Posted in: Nikkei up 44% as FY2023 ends See in context

Is the Nikkei up as much as the yen is down? Seems like a zero sum game.

When the yen depreciates, it benefits Japanese exporting companies. Given Japan's status as an export-oriented nation, a depreciating yen typically causes the Nikkei to rise.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 index was virtually flat at 40,090.78.

The Shanghai Composite index fell 0.2% to 3,040.82.

Nikkei is still above 40,000! With a push for investor-friendly policies, Nikkei is poised to rise in the coming years. In contrast, Chinese stocks are expected to continue falling due to their anti-investor policies. Japan represents a new era, while China is reminiscent of an older Japan.

Nery is a very skilled boxer and has a chance to defeat Inoue. It's not going to be easy for Inoue. However, I still believe Inoue will win, primarily because of his superior speed.

Trump is not for "America First." He is not even for "America Only." He is just "Trump Only." Trump is the egomaniac.

The world, according to him, is divided between "loyalists" and "enemies." Those who are loyal are deemed good, while the ones against him are labeled as evil. He wants to be a king in a democratice nation.

This man is sick, very, very sick.

WTO is one of few international organizations, which actually work. The UN, on the other hand, is largely diysfunctional. It is good to hear that trade rules for services were approved. WTO is still improving. The Rule of Law, under which all parties are constrained and nobody is above the Law, is one of the greatest achievements of human history.

Posted in: Emperor turns 64; mourns Ishikawa quake victims See in context

I think the question really is, of what empire is he the emperor? The Empire of Japan ended almost 80 years ago.

During the 6th and 7th centuries, Japan underwent a slow process of unification, bringing together about 60 small kingdoms under the rule of the Yamato clan. The result was a federation of kingdoms. The title of the Yamato ruler was "The Great King (大王)," while rulers of the subordinate kingdoms were simply called "King (王)." The ruler of the Yamato clan was literally the "emperor" of Japan. The current Japanese monarchy is descended from the rulers of the Yamato clan, hence the title of "emperor."

An honest question - Emperor of what, exactly?

If you are confused with an English translation, try in Japanese "天皇 (Tennō)", meaning "Ruler of Heaven".

Are these rocks any different than the lunar rocks nasa brought back to earth in the 60’s and 70’s?

According to JAXA, their mission "aims to unravel the origins of the Moon through composition analysis of rocks estimated to be derived from the lunar mantle using a “multi band spectral camera. To achieve this, it is essential to land in the vicinity of the targeted crater, enabling precise observations that can only be accomplished through pinpoint landing. "

Posted in: Asian shares mixed after Wall Street gains; Nikkei closes at 34-year high See in context

The trend is that Chinese markets have been down, and Japanese markets have been up. This trend may not change anytime soon.

Japanese cosmetics and pop culture have long been hot items in China—Japanese stocks, less so. The fact that this is beginning to change—Chinese individual investors are piling headlong into Japanese shares as their own market flags—is both a sign of the times and a big hint as to why Japanese stocks are suddenly doing so well in general. Foreign investors who previously parked a lot of cash in China need somewhere else for their international allocations. A lot of Chinese domestic capital is eyeing the exits too: And Japan is cheaper than the U.S. and, potentially, comes with less political and regulatory risk. (Wallstreet Journal)

Gene Hennigh:

This is entertainment news, not a national headline. I personally don't care, but there are those who would read this.

I think I will read the book. I have a very special and warm feeling toward the Presley family. I once worked for Elvis Presley Enterprises, a corporate entity that manages business such as licensing of Elvis-related products!

If you have a chance to visit Memphis, I strongly suggest visiting Graceland and staying at the Heartbreak Hotel across the street. You can see, for example, a famous TV that Elvis shot and a pink Cadillac he drove—a page of American history.
