Posted in: The percentage of online shopping will grow and accordingly, I'm hoping that it will increase our absolute transaction volume. This may be a turning point for online shopping industry in Japan. See in context

I think taxes are still required online, but maybe some companies cheat and don't do sales tax or maybe if you buy from overseas companies there is no sales tax.

Either way, this will just hurt regular stores and hurt the economy as a whole. It'll take a decade just to recover from this price shock, if ever.

Did he say something like "I've got a gun, please don't make me pull this trigger."

I think because most people living did not experience them, he meant, "fresh in our imaginations."

Posted in: Fire hits Fukui nuclear plant, but no radiation leaks See in context

Nuclear plants have to report every small thing like this. Even if a door is left open where it should be closed, that becomes a reportable violation. This fire had nothing to do with MOX fuel or nuclear technology.

Abe should make Bitcoin (or NEM) the official currency. Then we would have a huge boom in the economy.

Bitcoin's Proof-of-Work P2P system solves the Byzantine Generals problem, negating the need or ability of regulation.

Does regulation keep banks, companies, or governments from failing?

Media and anti-nuke crowd killed more people than the nuclear disaster (which was zero, by the way) by spreading FUD. At the same time, they claim to hold a monopoly on the interests of the people of Fukushima. It's really sad.

People will suddenly stop buying things on 4/1, which will crash the Nikkei and cause people to lose confidence in the economy. This will crash the economy for at least 10 years.

Posted in: Masuzoe says he wants to make Tokyo No. 1 city in world See in context

I like Tamogami better, but this guy seems okay. I think practically very little will change. Not sure why nuclear power was even discussed at all. The governor of Tokyo is the nuclear czar of Japan. If he says to start reactors today, no one will listen to him, because it is controlled by a different branch of government.

Posted in: JAL to introduce in-flight Wi-Fi service for domestic flights beginning in July See in context

Don't see the need for expensive wifi in the sky? EM radiation is really bad for you and flying already stresses the body enough. Also, people will abuse it and just watch porn in the sky. Not a friendly environment for travelling.

The aluminum could be better used elsewhere. Just the loss of productivity for having to calculate 8% in your head is going to cost the economy more than the tax increase will make.

Posted in: If it’s just prices that increase without wages, there will be a tremendous social cost. Abe and his administration understand the risk from the side effects of his policies. See in context

Prices will go up, but our wages will go down. The US/Chinese/European economy is about to all come down. No one will be buying Japanese products.

Posted in: Nuclear power is set to disappoint, again See in context

Even considering the people that died at Chernobyl and the 0 people who have died at Fukushima, nuclear power is much safer than other industries. It is likely that more people have died from dismantling iPhones.

The fact is that nuclear power has saved lives and continues to save lives compared with using other available technologies: http://www.forbes.com/sites/timworstall/2013/07/01/nuclear-power-has-saved-the-lives-of-many-more-people-than-it-has-killed/

To be against nuclear power is not only anti-intellectual and anti-environmental, but it is to be against life itself.

Nice opinion piece, but the author doesn't seem to know any of the details of the currency (it isn't just the buyer and seller that interact, but the entire networks works together to verify a transaction).

I suggest reading http://www.michaelnielsen.org/ddi/how-the-bitcoin-protocol-actually-works/

That being said, bitcoin is perhaps the biggest thing happening in technology in the world right now. Ignore it at your own peril.
