There's an interesting short talk on TED by Jim Fallon about the genetic and environmental factors common to many killers. I hope the police catch this terrible new example.

Balcony designs here aren't kid-safe. Mine looks part of a playground, and gets so dirty from Tokyo's air.

In Japan it's a one horse race really. Wii has nearly 70% of the market, with PS3 around 24%, and Xbox 360 the remainder. (These percentages are constantly changing of course, but asymptotically.)

A bit different in the US (the rest of the world is similar I think) with Wii at 50%, Xbox 360 at 30%, and PS3 with 20%.

@some14some: You mean Mitsubishi Pencil, not Mitsubishi. Different companies.

And their pens (etc) are popular amongst designers, despite the price.

Klein2, that's pretty funny. (sf2k, 5138 is because he doesn't have a 50.)

I get annoyed when for some reason the register doesn't show the right amount if point cards are involved. Then I get confused in addition to the cashier.

Posted in: NZ government to hold line in child smacking ban See in context

Wow bushlover, you seem to have it all worked out. Presumably you can cite references for your claims?

BTW, NZ has a conservative (National) government at the moment, and they aren't going to repeal the legislation. NZ has a serious problem with child abuse that these laws were created to help address.

The "next level" of correction that you mention doesn't have to be violence. Rewarding good behaviour, and time out (to calm down) or ignoring (which attention seeking children hate) for bad behaviour have been studied and found to work well with less risk to the child.

To all: Don't assume you "know" what's right because it's "obvious". The real world is often counter-intuitive.

I don't understand all these people on JT ragging on Arudo Debito. He's honest and his website is informative, and he's trying to improve the lot of foreigners living in Japan by actually, you know, doing stuff. Rather than just whinging on a forum.

From wikipedia: "A 2002 meta-analytic study that combined 60 years of research on corporal punishment, found that the only positive outcome of corporal punishment was immediate compliance; however, corporal punishment was associated with less long-term compliance. Corporal punishment was linked with nine other negative outcomes, including increased rates of aggression, delinquency, mental health problems, problems in relationships with their parents, and likelihood of being physically abused."

Basically there are less risky alternatives, and parents should learn to use them.

Posted in: 'Gayjin' find it tough going in Tohoku See in context

@proxy and Airon:

I said 5 to 100% (the latter in Bononos). Let someone spell it out for you:

"One fundamental premise in social debates has been that homosexuality is unnatural. This premise is wrong. Homosexuality is both common and highly essential in the lives of a number of species". (Petter Boeckman of the Norwegian Natural History Museum, from an article titled "1,500 animal species practice homosexuality".)

Being present in so many animals (with whom we share many biological features) suggests a biological imperative for this behaviour which we share. Final cluestick, definition of natural: "existing in or in conformity with nature or the observable world".

Humans are just another species displaying this normal, natural behaviour.

Posted in: 'Gayjin' find it tough going in Tohoku See in context

Amongst the biggest problems a gay person can have are parents like the above posters.

As the article mentions, "Lots of [Japanese] people think same sex relationships are abnormal", when in fact it is well documented that in all animals studied it is common (5 to 100%) and natural, and therefore normal.

As a parent myself, I'll love my children regardless as long they're good people.

@BobbieWickham

Depends what you mean by problem. Most parents have expectations for their children.

The fact is that around 5% of mammals are born gay, and we have to deal with that.

Posted in: Innocence lost: the dark side of Akihabara See in context

The word "sick" is being used a lot in this thread, mostly describing guys who are attracted to young girls. People should remind themselves that there are sound biological reasons for this attraction. What we now consider a reasonable age of consent in "the West" is a recent phenomenon in evolutionary terms.

Of course kids do need protection, especially before the age of puberty, but these so-called "sick guys" might need protection of their own from the Thought Police.

@insearchofbushido: LOL!

@scoobydoo: Emphasis there on "pretty good". For instance our wounds close as fast as possible to avoid infection, producing undesirable scarring. You can keep that, if you like, or alternatively use science to prevent infection, slow the growth and reduce scarring.

Also, our bodies have evolved to adapt to the demands we place on them, and sitting in an office is not very (physically) demanding.

Posted in: 17-year-old boy drowns while trying to cross river in Saitama See in context

Tragic. I've seen experienced hikers taken for a ride by a river, and they are lucky to be alive. Rivers like this are much more dangerous than a rip at a beach, especially if you don't have a buoyant backpack.

If the bottom is not visible or it's more than knee-deep, it's a potential killer.

@Steen: Yeah, it's not much of a garden. But if you're stuck in Ikebukuro it's nice to be outside and not have the sky mostly hidden by buildings. The beer is Kirin Ichiban, and posters of Ichiro are everywhere.

@Cadmium: It's not sunny in that photo though, and maybe it's after work. In any case Japanese (women especially) probably suffer more problems from lack of sunlight exposure.
