Technology in America is unusually heavily subsidised by government. Silicon Valley was a venture founded by the government and is heavily subsidised by research grants and the military-industry complex.

Posted in: IOC chief Bach slams 'deplorable' government views on Russia See in context

I partially agree with Bach. Why is America and Europe expecting Asia to care about a tiny war in Eastern Europe when there are plenty of wars closer to home?

There is over a million Li out there, it would be a nice help to be a little bit more specific.

Posted in: How do Japan’s subway and trains services compare with those in other countries? See in context

Compared to Seoul the Tokyo railway system is more convenient and has a variety of express trains, more comfortable trains and better train stations. It's much more dense and quicker to get around. Tokyo has has much better English signage.

Seoul has much better buses to compensate for the worse trains though. Seoul is cheaper but public transport is paid for by your employer in Tokyo anyway.

Posted in: Covering over well at Indian temple collapses, killing 35 See in context

Building collapses are common in India because of poor construction and a failure to observe regulations.

I doubt anyone was even thinking about regulations or safety standards at the time of building these things. It's about whether the people have common sense to avoid standing on top of a covered hole.

I would let the guy off with a soft warning and maybe some community service at the most extreme sentence.

Posted in: Chinese authorities take down major site hosting pirated Japan anime See in context

It's not as if the Chinese market does not have a plethora of ways to stream ad-supported free anime anyway.

I was happy with the fact that most of Japan does not have to deal with roach infestations.

It would have been a perfect opportunity for King Charles to tell Macron at the Palace of Versallies to let the French eat brioche.

The Federal Reserve was looking for a recession and it got a great recession! The problem is that inflation is still a problem...

Posted in: Do you think Japan is more politically stable than the United States? See in context

The US has a much more polarised political system, whereas Asian countries are more likely to be headed by a big tent right-leaning party, and European countries are likely to be headed by a grand collation that leans centrist.

Tik Tok should be banned but government needs to apply the security laws to everything else as well.

Posted in: Nowadays many people are drawn to South Korean dramas and fashion due to their high quality. South Korean entertainment has taken full root in Japanese society. See in context

Korean culture is much more Americanised than Japanese culture so it makes sense, but Japanese culture is still much more popular in Japan and very popular in most Asian countries.

Posted in: Asian shares fall on banking turmoil, recession worries See in context

This is already a banking crisis that will become epic. Financial Times has been saying that there is a looming credit crunch, and Bloomberg has been saying that it's pre-Volker inflation versus the Great Recession.

Posted in: What do you think of the way Japanese fans cheer for their teams at baseball and soccer games? See in context

In Europe at least soccer is often associated with lower socioeconomic class and hence they tend to be more likely to have hooligans than other sports. Beyond that Japanese seem normal in terms of sport fans.
