Quite a few girls I follow on social media say they have caught it and are pretty upset. Sure, the donations they are asking from followers are a little steep but this is a hard time and we need to dig deep.

This is the state of music today. What went wrong...?

Nothing. For Arashi and Taylor Swift. This is further proof of what we suspected for a long time. The entertainment industry produces product for consumers - not art for an audience. In fact if you saw the Grammys or Oscars this year you would see that the industry in fact hates its consumers. But hey, they keep coming back and emptying their parents wallets.

I've never understood all the invective towards women's football. Personally I've never watched a game of women's football but I feel no need to go online and make rude remarks about the game. Don't like it - grow up and go and find something better to do.

Posted in: Domestic violence cases in Japan reach new all-time high in 2019 See in context

Japan, and a few other modern nations, need a reimagining of what contemporary marriage is. It is still a very important institution and good marriages are happening today. Men though need to understand that they aren't marrying the Boomer women who raised them. Women need to understand that lifetime employment is going the way of the VCR and that Japanese men have become emasculated.

Posted in: Super convenient internet cafes in Japan See in context

When I first went to Japan in the early 2000s, most people didn't have email addresses, laptop computers were only for business and clam-shell phones weren't built for surfing the world-wide-web. Of course my company apartment had no internet access. I found a local internet cafe and was shocked over how great it was! Fast, reliable PCs everywhere, all you can drink coffee and soft drink, even curry and onigiri at 6pm! Private booths, Playstations, karaoke room, shower room (never used but knew where it was in an emergency), thousands of comics I couldn't read, 24 hours a day for about 300 Yen an hour (1000 yen for 5 hours after 10pm!) I remember some weird guy picking up ALL the onigiris for himself one day, angering the guy behind him. The selfish guy dropped the tray of rice balls he had intended to eat by himself, smashing the food all over the floor. Of course, he just looked at the mess and began to walk off. Well, that was to much for the angry customer who missed out. He began screaming at the moron and at the time I couldn't speak Japanese but I wish I could have. The clumsy guy wasn't going to clean the mess, the staff pleading for calm saying they would take care of it. Out of nowhere some other random stands up and cold cocks the clumsy guy. The original angry customer kicks the guy lying in a mess of broken plates, coke and rice. I thought it was quite hilarious. The two angry men then sat down back to what they were doing, the guy on the floor gets up crying and wiping rice off himself and walks out. The little staff girl sweeping up the mess. Back in my smoking days I could light up a cigarette inside and connect with the outside world. Rent a private booth and I could take in my bento and beer and listen to the football.

Posted in: Outbreak, economic ills dim luster of Japan's Olympic year See in context

I believe it was primed by China.

You are being far too kind to the Chinese government here. A virus like this is China's Achilles heel. Perhaps China might have introduced a virus like this into the Philippines and then ordered an invasion as not only a show of dominance but also as a way of testing its resolve in containing a quickly spreading virus. But on its own people?? It is smashing China economically and bringing much of its society to a halt. If this gets worse, it could be China's Black Plague dragging it out of its own Dark Ages.

Where coming from?

Me: Guess.

This is my go to response. Kids and adults love it and it throws the question back on them. It's a harmless enough inquiry, good people like the Japanese are curious about their guests. Some of the answers are hilarious though. Brazil? Finland? Dublin?

Just like the Grammys, the Superbowl and the NBA. When people who have watched it for 40 years turn it on to realise it is not only unrecognisable but now openly agitates against them - they have plenty of other viewing options.

Not saying Japanese husbands are lining up for chores but the fact is that Japanese wives and mothers in-law seem to like things done "their way or no way". Not just mine, this opinion has been agreed upon almost unanimously by both foreign and Japanese men who I know. Throw kids into the mix and she just prefers you stay right out when choosing their clothes, their lunches, their club activities or anything else she might have to justify in front of other mums. For Japanese women to allow their husbands to do more around the house means relinquishing control over their space.
