Correction: commute farther to work
-5 ( +0 / -5 )
Possible changes that will occur with the advent of autonomous cars:
-eventual decrease in the number of traffic accidents and deaths
-fewer cars on the road
-repopulation of rural areas as people will be able to commute farther but work in their vehicle, as they would function as portable offices
-parking areas will become unnecessary and the land prices will fall in urban areas because of a rise in supply concurrent with falling populations
-as most of these vehicles will not be running on fossil fuels，emissions from automobiles will decrease
-more green space in cities as more land will become cheaply available.
Interested in seeing if any reaction on the above projections. Some of these changes will take a few decades to occur, but I don't see them not occuring.

Most calls since ambulance service started in 1936? So I guess there were not many ambulances during the war?

"But Japan’s government does not see escaping war as a legitimate reason for claiming asylum,..." Seriously? Can't think of a better reason to move. What are the legitimate reasons, then?

Not sure about Japan, but the cost of the death penalty is higher than life improsonment, as stated in the info below:
"Cases without the death penalty cost $740,000, while cases where the death penalty is sought cost $1.26 million. Maintaining each death row prisoner costs taxpayers $90,000 more per year than a prisoner in general population. There are 714 inmates on California's death row."
...this was just the first result in a search under the criteria "cost of death penalty" on google.co.jp. If there are any points to dispute in the above information I would like to know what they are. So, if the economic argument is invalid, the moral question remains about the death penalty. Though the moral question of whether it is right or not is one that can be strongly disputed on either side, I don't see justifying the death penalty because it's cheaper as being a valid one.

"Are you not able to have children?" Seriously?!?! What scum would say that? That's a terrible thing to say. All people who voted for these people-not-deserving-to-be-called men should take a closer look at who they chose. Seriously, what a bunch of twits!

Terribly sad what she did. As my wife and I have a newborn ourselves, I have read up on post-partum depression and one suggestion for dealing with violent impulses stood out to me, which was that if the mother starts having thoughts of harming the child and no one else is home, she should go to a neighbor and leave the child with the neighbor temporarily, saying something to the effect that she needed a time out. Given the realities present in Japanese culture, I don't see this happening, as I think the mother, as well as the neighbor, would see this as a loss of face, (for and towards the mother), not to mention other factors brought up in other comments, such as the expectation that the mother shoulder all the responsibility of child rearing herself. So I don't know what the mother should do in such a situation. I think everyone should put themselves in a mother's shoes when she is raising a newborn, that being having to feed the baby every three-four hours around the clock, day after day, with no let up. Those suffering extreme fatigue coupled with postpartum depression probably don't have any other recourse than to tough it out. I am hoping there already exists a hotline for mothers in such situations, so that they can call someone to talk to in order to deal with all that they may be feeling during this time. If such a hotline doesn't exist, one should be created.

Anyone know any websites that would give daily updates on air quality levels in Tokyo/Yokohama? Haven't been able to find any...

So if there were another earthquake at M8 or higher in relatively the same area, what would happen at the Fukushima site? Would a tsunami flooding the site trigger an even worse disaster than before? Just wondering what is being done there to prepare for some event like that.

Good luck with that, though the government here will probably politely decline and go it alone, as things have gone so well under their astute leadership.
