It's definitely ignorance instead of deliberate thoughtful assessment, gross generalization to be exact. A significant number of the Vietnamese "tourists" are indeed migrant workers contracted by Japanese SMEs to do labor intensive, often hazardous work the average locals shunned. The rest are wealthy businessmen who recently swarmed Japan because of the increasing strategic partnership between the two countries that loosened and encouraged bilateral economic, cultural (and even military) ties similar to that between Japan and other SE Asian countries (i.e., large number of Filipinos in Japan). Try to look beyond the fact that the average Chinese, Vietnamese or Filipinos are on average poorer than Westerners and make ignorant, sweeping generalizations based on ethnocentric prejudices instead of focusing on the contextual nuances of the stats. I am an American expat who has worked in China, VN and S.Korea for the last two decades and can tell you that some of these Vietnamese businessmen often flashed a couple hundreds$ per drinks or sometime thousand$ per dine outing easily for fear of losing "face" with their Japanese partners. This is Asia and you need to learn cultural nuances or be condemned to perpetual whining on JT on how things are so different here and embarrassed yourself.

Based on the majority of Japanese bashing sentiments displayed by anonymous "ghost" supporters of Ghosn, one would surmise that the auto exec was justifiably fearful of Japanese biased, corrupted law enforcement and at the same time leary of French less than democratic justice system but instead prefer Lebanon's superior juris prudence based on Hezbollah's sharia, where life, liberty, peace and prosperity are long cherished than some the less developed backwaters like Japan or France. Just ask any Libannese especially Beirut residents how great their economy is, propped by honest Hezbollah's politicians who are former proteges of the benevolent Syrian leader Assad himself, how the laissez-faire Libanon's a civil code depends on how much Dollars, Euros or riyals/rials (Sunni or Shia seasons of the year) you have. From this perspective, I agree with the anonymous ghost writers herein JT that Ghosn made the right decision fleeing as he will fit right in with the local Libannese politicians and businessmen.

Had Ghosn pulls the same stunt--breaking bail, denouncing the "unjust" system of putting white crime defendant under house arrest instead of in jail with murderers, rapists, pervs,etc.--in the US or Europe, would the reactions been the same?! The same Ghosn proponents are the same people who whined about the Wall Street fat cats who enriched themselves with billion$ and get away with it after causing the Great Recession and global financial crisis ten years ago. I agree that Japanese legal system gives a preponderance of leeway to prosecution but each country has its own judicial preference. The majority of Japanese supports the tough law and order approach so that a woman can walk around after midnight no problem, the national homicide rate is less than that of a medium size city in the West, annual gun violence less than the number of fingers on my hand, trash free streets, etc. Come and experience the country before making prejudicial generalizations. Regardless, when you're a guest in any country, you must abide and respect that country customs and law, period!
