@sunfunbun

That’s a big assumption you’re making. But just assuming it’s true, she could equally have thought that this is something hat she started and therefore something she should finish, at least for her teammates. As I wrote above, it’s an odd time to call it quits, especially because there are literally dozens of people who would give their left arm to be in her shoes. Rather than gaining perspective, it sounds like she has lost it.

@TokyoJoe

I think it’s a combination of factors. Obsessions with safety and social media presence seem to be the most prominent.

She could have decided this before the olympics and given a chance to someone else.

China has struggled with itself throughout history. Only autocracy can maintain keep a grip on the reins of power. Xi understands this and has therefore made himself emperor for life.

Posted in: The 10 best places for young, single people to live in and around Tokyo See in context

There are tons of great places to live in Tokyo. These are only the famous ones. I lived in Togoshi Ginza once. Probably my favorite. Kanda is maybe my second.

I’m surprised ShimoKitazawa isn’t on the list. Maybe too overrun with hipsters now.

Posted in: Hosoda: Japanese anime has problem with women and girls See in context

I always thought much of Miyazaki’s work was about the environment. Sure, there’s lots of young female characters, but they’re all unique not at all hardly weak.

I think you can read what you want into much of Miyazaki’s work, but Hosoda would do better criticizing other anime tropes than Miyazaki’s work. I guess he’s playing to internet divisiveness.

Posted in: Richardson will miss Olympic 100 after marijuana test See in context

Hopefully, it might be enough to push the powers that be to consider removing cannabis from the list of banned substances.

The point is that she knew it was wrong. She has owned up and apologized. Stop making the issue about how marijuana is “harmless.” Whatever the rules are, they need to be followed by everyone. She has clearly understood the lesson here. Why can’t you?

I always find it funny that people like to complain after the fact. Not before.

Hard to believe the fake outrage. Olympic athletes have been suspended before over this.

Huh? When did it stop being synchronized swimming? I guess I’m oit of it. My ex girlfriend was a synchronized swimmer and, no joking, a serious athlete. Doing all that stuff while holding your breath takes incredible lung capacity. But I digress.

*It is harmless,  *

This is the weed-lover’s mantra. That was before people started actually researching the stuff.

There is growing evidence that it isn’t.

I’m all for renewables, but let’s be realistic. They aren’t reliable due to weather etc, and to compensate you need huge batteries, the manufacturing of which is awful for the environment. Nuclear can provide a stable, relatively clean supply of carbon-free power that can be supplemented by renewables.

Misleading title.

The first couple of athletes are only 50% in their support. I also read Nadal in another article saying that he "understands" but it's also part of the job.

I agree with @donburi. This is silly. I'd sit through any number of press conferences for 55 million.

Yes, I would.

Posted in: Even more questions for Osaka when she returns See in context

Kit gloves for the kid.

Seriously, how many athletes have been through the media gauntlet now? Thousands? Why is it the first time we’re hearing about mental issues being caused by press conferences? And she’s been a media darling since the beginning. Don’t like repetitive questions? That’s half of humanity! Don’t like to think about your short-comings? Again, just like everyone else.

The thing is, with her activist approach to social media it just comes across as more of an “I’m special” thing than a mental issues thing. She may be depressed, but then how did it come to this? She says it’s been going on for years?

She’s playing sports and making millions. If this makes her depressed, then maybe she needs to spend less time thinking about how bad she has it and more on how lucky she really is. Seriously. First world problems.

I’m skeptical.
