Two years and one week before the Tokyo Olympics open, the IOC published a detailed schedule Wednesday of when competitions will take place

I had a bleak hope they'll change the dates before announcing the schedule to save both athletes and fans from possible heatstrokes and sickness..Oh well..

@PTownsend

I mentioned salarymen in particular because I have never seen them giving their seats up to anyone. EVER! Most commonly it's women giving up seats, then schoolkids and students.. Ojisans and salarymen? Nope, not happening.

@kurisupisu

Why must Americans always need enemies to feel good about themselves?

Oh, this one is easy-when you are raised on superhero movies, you kind of think you and anyone in your nation is superior and more important than anyone else. And to be a superhero one needs to find a villain, or appoint them. Also, since you are a superhero nation, you need to be completely blind or forgiving to your own wrongdoings. That's about it.

This one thing that pisses me off immensely, especially how able-bodied salarymen pretend they don't notice pregnant women or elderly standing right in front of them-whether priority seats or not. I have never noticed any signs of shame or remorse from these people when I would give up my seat to their nationals-this could be their elderly parents or pregnant wives in this country, but they keep sitting.

Posted in: Japan probing abuse of health insurance system by foreign residents See in context

But there have been a string of incidents whereby foreigners fraudulently obtained resident status, for example, by posing as students studying in Japan.

Aren't all these komuin paid to do the fact-checking? I am a bit surprised and somewhat in disbelief such situations are actually possible with all the 'kakunins'.

As for the health insurance for the dependents, it should apply to those actually living in Japan long-term. If someone comes here short-term just to use dependent medical insurance and leave, they or people who helped them should be made to pay the full price when leaving. It could be realized IF multiple disparate social services systems had some connection and data exchange, which as of now isn't there.

As Trump says Putin 'not my enemy', skeptics in U.S. see danger

No way!!We should all see other states as enemies otherwise how to get additional funding to NATO? How to justify having military bases around the world? And, most important one- if are not afraid of each other how will arms manufacturers make money?

Add more hatred, control the world.

And most of these child abuse news start with "a twenty-something parent". Now I see why late marriage is actually good for the Japanese- they don't seem to be able to handle babies before that. Some can't handle them even after 30, but twenty-somethings as parents is like a death sentence.

The incident looks even more funny after the UK government spoke against Trump-Putin meeting. And they just reported like a day ago that those 'who poisoned the Skrypals' left the country right after the crime. Did they return? Or the special agencies failed?Or they ll make up some new stories so people don't get bored?

Lets see how the UK government tries to stitch it all together.

I kinda lost track of how Skrypals are doing. They don't seem to be walking free..

'Super intelligent robots' made me LOL. As much intelligent and useful as Pepper that cant even move around for an hour without smelling of burnt resin.

Japan will lead the way with this tech

That's obviously why they bought Boston Dynamics

Realistically, these okimono 'robots' could easily be replaced with Amazon Echo or Google Home doing the same job, but without the 'wow effect'. Dinosaurs at the reception desk sound entertaining though.

Posted in: Moon suggests Russian gas be piped to Koreas, Japan See in context

@Akie

Shikisai, your 3 years idea is 7 years too late. If Moon was born 10 years earlier, it might be possible, but right now, questionable.

You should probably re-read my comment, you have some attention problems.

First of all, the idea is not mine, but even more important-its not Moon's either. The idea to build pipelines from Russia existed for decades and was lobbied mostly by Niigata and Hokkaido-coz in both cases these prefectures would become more important and maybe create some new industries. 3 years ago it was again on the agenda proposed by the Japanese side. But from the point of feasibility its a pie in the sky.

Meanwhile, building gas pipeline from Russia to South Korea was not possible previously due to NK regime, the problem that might be resolved sometime soon. If the NK and SK governments build enough trust by then, they can run it as a joint project. Obviously, there are economical reasons why such project is proposed by Moon-that is, pipe gas is cheaper than LNG.

Will Russia do it or not is a different question-they just recently built a huge PL to China, pumping most Siberian gas in that direction.

Posted in: Moon suggests Russian gas be piped to Koreas, Japan See in context

I like these layman's comments XD

You'd be surprised but it was a Japanese idea to lay gas pipe from Russia to Japan some 3 years ago.

While the gas line to Koreas seems feasible, laying gas pipe on the sea bottom with high seismic activity is a big risk and no one simple has such technology. If Japan would want to get gas from the Korean pipes, they'll have to scratch their heads, not Russia.

Even if there was no lack of technology problem, Russia probably learnt from the EU case, and wouldn't singlehandedly build such pipes. More so, if these pipes are to connect Korea and Japan.

Posted in: Pet insurance market in Japan expanding due to rising vet bills See in context

This industry def needs more control-the price setting for the pets is ridiculous! And those not sold for the exorbitant prices are then killed with gas (still wondering what's the proportion of killed vs sold. I assume its quite horrible, but the industry keeps the prices up-they are not the ones paying with own lives anyway).

While average vets are not too expensive, since Japanese pets live quite long lives, they also develop cancers and age-related diseases, and treating those IS expensive. Plus hairdressers costing more than the human ones. Plus pet hotels, etc etc.

Posted in: Woman killed, others injured after 90-year-old driver hits pedestrians near Tokyo See in context

'Some elderly driver hit someone' kind of news keeps popping up, but nothing is done about it. Yes, these guys should be obliged to retake the driving tests on basis, because otherwise they are risking taking someone's lives (plus, their families will face the burden of paying the compensation to the family of the injured-if not dead- person).

In my experience, the most outrageous drivers are the ojiisans in the old Toyota taxis-I've been close to be hit by them on a pedestrian crossing not once. I also felt scared taking a ride in their cars-recently one of them took a wrong turn while taking me home (coz he rejected using the navigation) and to get back to the right road he was backing the car up the hill on the one-lane road. decided to never get in those old cabs again.

How can negotiations lead to anything when the parties are negotiating 2 different things:Russia is after a Peace treaty, Japan is after the islands (where they dont intend to live anyway, but more water for fishing nearby,hey!).

Realistically, Russia never offered the islands back since they got them after joining war against Japan according to the Yalta treaty.

Posted in: Power of choice: The future of hydrogen-powered cars in Japan See in context

I have a more pessimistic view on hydrogen cars-by the time they are generally available, efficient and safe, the market will be saturated the self-driving (to various extents) EV cars.

This project reminds me of the company I used to work for with the similar attitude 'we know the project has low chances to succeed, but its our idea,so we keep investing into it and blah-blah'..(didn't end well).

In EV case,the energy problem can be somewhat resolved by solutions similar to Tesla's Powerwall -battery unit charged from solar tiles, that allows to store energy and use it both for home and EV charging.

@Strikebreaker555

Make sure you check the location of the city in question. Where did you see an island?

The project has been discussed for at least 5 years, and knowing the quotations Japanese companies give this outcome is a no surprise. The 'its the Japanese quality' thing is in the past now, everyone goes after cheap and fast things. I am not sure about the Turkish companies, but the Koreans are not anywhere worse in engineering, while being more flexible.

Kim is exchanging his nuclear testing for better food and a chance to see girls bands dancing in mini skirts))

Seriously though, I think the NK finally understood (maybe after visiting the Olympics on the SK side) that the Koreas will never be united under North as a leader. Also, current leadership in South Korea is much less aggressive towards North than the previous one. Plus Trump, though unpredictable, is much threatening to NK leaders than Obama or Hillary-if she won. they probably weighted all these to start negotiations. And a chance to watch K-pop, of course XD

The Nuremberg Trials punished the Nazi for their atrocities including the death camps but the only war trials for the Unit 731 were held by the Soviets and Chinese.

..because 70% of tortured people were Chinese and 30%-Soviet soldiers. Plus occasional Koreans who were considered traitors.

Members of this unit got immunity at the tribunal from the US for sharing their "research data".

I think acknowledging the fact is a big step for Japan.

"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others"-we have been living in this world for quite a while,and though it was initially written to describe a totalitarian state, not it describes how our world works.

The less equal states need to follow rules and abide laws, collect evidence and follow court decisions/resolutions of agencies in charge. More equal states don't have to play by these rules, they can grab their homies and go solve ailments of this world with a panacea of missile strikes.

A great 21st century diplomacy and leadership example to follow ...((

On the side note, WHO (!!) was citing anonymous (of course) source claiming there was 500 victims in Douma. Its the organization created to protect humans health, helping interested parties to justify a missile strike. The roots are deep, how corrupt is the whole system (( The UN and the security council are also 2 useless organizations, getting huge funds. Only the people working there benefit from their existence.

Russia claimed the Syrian chemical attack was made by Britain and also the agent attack in Salisbury UK? Where is their evidence for that accusation?

Ehm, as if Britain or the US provided any evidence in either cases XD When the UK accuses someone-they don't provide any evidence, when they are accused-they claim they need evidence. Strange logic,isn't it?
