Cleo - thanks for that. Really helpful information there. Would, save your perspicacious analysis, have escaped my notice.

strongly disagree on one point: there is no "ethos" in japan, the hierarchy takes care of that. but plenty of pathos. oh, so much pathos. pathos everywhere. everyone's tired, crying, kawaisou, gambaru-ing, banzai-ing, or some kind of emotional response to the situation at hand. but agree on the logos point. if aristotle could visit japan today, he would probably wonder how, with all the ships and planes arriving here, truth and logic never managed to board a single one of them.

Posted in: Scottish author's book details efforts to locate sons taken by Japanese wife See in context

douglas, apart from the 9 years your ex-wife has already had to brainwash the boys, there's the 7 or so more before they reach adulthood she has in which to plan her strategy to keep you out of their lives forever. they're going to find life very difficult here if, for example they want to get married and have only a non-resident scot who was absent for most of their lives to present to the prospective father-in-law. you can't give up hope, but you are up against a family, neighbourhood and law enforcement system that will never recognise you as a legitimate parent, and will work actively and in cahoots to keep it that way. japanese women like this want to shit on you, blame you for smelling bad, then spread rumours that you're into scat. so your chances of having any relationship with your kids are, to be realistic about it, pretty thin.

as for the hague convention, anyone who thinks japan signing it will make any difference is living in lala land. i'd bet money that any discussions at government level are mostly spent on finding ways around it. expect to hear lots of "too much time has passed and the child's residence can now be considered japan" type of judgements if it actually does go ahead.

Posted in: Why Japanese girls are a better catch than Japanese men See in context

as long as they see themselves as japanese first and a girl/man second, i doubt any relationship with them is going to have any legs to speak of.

Posted in: Does fluency matter? See in context

fluency in japanese... what is that? when you dream in japanese? when you can hold your end of an argument not only with you wife but with her father too? when you can understand anything and everything being said to you? when you can say anything you want to? when you can talk to kids the way they expect? when you can get past the gaijin-filter at the deriheru? when shop staff irritate you by using incorrect or impolite language? when you not only understand the lie but immediately compensate your own lie to reward the first one? when this doesn't bother you anymore?

in the end, what's the point? seriously. how much time out of your life would you dedicate to mastering the penny farthing? to learning the handloom? to memorising the names of synchronised swimming judges over the centuries? the only people you're going to be communicating with are japanese or foreigners who think they're all that with their ikkyu but can't even pronounce the ri in arigatou properly. and what is it you're going to learn from speaking to the locals? not only do they not want to speak to you, they resent you for making the effort. it's like obama bending down for the emperor. you're just completely missing the point.

Posted in: Why the Japanese have no problem asking about your marital status See in context

to answer your own question: they're just gathering fuel for the fire. tell everyone different ages, different marital statuses, different periods of stay in japan and watch it have not only no negative impact on your standing at the event, but also help protect you when they're preparing the stake. it's harder to burn something when you don't know what it is.

Posted in: Stray parakeet tells Tokyo police where he lives See in context

Actually a budgie (budgerigar) IS a parakeet.

fair enough presto, but it's like reporting that someone's cat is missing when it's really a 600 pound tiger, it's lazy, misleading or oblique reporting. why not use the accepted term instead of a localized misnomer so everyone knows what you're talking about.

nice bird stories, btfw. careful of sharing alcohol with your budgie, though, it's not good for them.

Posted in: Stray parakeet tells Tokyo police where he lives See in context

as butterfly said, that's a budgie not a parakeet. some of them speak really well and can even form their own sentences. whether they understand them is a different matter. probably didn't speak until it got used to the faces of the police.
