Posted in: Prime Minister Naoto Kan is facing calls from both within his party and from opposition parties to resign. Do you think his days are numbered? See in context

In such days this country needs a strong leader with a good motivation. People who just seek a chance to get promoted themselves will not succeed. I think Kan will stay on.

Posted in: What do you think about the custom in Japan of women giving chocolates to their male co-workers on Valentine’s Day as a form of “obligation,” and then receiving chocolates back from the men on White D See in context

Looking back at the days, when there were advertisments running like "Today I smoke" ...I think giving and receiving chocolates may be an improvement.

Posted in: Second life begins at 60 See in context

To me it is no wonder that people who are used to work in Japan for 60 years would try what they can to find a job again. But my question is : "Why do so many young people leave Japan? What must be done to make it attractive for them to work in a Japanese company?" Many who got used to work in overseas companies do not want to work in Japanese companies again.

Posted in: Hokkaido schoolgirl commits suicide, blaming bullying See in context

There were very good points mentioned here. I have learned a valuable lesson.Things I did not see in this perspective, but it makes sense. Parents should take the time to talk to their children about basic values, to speak out and fight back, also the suggestion that parents should provide their kids with a place where they could draw back. Maybe that would eleminate one sided "tojikomori". I would like to add one more point. Kids should know that they are precious. I would challenge all the "scientific stuff" about evolution and stick to creation. We need to know that we are made in the image of God.That we are loved by someone greater than our parents and mightier than bullies or even teachers or principals.A real authority.

Posted in: Kumi Koda wins outstanding achievement award for nails See in context

I would like to know, what an achievement it is to invest one's money and time in artificial fingernails.I do not know this person,so I cannot judge her. Yet I think it requires something more than painted fingernails to improve human relationships and encourage desperate people.THIS would be a real achievement in my eyes.

Posted in: How do you feel when someone you are greeting wants to hug you or kiss you on the cheek? When is it appropriate and do you think the custom can be misinterpreted in some cultures, such as Japan, for e See in context

I am a male German and I would feel angry, if someone who is a stranger would try to kiss or hug me(male or female, pretty or ugly is the same). With people I am acquainted with it is different. When we came to Japan, I learned from a Japanese teacher that she even was scared when a male aquaintance just wanted to be polite and help her in her coat after a dinner in a restaurant.

@TheRat The one who only can detect a passion for money and sex is the one who needs to raise his standards. @SiouxChef So the people who experience something that could shatter your world view must be liars in order that you can feel save. I am amazed how ready people are to abandon logical thinking just to save their own philosophy.

Posted in: What is the best way for parents of children of mixed heritage to make sure their kids grow up bilingual? See in context

The problem with the international school that we encountered was that the teachers were very much concerned about Japanese children that had returned from abroad, yet there was not much concern about foreign children in Japan. They had to conform to the Japanese system. There was very little understanding for the situation of our daughter to cope with two different cultures. It seemed the only aim for the teachers was to make all students fitting for the japanese system.

Posted in: Osaka man arrested for employing 50 high school girls as prostitutes See in context

Zenny,as long as you just blame the parents and bad education, nothing will change. You just say :"shikataganai" while this nation is going down the drain? I am not sure if that really is OK.

Posted in: Osaka man arrested for employing 50 high school girls as prostitutes See in context

It is rather cheap to criticize the parents. In a society where everybody is used to conform to the majority from kindergarden on,what influence do parents really have? Of course you have to blame the guy who hired the girls, and to a degree also a society that is far too lenient and has nothing else to offer to young people than designer goods.

Posted in: Osaka man arrested for employing 50 high school girls as prostitutes See in context

If young girls prostitute themselves it is sick. And this situation will not improve just because they get money to buy some stuff they want but do not need. And it will never change unless people stop to call this "normal".

NO,they do not know what they are doing, they are being exploited. It is just sick to sanction this.

Posted in: Mosque talk another hurdle for Democrats See in context

In my opinion, many moslems and non-moslems see mosques as a symbol of dominion and not of peace. To grant that building at that place will only hurt but not heal. Those who really want to have peace between religions should look for a wiser solution.

Posted in: Japan won 5 medals at the Vancouver Winter Olympics. How would you assess the results? See in context

There is too much money in the whole thing. In my eyes the young guy who saved the drunken woman from the train is a real hero and not necessary the sports people who get a gold or silver medal. (Which does not mean that I did not admire their efforts.)But the real heroes do not depend on money.

Great that there are people who have the courage to warn and interact if the warning is not heeded. Let us be thankful that there are such people even here in Japan where it is so easy to blame those who we think should be responsible!
