It will be fascinating to read Trump fan’s defense of this asininity

I'm no Trump fan, but have you forgotten the Clinton Bush handover?

Tokyo, Japan needs uncertainty, even in Osaka is anxious about Olympic travels, and Osaka is really feeling it economically.

Drop the games asap, and give people some certainty. It was never a good idea even before covid, with covid, it's utterly dumb.

Here's hoping the vaccination program achieves result for Russia. I feel for the Russian people, because even with a compliant population, Russia appears to be severely affected by this virus.

If vac doesn't work, I can see China punished militarily, or as a minimum, territorial and monetary compensation demand from Putin. His tenure looks very shaky now.

It's entertainment...but I get a feeling throughout the movie that it's an island full of girls auditioning for Harvey Weinstein.

IMHO, the story telling would have been more fluid and credible had it been a Polynesian island with Polynesian actresses.

Posted in: Japan prepares for digital currency, in line with China and others See in context

CBDC are being created to avoid using the Dollar for large international money transfers.

Would you care to elaborate? China has had a SWIFT alternative for international transfer since 2015 (CIPS). But it's much, much less smaller in total transaction in CNY than USD through SWIFT.

Wouldn't introducing yet another currency dilute the power of CIPS CNY even more?

Personally, I think the CCP is always about control, they have strict controls over the export of money to destinations outside China, but their control is regularly circumvented, hence they need a currency that they can trace with more granularity. Same with other central banks, it's all about anti-money-laundering.

Some of them were speaking in Chinese, saying, "Trump is the only person who can resist (Chinese) President Xi Jinping."

Biden is quiet as a mouse, how 'usual'...

If Biden is quiet, surely that's a prompt for the Trump side to be vocal.

I thought Trump has lost his marbles. I was wrong, it's much worse, he's on a scorched earth binge and he's going to destroy the GOP and what's left of goodwill the GOP have. He knows they're not going to back him at the next election.

As if our lives aren't compromised by tech enough already! But hey bring it on, as long as deposit taking institutions are willing to reimburse depositors and creditors for any loss due to hacking and other nefarious activities.

Posted in: Japan 'extremely behind' in promoting gender equality, gov't admits See in context

I am now on the fence as to whether each nation should celebrate gender diversity pursuant to cultural diversity and societal factors.

Some might applause the Scandinavian countries for gender equality metrics, but to me it apoears as though men are adopting toxic masculinity traits or overt politically correct facades just to adjust to gender equality progress, and trust within society has suffered. I certainly would rather live elsewhere.

banana peel there daring Trump

I agree with Trump, but it's no banana peel, it's basic algebra, the veto can be overrided by the majority vote. Isn't Trump setting himself up for ridicule?

should be a massive wake up call for South Korea to dump it's Anti-Japan Tribalism

Yes, very apt point there. SK under MJI is leaning ever closer to NK and China. It is the only country in Asia with a travel corridor with China, even during a pandemic that originated in China. Chinese developers are already eyeing Guryong (next to Gangnam), and there's enormous pressure heaped on SK conglomerates NOT to move supply chain from China.

I feel for the people of SK, I think in time you'll see SK turn into another Pakistan (or worse), and will be the first to be swallowed into the CCP sphere, if not by force via NK, then natural attrition. South Koreans have no idea what they're in for.

Posted in: Film spotlights Vietnamese temporary workers' plight in Japan See in context

Fujimoto san can't be a very popular director in Japan but good on him for doing something about something that needs done.

I don't need to watch the movie to learn about Japanese altruism though. In the 50ties-70ties Japan was amongst donor countries along with the 5 eyes for the Colombo Plan. Hundreds of thousands of doctors, engineers, lawyers etc. were trained, Japan accepted a mere 1,800 or so students, and many didn't graduate. The same story is reflected in funding, Japan contributed about 100 millions vs USA in the billions, in fact Japan's figures were very similar to New Zealand, and was widely thought of as a bit of a joke amongst the diplomatic community.

Fast forward to modern day, Russia and Ukraine also have similar trainee programs for Vietnamese, producing elite corporate leaders for contemporary Vietnam. Japan on the other hand has labour exploitation disguised as technical training.

Yes, the film is much needed but all it show is history repeating itself.
