Posted in: Japan adopts new policy promoting greater use of nuclear energy See in context

This article reeks of anti-science, anti-nuclear propaganda or in the most generous terms, extreme ignorance of the facts around the energy situation.

Two tasks lie before the world regarding electricity: 1) Decarbonization of electricity AND 2) A massive increase in the amount of electricity produced.

The later goal is imperative so that we can electrify EVERY sector of the economy - cars, buildings, manufacturing, etc. We also need to consider that developing countries will also need electricity on the order of a few times what is produced per capita in the rich world today, lest they have a future of burning fossil fuels to drive, etc.

Renewables, like nuclear, have many externalized costs, namely to do with curtailment (batteries, etc). There is also no possible way to scale either renewables or nuclear alone to power a fully electric human civilization. There is not enough lithium to mine to make batteries for every house to store solar of night use.)

Hence, we NEED nuclear AND renewables... or we will destroy the world.

Posted in: Turkey fumes at Sweden in NATO membership dispute See in context

Finland and Sweden should absolutely NOT follow through on any appeasement to Turkey until Erdogan has followed through on ratifying their entry to NATO.

Erdogan has a history of bad faith negotiation and reneging on promises after he gets what he wants. He has already signaled approval for Sweden and Finland's entry only to suddenly renege and demand additional concessions.

Sweden and Finland, at this point, should also consider formally opposing Turkey's EU candidacy if Erdogan keeps this up.

Posted in: Hokkaido care home requires sterilization of mentally disabled couples See in context

This changed my mind on this issue:

A distant relative of mine with mental disabilities had 5 children with his wife, also mentally disabled. Over 8 years, 3 of their children have died. 1, who unintentionally killed his baby brother at age 4, now lives in a care center getting regular counseling to recover from the trauma - AZ state has finally stepped in to take the children.

Relatives tried constantly to help this family and reserve judgement, unfortunately, what we all knew in our gut, turned out to be true: some people are not fit to be parents.

Unfortunately the world is more complicated than everyone "has a right to bear children".

who'll pay for installment? Japanese people who try to get home for their family.

Yeah, and they'll also SAVE money in the medium and long term with lower energy bills.

By your logic, we should all live in flammable, earthquake vulnerable wooden boxes with no insulation because of the upfront cost of quality buildings...

Posted in: Australia takes aim at Apple, Microsoft over child protection online See in context

AU's e-Safety Commissioner's goal of protecting children is right; but this approach is a non-solution and carries an unimaginable cost:

Do they understand this will also be used by China, Iran, and every other bad actor government to arrest political dissidents?

Do they know that Saudi Arabia may use this to find and execute LGBTQ+ people?

Meanwhile, child abusers will just migrate to another service...

Have they learned nothing from the absolutely abysmal war on drugs?

Not a smoker but calling as I see it. NZ can no longer call itself a liberal democracy and still tolerate this degree of micromanagement of people's personal lives.

Posted in: Mitsubishi Motors' all-new eK X EV wins 2022-2023 Japan Car of the Year and K Car of the Year See in context

Cars are not “solving social problems” … they are creating them.

And public transit is not on the decline. On the contrary, look at the disastrous suburban sprawl and deadly traffic in American cities and it’s easy to see why cities around the world are aggressively moving to outright ban personal cars from city centers while also, with high public approval, positioning public transit + bicycles + walkablity are the future.

Best places to tax without damaging the economy:

Wealth tax

Stock buyback tax

Securities transaction tax for high-frequency traders (tax the selling of stocks and ETFs by day-trading, economic parasites)

Absolutely braindead proposal.

On the contrary, all healthcare should be free. Raise taxes if necessary.

If the deficit is a serious concern, maybe we shouldn't have blown hundreds of billions of yen subsidizing various multinational, multibillion dollar brands via the Tokyo Olympics...

There are about a thousand things that we can cut that are a lower priority than health care.

Posted in: Tokyo police to issue ‘red tickets’ to cyclists violating traffic laws See in context

Amazing that car drivers can regularly kill bicyclists and pedestrians while routinely violating traffic laws and yet police are deciding to crackdown on bicyclists.

A few years ago, a screaming, entitled BMW driver hit me while I was on a bicycle. She was CLEARLY violating the law and could have easily killed me. The police told me that it doesn’t matter because pedestrians and bicyclists always carry some percentage of the fault. Her insurance company pursued me for months asking for me to pay to fix a scratch on her car until I threatened to sue.

It would be great if the justice system here could move into the 1900s at least.

Posted in: Campaign signs Pennsylvania booby-trapped with razor blades See in context

This reminds be of the time Trump supporters committed arson during the 2020 election and spray-painted "BLM anti-fa for Biden" on the building, trying to blame Democrats for their crime.

Also last month, PA GOP candidate Oz PAID people to shoot up drugs on camera so they could blame Democrats for it...

These booby-trapped signs are OBVIOUSLY set by GOP campaigners who have a history of non-stop, bad-faith acting, sabotage, and deceit. Anyone who believes these traps were set by Democratic activists is drunk on Tucker Carlson.

Posted in: Germany's Scholz calls for bigger European Union See in context

Any enlargement without reform is a mistake. They need to:

Switch all areas of governance to QMV (Qualified Majority Voting); eliminate unanimity rules for areas of foreign policy and taxation that are used by some countries to blackmail the rest of the EU (like Hungary's Orban)

Radically simplify the EU be eliminating the EU Commission, Counsel of EU, and rotating presidency.

Empower the EU parliament to form a government with a PM!

Government can only be accountable when the population understands how it works...

Ballsy to ask for consideration from the EU right after spending months trashing the EU, blaming the West for Russia's invasion, and rooting for Russia to win in annexing Ukraine.

Imagine the disaster it would be to allow Serbia into the EU only have them obstruct legislation and blackmail the EU with the unanimity rule the next time Russia invades another country like Moldova or Georgia.

Unbelievably stupid idea for several reasons:

It's a performative show of disapproval that accomplishes nothing.

It stops money from exiting Russia and flowing into EU businesses and wages.

It stops the "brain drain" from Russia, which is the most powerful weapon the EU has against Putin.

It hurts normal, powerless people; not aristocrats.

Singapore boldly steps into the 1950s!

Any country that cannot grant LGBTQ+ people full equal rights in 2022 should be absolutely ashamed. That includes Japan where, as covered by Japan Today, a court recently stole a trans person's legal guardianship of their own children!

LGBTQ people should not have to wait another decade for bigots to "evolve" on these issues...
