Odd then, that the same voices often crop up in favour of smacking kids.

Abuse is abuse.

Sorry but this makes zero sense. Once again, tell me, what is the excuse for abusing a child to the point of death?

I'm not talking about another adult here as the victim - which of course can have grey areas. I'm talking about a small defenseless child. So, again, there is no excuse and never will be. I hope both these lowlifes get the absolute worst possible torment and a life of living hell either in jail or in the grave, ideally both.

Anyone who can come on here after reading that little girl's letter and actually spend their time berating other posters about "barbaric comments" towards two monsters is just heartless.

Is advocating barbaric violence the only response towards barbaric violence?

Towards two subhuman monsters who beat, starved and who knows what other horrible things to an innocent child who literally pleaded for her life in the only way she likely knew how? Yes, absolutely.

There should be zero sympathy for people who murder children.

Don't assume that all mothers who kill their kids are evil through and through. (though some undoubtedly are)

Murdering a 2 year old child/baby by strangulation is arguably as evil as you can get regardless of the circumstances. Unless she was in a burning building and didn't want her son to suffer a horrible painful death, there is no excuse for doing such a thing to an innocent child.

I don't have and never will have sympathy for such a person.

What use is this guy to society?  Mental illness or not he murdered two innocent girls not to mention a score of adults..  Get rid of him, death penalty and let's move on.  Why even waste time and money storing this PoS somewhere?

I can find fault in it. If it turns out this story is something entirely different than what you have assumed, you will have smeared this woman's name. There is a lot of fault in that.

Smeared a woman's name who murdered a baby by stuffing him into a septic tank (the only fact we know)..  Yes, I'm more than happy to.

There is also a lot of fault of siding with a murderer over a victim.  This isn't a case of self-defense we are talking about here.

We simply don't know & to label the mother as a "monster" is simply unfair.

Since you don't know if anyone was bullying, raping, or hurting her, and if she was mentally ill or whatever then it's not siding against the baby to want to know more about a situation before say, calling for the death penalty.

There is no situation - be it bullying, rape, mental illness, stress, etc. - however unfortunate it may be, that can somehow even remotely "justify" (i.e. give one a sense of understanding or pity towards) what this woman ultimately did.

Analyze the circumstances any way you want.  At the end of the day, the fact still remains that she not only killed her baby, but did it in such an awfully inhumane gruesome way.  She's a monster, plain and simple, and I hope karma comes around to give this woman what she justly deserves.

Will it make you happier?

It would absolutely make me a happier yes.

At the end of the day, who cares what her circumstances were - she flushed a defenseless baby down the TOILET like a monster!  Think about that for a second..

It amazes me people on JT who take the easy way out and simply say "its a tragedy" and then downvote and berate those of us who side with the innocent baby over the awful excuse for a mother.  Again - it doesn't matter what her circumstances were in such an awful case of murder and disregard for human life.

RIP to the girl. ZERO sympathy for the child murderer -- and no matter how much you guys might sympathize with her, that is what she is. Lock her up, for life.

100% agree and couldn't have said it better myself.

Highlighting a a problem that always existed but now has gotten more attention. A big problem nonetheless.

A simple Google search shows that child abuse cases here in Japan are at an all time high.

If nothing else, the one thing we can do as residents of this country is donate to the Orange Ribbon Japan organization which raises awareness on and acts to prevent child abuse. http://www.orangeribbon.jp/

Nonetheless, I hope this father gets whats coming to him sooner, rather than later...

Please show us the evidence that proves this woman was mentally sound.

Please show us the evidence otherwise.

Personally attacking others for their viewpoints, calling us "internet bullies" and un-Christian (even though Im not a Christian) is getting ridiculous.

What track record? What other incidents has this woman been involved in?

Not this woman, but many others. Incidents as in child murder / record high child abuse in this country. Next week we will have another news article just like this one.

Posted in: Mother dies after jumping from 8th floor with 3-year-old son See in context

Compassion for someone who is so sick they are unable to tell the difference between right and wrong, to the point that in their insanity they think the right thing to do is kill their child. Maybe you don't feel compassion for someone who has a broken mind, and that's your right. But others of us do. I hope you're not Christian though, as that would go against Christian principles (note that I'm not Christian).

Maybe you feel compassion for a mentally sound murderer, and that's your right. But others of us don't. We can play this back and forth everytime an article like this comes out. Let's be honest, there will be many more judging by the track record thus far.

Posted in: Mother dies after jumping from 8th floor with 3-year-old son See in context

It's the difference between feeling compassion for this woman, and hatred towards her.

Compassion for attempted murderer of a child? Just like compassion for other women who murder their children here? That's quite the position you are proud of taking.

Someone in the throes of mental illness is unable to differentiate right from wrong.

So now you are making assumptions yourself. Look, it's simple. If this woman just wanted to kill herself, fine. The second she took her son with her, that's being selfish, by default.

Additonally, you should consider following your three points above yourself. You don't know the facts yourself but still feel comfortable implying that I and others are "internet bullies" for having hearts and compassion for children lost to murder from their own parents (the only FACT known in these cases).

Posted in: Mother dies after jumping from 8th floor with 3-year-old son See in context

Please share with us the inside information you both have to know that this woman wasn't mentally ill.

So she magically becomes mentally ill when her son is 3 years old, not, you know, before she decided to get pregnant?

Furthermore, does it matter? This defense of "we don't know all the facts" and "she was probably mentally ill" that is constantly brought up doesn't address the fact (fact, mind you) that she is selfish - plain and simple - for trying to murder a child as opposed to simply taking her own life.

It amazes me how people are more concerned about "internet bullies" of murderers rather than the innocent lives that usually (thankfully not this time) are lost for selfish reasons.

Posted in: Parents arrested after 8-month-old baby dies of suspected malnutrition, neglect See in context

I usually get extremely upset from reading these articles again and again and again of a growing problem in this country that continues to go unchecked, but with this one, as a father of a 10 month old, I was on the verge of tears.

These people, BOTH the mother and the father, are murderers - worthless to society and better off dead. Their history growing up, the age difference in their marriage, post partum depression - whatever it may be, none of it matters as absolutely nothing could come close to excusing their actions.

That baby was depending on them, scared, confused, hungry - crying each and every night wondering why his own mother would not give him even milk... How can a human being let a baby starve and just leave him there? Via the news - they didn't even bring the baby when they went grocery shopping! Yet they could provide the dog with a winter coat...

Like a Japanese news caster said this morning - "this is not abuse, this is murder". BOTH the mother and father don't deserve jali time, they deserve the worst, most agonizing death imaginable - the same experience they provided to their baby.

Posted in: Bodies of woman, 8-month-old son found in car in Gifu See in context

What I find absolutley unbelievable in this community of Japantoday readers who post here and on other similar articles, is how they down vote those who want justice for a 8 MONTH OLD BABY.

I'd love to hear the argument that this woman was not selfish in the killing of an innocent child, a BABY for that matter. Leave the child at a care center? With friends, relatives? Ensure your OWN CHILD is taken care of then feel free to take your own life.

No matter how stressed you are, how much life sucks, how useless your husband is - you have no right whatsoever to take the life of a child who cannot speak for him/herself.

This woman, and others like her in this country went from tragic victim of an oppressive life/relationship whatever, to a useless piece of trash after taking the life of a baby.

@Tony

Its funny you ask that Japan behave with maturity when in fact, China is the biggest BABY of all time. Everytime an article on this issue comes up it just reaffirms that fact.

Just look to the comments that the Chinese government makes regarding the islands. Particularly the ones made by their foreign affairs minister are laughable. Like a stubborn brat who refuses to just acknowledge that the islands are DO NOT belong to China.

"Hurr derr we are just doing survelliance around our soverign territory so we don't know why Japan would scramble jets..."

Also, China considering doing tourism excursions to the islands? Seriously? China constantly having boats around them, survelliance planes... I can go on and on.

I, for one, cannot STAND when people sit down and continuously order directly with the sushi chef and do not take a single item off the conveyor lane.

Why go to a revolving sushi place then? Just go to a standard sushi restaurant!

These people take up the time of the chefs by ordering constantly, thereby preventing the chefs from putting fresh sushi on the conveyor belt at a reasonable pace for the rest of us to enjoy.

@LostinNagoya It's ok, not all of us can foresee emerging trends in design and engineering.

But thanks for coming out and commenting anyway. Also, feel free to give a "funny stare" to the Surface user at Starbucks - they'll gladly reply with a raised middle finger.

@ziohi "Cult of Mac" - nuff said.

Now, while I agree that the start screen is not for everyone - the fact that the functionality of Windows 8 is the exact same as Windows 7, but only faster and with more features and security just underlines the kneejerk reaction of most people to anything different than what they're used to (ala Surface).

This first generation Surface Pro may not take off as anticipated - despite the design, build quality and uniqueness of this device being second to none. That will be saved for the 2nd gen version without a doubt.

Nevertheless, I will import this in a second if theres a way to guarantee Japanese text support on the touch cover.

This is the first true device to seamlessly incorporate the productivity of an ultrabook (no, you cant be productive on an iPad) and content consumption of a tablet - the best of both worlds.

Furthermore, the Surface is a sexy device. Would be a breath of fresh air to be working on this rather than being another me too at Starbucks with a Macbook Air/Pro...

Who cares about why or how the boyfriend didn't notice she was giving birth earlier etc. etc.

And her background? i.e. planned/unplanned, bad parents/upbringing etc. etc. who cares.

She threw her newborn baby out of a window and left it for dead. That should be the only piece of information worth mentioning.

So let's go ahead and (as others here so eloquently put it) put her under the jail or, better yet, drop from a window and leave for dead.

The frequency of cases like this in this country is getting ridiculous.

I dont get all the opposition to putting up gates either.

Let's consider how many of us posting here have stood at the front of the pack behind the yellow line at a train station here in Tokyo (or elsewhere in Japan for that matter) while the train is rolling in.

The last thing on our minds is worry that there is some lunatic (there are many closet lunatics here) behind us who decides that "I just wanted to kill someone" and we happen to be standing in front of him or her. We are usually zoned out in our smartphones or books or what have you.

It's amazing how many Apple fanboys are on this site. They actually take the time to show up to these microsoft articles amd vote down pro MS comments and post links to a few negative reviews out of a sea of mostly positives for the Surface for no reason at all.

Then again, I guess I would troll MS related posts too if I was an apple fanboy too delusional to admit I'm getting tired of using the same old boring iOS since summer of 08 in addition to being just another "me too" on the train with an iPhone.

@ wipeout

That's one way to look at it! (I actually prefer Caribou Coffee to Starbucks back in the States. Like to support the underdog.) I just don't like the sliding doors of Doutor/Excelsior opening up to greet me with the stares of solemn, chain-smoking salarymen and a depressed atmosphere accentuated with a permanent haze of recycled cigarette smoke.

Therefore, I have no choice but to go to Starbucks.

Posted in: Things that foreigners find annoying about life in Japan See in context

A few more came to mind before I retire for today. Let me re-iterate my point in my original post above, I love this country and the countless things it does right! These annoyances of mine are probably just me being me, which is a rant in itself :-)

Masks -- everywhere, all the time. People who are not sick (wearing masks), old people (wearing masks), the couple who came into Starbucks (wearing matching masks), your boss, the annoying girl you work on the same project with (both wearing masks) the train operator, the fresh-out-of-college corporate uniform suit wearing office lady, the old hunched over woman with the purse bag full of 30 pounds of god knows what, the woman carrying (not walking, mind you) her dog (all wearing masks!!). Its turning into a nationwide fetish that no one will own up to or talk about.

Changing channels only to find that every single station, at all times of the day, every day of the week, features a TV studio/back drop that looks like it was designed by a couple of 2-year olds, Willy Wonka and a dude who just snorted crushed Ritalin cut with catnip and all they had to work with was reflective rainbow tape ala the 1980's, pinwheels, a deer head, mickey mouse gloves and a slowly rotating globe/sphere of sorts.

The little chime at the end of every pharmaceutical commercial. Not a brand jingle mind you, but a one or two note chime. You know what I'm talking about. Again, one company did it, so now they all do it.

Beating messages/notices/warnings into your head, constantly, all the time. Case 1: The advertisements on the windows of JR or basically any railway or subway line in the Tokyo metro area that, in small font on the very bottom of the ad, re-iterate, fetishistically, word for word, the standard announcement of "do not use your cell phone in the no cell phone area. Please set to manner mode and refrain from talking on the phone etc.". Why does this need to be written on a window ad in minuscule 6 point font when its announced every stop audibly, written in bold blue letters on a white background on stickers on either side of the door and written on the O-rings themselves (not to mention other places)?

This was mentioned before, but let me take it a step further. Barking and yelling at you to "have a look around" and "please come into the store" even though I'm already in the store shopping (and the only one in the store altogether in some cases). This is why Starbucks employees say "konnichiwa" instead of "irrashaimase". Try this social experiment one day. Within the same day, take a look at the clientele of Doutor or Excelsior Cafe and then go look at the clientele of Starbucks. Night and Day. Positive progression in Japan vs. hanging on to old, outdated and detrimental values.

Cab drivers asking YOU how to get to your destination. You reply, as one would expect "omaka sei shimasu" and then they resort to the air through teeth while they passive aggressively fumble with the GPS.

Posted in: Things that foreigners find annoying about life in Japan See in context

@Ivan Fantastic posts and like others, I completely agree and can relate to the points you brought up.

Lots of thumbs down will be coming my way but that's 'sho ga nai' I guess. Like other long time foreign residents of Japan, let me also say that the positives of living here vastly outweigh the negatives (otherwise we wouldn't still be here). I can make a book about the things i can't stand about living back in the U.S. But, I'm here now, and there are glaring problems with this country that are only getting worse. Let me be on topic though and address the things that really annoy me.

Japan is a country of and run by children (cartoon advertisements, cartoon warning signs, cartoon keep out signs. Hand-built, miraculously designed contraptions that move like a child's toy to ensure that even a brain dead dog could understand the news segment they are trying to explain - to grown adults watching the news no less. You end up making comments about how and who made that paper mache / construction paper contraption instead of what its trying to show you.

Anime which used to feature incredibly unique characters/stories/universes praised by many the world over now replaced with an alarmingly high amount of middle or high school aged guy miraculously living in the same house with five or six, 3-year old looking toddlers with omni-visible panties (possibly robotic) and almost "getting lucky".

Openly sneezing all over you on the train, old men doing that "teeth-sucking/tongue clicking" sound, dudes on my train to work loudly sucking the snot back up into their brain multiple times, over and over instead of blowing it out before boarding the train like a normal person would. The non-use of breath mints and/or the idea that a mask automatically makes your breath smell like Moroccan rose (protip: it doesn't, especially after wearing the thing for a full day)

Japanese TV: Let's feature another segment about the family living in the tiny apartment in tokyo-to taking in a nearly fully grown kangaroo to live with them for a week. Let's not explain the reason why though. Let's feature the kangaroo openly upset and stressed given the situation its in and let's maximize the uncomfort for the viewer. But its OK! Let's make sure to feature the obligatory "walk the kangaroo to the local park and zoom in on the reactions of those seeing a kangaroo being walked around"

Japanese TV - The sequel: Picture in picture of celebrity watching what you are watching, even though not a single Japanese person can explain to you why this is here in the first place (this is how it was, so this is how it should be)? Check. An awesome program like "Before/After" where they show a run-down house being remodeled and the family's joyous reaction at the end? Yes! But make sure you tack in the obligatory "intermission" segment with the "talents" telling you what they thought of the house/the remodel etc. etc. WTF?
