get in anymore! Either let only the political refugees in or everybody, the way it is done right now is not fair for either refugees or the local population.

Posted in: Australia hails success halting boatpeople See in context

Australians and Americans have no reason to complain about refugees. In Europe we have to bear the brunt of the countless American wars in the Middle East. While Australia mostly gets asylum seekers thirsting for education, eager to work and adapt, Europeans have to deal with 90% young uneducated male refugees, a breeding ground for future terrorism, crime and social unrest.

Posted in: Women who attract 'chikan,' and women who don’t: An illustrated guide See in context

The artist completely missed the point and risks spreading a false message. The sexiness or amount of clothing has nothing to do with the likelihood of being harassed. The only inference we get from the survey is that the demeanor of the potential victim has an influence on the chance of getting raped. The picture should show 5 equally dressed women in different postures, from shy to confident.

It's very simple. If you take an indiscriminate wide shot of a crowd of people in public, you are fine. If you single out a specific clearly identifiable person on the picture, you have to ask for permission. This is privacy law in many countries.

Who are we to decide who wears what? It's not like they're showing up in no clothes.

Actually, it is the same thing. As we don't allow nudity or certain uniforms in public, we may as well prohibit the covering of the face, hair or whatever for the same cultural reasons. Because western culture is not just a spineless, ahistoric construct.

Posted in: Do you think Twitter, YouTube and other social media should remove images of grisly murders, such as the execution of U.S. journalist James Foley or the 7-year-old boy holding a severed head in Syria, See in context

The main problem I have with execution videos is not the display of brutality, but the infringement of personality rights by degrading the victims and their family for a second time, now publicly for all to see. Blurring out the victims faces won't be enough though. After all videos of rape and child abuse are also not just blurred but generally illegal and servers hosting this material are taken down and uploaders punished. So since it is already possible to block such material from the net, it's best to punish uploaders and not viewers based on infringing personality rights.

Still facebook, twitter, youtube and others are waiting far too long to take down flagged violent content. However, when there is sex involved, they are faster than the speed of light at deleting it. What is more degrading and dangerous? A beheading or a nipple? How are execution videos any more legal than child porn?

I doubt that. Yes, mostly men are perpetrators of physical violence, but also mostly men are victims of other men. Of course when sexual assault comes into the equation mostly females are affected. But that's why sexual assault and violent crime are different criminal categories.

I agree. The coming demographic imbalance will only affect 2 generations or so. Look at the low number of births today, there won't be many elders to care for in 80 years. I think a population decline is much more healthy for Japan and its self-sufficiency in the long-term.
