I think the Equality, Health Care Insurance, and smarter use of military force have changed the USA for the better. Standing with science re: Climate Change is a good thing. And the return to strong diplomacy is welcome.

I prefer Sharp's Smart TVs to those from their competitors … the fourth color gun is why. What is needed is tax credits from the Japanese government to help Sharp, Panasonic, Sony, and Toshiba to do the R&D they need to be ahead of those firms that don't. Because I'm fairly certain LG and Samsung have strong government support. That is hard to compete against.
I - for one - want to see "glasses-free" 3D TV from Toshiba.
As to those who are making enough, their company will loan them the cash/credits to buy. I would, it might the difference needed to keep my employer going.

I'd like to think I understand some of the culture and am willing not to be a burden. Or a pain.

Japan acts tough. It's imbeciles that make real pain sufferers look bad. I'm unamused by the two faced attitude though, as Japanese executives - I worked with - expected me to find drugs for them. Whereas, I've left housing in Tokyo where other foreign guests were smoking chronic.
Bet Julie's dad gets hired by Rush Limbaugh though. She gave her fellow ladies and foreigners a big black eye.

Posted in: Hundreds protest in California ahead of Abe's visit See in context
These issues have been addressed, but left victims disgraced. There was an agreement which tried to fix that. Then South Korean politicians found they could play political gamesmanship by attacking Japan but never helping the victims. As they'll be fewer living survivors soon - the new tactic are "comfort women" statues and renaming the Japan Sea.
Japanese bureaucratic geniuses didn't help by whitewashing their national history books. The Emperor has called them on it.
North Korea and China are using similar tactics for political gain.
Staging protests won't accomplish the simple task of helping the victims, which Japan gave South Korea funds to do many years ago. Maybe PM Abe should mention that along with his apology about this issue.
Any new funds should go into an UN program to prevent future child victims in South East Asia like in Myramar which there's fighting that's being ignored.

Posted in: Japan's view of WWII history rankles some U.S. veterans See in context
It's politicians and bureaucrats that are screwing up here. My Japanese wife's understanding of WW2 is very skewed. She thinks the American version of events are inaccurate. I love her regardless. My 92 year old dad is a WW2 vet of the Pacific theater, plus my 96 year uncle was one of the first U.S. Army doctors on the ground in Hiroshima after the war ended and he treated everyone from grannies to kids.
I was taught the A-bombs stopped a further division of Japan between the U.S. and our then Soviet allies, it still works as a useful myth. What mattered more was 20 odd years later Japan was America's unsinkable Aircraft Carrier.
What's wanted is recognition that Imperialists caused harm. No one thinks today's Japanese Government wants its revival.

Let's embrace the truth here.
We can clear the air.
We can't hide that Military Imperialist usurpers robbed women of their dignity regardless of nationality. We all must acknowledge those monsters are long out of power. Politicians should stop trying to promote this hate 70 years later for their personal gain.
We did great harm ourselves trying to prevent worst terrors. It was war and errors were made.
This woman deserves her dignity back. Abe can apologize to her. That's a good first step.

Dumping on the parent is misplaced anger. Kids with both parents are also hurt by inhuman bullying. I've seen teachers bully as well. Children have to be safe in school and at home from harm.

To paraphrase Voltaire, I disagree with what you said — but I will defend your right to say it with my life.
I found Charlie Hebro offensive. However, they offended the phonies and extremists more. And there are extremists hiding under every faith. We need to keep the extremists off balance and disrespected.
We savvy International readers can respect an opinion we disagree with. Miyazaki is very consistent in his. Bless him and may he surprise us with many more years of animated goodness.

Thanks Chopchop!
Baby hatches are good. Alert parents and teachers would be a help.
The other party to the dead infant's brief existence might not know. The girl herself was clueless. Which suggests a way forward.
While I'm sad the baby is dead, perhaps instead of prison, this young teen could talk to other equally vulnerable girls her age. That may prevent some from not using protection of they're going to be active; And, get those pregnant to a place they have some prenatal care.

I think any one wanting to go to Syria needs to be schooled on the dangers. Not when there are no good guys. Rebels sold the position of one of the U.S. reporter out.
Idiots wanting to go and fight need deprogramming. This is nothing new, children of Romantics would run off to war only to be on the wrong side and killed. Usually brutally.
So I agree with the Government in this situation.
