Posted in: Do you think democracy is the best form of government? See in context

It's the best of all the bad options we've tried so far. We should nominate smart people who don't want power to be in charge though. The more people want power, the less capable of using it for the good of society they seem to be. Just look at Trump in particular. Why did he want power? He was already rich, had a family, was - to some degree - respected among his peers. But there is never enough power for some people. Those are the people who should be denied power. He isn't doing anything for the country, he's only doing things for himself, and he's doing it in a way (executive order, loading the courts, etc) that encourages dictatorship tendencies.

If only there was a running theme in the increase in prices of things, almost like the world is heating up all at once or something, for reasons.

On X you can see that the "shock" was gone days ago. Prices have already dropped.

On X you can find anything you want to find for conclusion shopping, because it's all lies.

I mean it's pretty much only boomer minded genXers on here, it's not really for you unless you're a celebrity with a PR team to do them for you.

Posted in: Record number of Japan ramen eateries went bankrupt in 2024 See in context

People are fine eating cheap Ramen, all the bells and whistles that make it fancy are too expensive for a lot of people. They can get a 6 pack of beer for the difference in price.

Every attempt by the government to shore up the Yen has been laughed off by the international markets.

I'd give them 10 bucks if they did the paperwork for me. Having to do it if your flight lays over there seems a bit draconian though. Guessing we'll be seeing more flyovers and less stopping in the UK.

Pointless comment, why not just admit diplomacy is something most people can't handle.

Posted in: As wildfires rage in Los Angeles, Trump doesn't offer much sympathy. He's casting blame. See in context

Or is this just a random axe-grinding tangent about the libs on your part?

Yeah that's all they do here. There's 3 or 4 of them and I don't know if they are sock puppets or it's just

that nobody will listen to trumpies outside their own echo chambers on american media anymore.

SALT WATER CORRODES PIPES AND IF YOU USE IT TO PUT OUT FIRES IT LEAVES AN ECOLOGICAL DISASTER. Just to put it clearly for slow readers in all caps like Trump talks. Plus you're missing the part where the fire swept through so fast that it was literally burning buildings faster than they could hook a fire hose up.

continues to erroneously cast the U.S. trade deficit

Pls fact check yourself - you can disagree with this "casting", but it is not something you can declare an "error". A trade deficit with a region can be interpreted as a subsidy.

Only if you have a woefully inaccurate and deliberately uninformed view of economic matters. Do you subsidize Wallmart when you get a 50 pack of cookies from there? It's called a purchase. Canada is a large provider of goods and services but they don't require as much stuff in return from the US, because get this: There's less people there.

Posted in: Why are there so many cults in Japan? See in context

TL/DR: People feel lost and afraid and they cling to anyone who can make up something to live for. E.G. how Trump won twice. Charlatans rule the world because good people are too busy being useful to other people to step up and take power.

Posted in: Japan urges U.S. military to make changes to stop rapes in Okinawa See in context

Basically in response to this whole thread:

A. The base is there for the joint defense of Japan and surrounding areas. If you don't know why, move to china. The US could leave, but it's providing a deterrence that Japan frankly just can't do.

B. Nobody is letting anyone get away with anything, they just can't let military personnel be put in local prisons because they will immediately blab military secrets.

C. The rapist will be sent back to the US, dishonorably discharged, be financially ruined and tarred for life, and spend many years in jail.

D. He'll probably then go on to work for the Trump admin? Seems to be their employment pipeline.

With a photo of KJP, I immediately began looking for the lies in the article.

? What's wrong with people, she's the lady who reads prepared statements put out by key scientists. It's not like the trump admin that only aims to put paid actors into positions of power.

Children aside, smoking is gross. Smokers reek and the fumes waft into people's places of business and homes through open windows when the weather is warm. Good on them!

Cities that do this often find themselves making some amount of money initially, before tourists find cheaper places to visit and then they stagnate.

The river is probably pretty fast this time of year and she was swept away before anyone could react. It only takes like 30 seconds to drown sadly. Rip poor girl. Most dogs are pretty useless in an emergency.

Posted in: Japanese firm turning bagworm silk into fiber products in world 1st See in context

Naw, they boil the silk moths alive to extract the silk because if they let them chew their way out it screws up the spool of silk. Although they do often eat them afterwords as a tasty snack.

Never heard of bagworms though, I'm sure they have been a huge pest. But natural production of materials rather than relying on plastic polymers and slave cotton sounds like a huge boon!

Cheaper to skip this whole industry honestly. Direct Electricity is where it's at, the future is already here. Most energy capture is already cheaper than oil and gasoline. And Hydrogen is twice as difficult to store without leaking.

Called it. This was doomed from the start. No other country would have let it happen either, don't fool yourselves. Plus it's not like Japan is bursting with people wanting to be in the steel industry either.
