@ vanityofvanities

I concur.

.

The pervasive concentrated stillness after one of these typhoons always gives me a bit of an eerie feeling.

The photo above capture it well.

.

Please note in face of this epic downpour- the streets are not flooded.

That's because Japan has highly efficient underground water drainage systems that work to avoid flooding in its downtown core.

[ I think there is no other G7 metropolis that has a similar eflective infrastructure in place}

WilliB: Typhoon, earthquake.... tourists are getting a real Japan experience this weekend

.

Indeed!

The tourists & visiting rugby fans -plus, the 'outside' world, whose eyes have been focuses on the World Rugby games - can now witness for themselves

1 ) the efficient, systematic emergency preparedness Japan has in place

2 ) the professional competence of first responders

) the grace and equanimity in which the Japanese population responds / works through this degree of calamity.

In this area, Japan supersedes what even most G7 countries (not to mention those that fall outside of this) can think to offer their residents.

Jefflee :I would also slam the decision to choose Japan as a host during its notorious typhoon season.

.

There is never a perfect time.

There are many factors involved in selecting countries

Scotland's coach is ill advised to cause such a flurry over a game directive he knowingly agreed to..

Haa Nemui . . . but these threats of legal action at this time kind of turn me off Scotland.

.

Not so much Scotland, but Scotland's rugby coach is showing poor sportsmanship.

It's not like Joseph and the Japan Team conjured up the typhoon.

Weather is the weather.

I could happen in Scotland, too .

They are known for their high gales and hurricanes.

Sh'mon M4sada"s point is well taken.

Just to add - at least - Hari Nada, and the other unnamed J guy - admit they were recipients of the Ghosn / Kelly scheme - albeit unknowing.

But they acknowledge their part.

Ghosn refuses to admit his culpability even in face of evidence.

Re: Uchida - his international experience works very well for him.

Growing up in an international setting in the formative years, as a child - outside of Japan - moves him out of having that obsequious fawning anxiety many Japanese - even in management - have re: foreigners.

Hope his undergrad degree in theology at Doshisha /Kobe helped build integrity.

Loren impsum : But the most shocking: they themselves have admitted to being overcompensated, and yet, they received immunity from prosecutors in exchanges for information. This is truly scandalous.

.

It's not scandalous at all.

Happens all the time in the court system - look through case lae in US, UK, Australia, Canada.

Convicts / those involved in a "crime" turn evidence; they 'plea bargain; whistleblowers cop a deal with prosecution.

That's often how prosecutors can advance evidence in building their case.

Very typical.

@ Yubaru.

Agreed.

Japan should take note ( as well as other nations that think US will have their back).

Abandoning nations is a kind of MO for the US.

When it gets too drawn out, or too costly, or too tenuous for an outright win, " Managment" closes shop.

It's terrible .

Hundreds of thousands of peoples lives will be snuffed out - mosty Yazidis, Syriac Christians and Kurds. ( so what a few less ???)

Incredible !

Erdogan also warned the European Union not to call Ankara's incursion into Syria an "invasion."

If its not an outright act of invasion into the independent Kurdish state, what is ir?

It's not a tea party.

Once again we see the UN and Free World countries unabashedly indifferent to the occupation of a foreign territory by Turkey at the cost of the ethnic peoples lives.

Shades of Rwanda or Ukraine. . .????

@zichi

Wishing you the best - successful surgery and smooth recovery. !

It's amazing how medical technology has made so many interventions easier, more accurate (with the inclusion of tiny cameras) and recovery faster bc the traditionally invasive surgeries have been circumvented..

That's a breakthrough. Really - for those who have a biopsy - reduces the pain.

Japanese have come up with various innovations around needles that facilitate medical intervention.

i think it is standard practice in Japan to use plastic needles for blood tests or blood transfusions, for example.

Whereas in most other countries that I know if steel needles are still used.

There is even a biodegradable needle available in Japan for diabetics who are required to test their blood daily.

Though I agree with IloveCoffee's sentiment - I think - the preponderance of Nobel prizes being awarded to researchers in the disciplines of science and medicine in 'democratic' countries with 'free enterprize' systems is an endorsement of the scientific freedom and support within these systems .

( Whereas ,China also has capitalism - but its within a totalitarian paradigm)

True.

Plastic has been with us since the late 1800's ,starting with celluloid which molded wasmade into billiard balls ,placing ivory . And it, then also became the primary agent for photography.

We cannot live without plastic today.

The wonder is that it is only now - so late in the evolution of plastic , when we are over our heads in plastic - are those in leadership beginning to make attempts of re-purpose these products.

@1glenn

That is a success outcome. Congrats!

It was a tough journey, to be sure!

The piece that worked in your favour is the prompt medical attention you received by first responders who KNEW how to identify and apply appropriate intervention.

It's true - the synapses in our brain can be rewired and the brain can develop new electrochemical transmissions to compensate for damage - however the key is early and appropriately targeted intervention.

Being uninsured and having gradual symptom onset were the factors most strongly associated with a longer delay.

The general public, for the most part , is not cognizant around how to ID the significant symptoms of either heart attack Or stroke.
