Posted in: How do you think the taste of Japanese rice compares with rice produced in other countries? See in context

California grown rice and Japanese grown rice tastes exactly the same to me.

When I served Calrose Rice to my visiting family or friends from Japan, they often expressed surprise that they tasted so similar.

The big difference, of course, was that California rice was less than half the price.

In all honesty, I respect farmers, people who take care of cows and make things than I do prefectural workers.

Posted in: Candidate for mayor of violent city in Mexico killed as she began campaigning See in context

At least 14 candidates have been killed since the start of 2024.

Jesus that's insane. Mexico was a much mellower and laidback country back in the 70s and 80s when I used to go there a lot. Even more so in the 60s and 50s when my older relatives used to go.

Corruption has always existed there but these violent, gory and numerous executions and killings is something more akin to the last twenty years.

I remember a decade ago a man or a woman in a wheelchair was denied membership to Konami or Joyfit health club because the staff claimed they couldn't guarantee they'd be able to help him or her if they needed extra assistance.

I wonder if that case had anything to do with this broader and more inclusive law.

A few of my Japanese students, after coming back from overseas, mention how cheap and easy it was to use Uber or Lyft.

They often question as to why we don't have them here.

They're always shocked to find out Uber actually was here over a decade ago but was pushed out by the govt and the taxi association.

Once again the govt is maintaining the status quo at the expense of the public.

*...after the long, lean years of deflation, when prices, wages and the cost of money changed little*

I have to disagree with assertion. Prices have gone up considerably these past ten years.

This company should've been shut down when the kiddy fiddling scandal related to this pedophile factory broke out in the late 90s.

I blame the media, police and lawmakers for not pursuing and putting an end to them.

Sakakibara the name of the Kobe killer of 1997 too. Since he was a minor at the time, he has already been released from custody and is rumored to be living in Ehime. I wonder if it's the same guy.

My small city also closed its last movie theater fourteen years ago. It sucks not having at least one theater to watch a movie on a big screen. I hope it works out for Wada and Matsuda.

Posted in: How much attention do you pay to information, such as calorie count, on food labels or menu items in restaurants? See in context

Not at all. I basically know what is or isn't high calorie but I don't need to know exactly how much.

I eat moderate portion with vegetables first, proteins and fat next, and then carbs and sugar (if any).

Eat a couple or once a day and that helps keep me in pretty good shape.

The re-militarization of Japan. Good for local municipilaties if many military service personnel move into the areas like they do around bases in the US. Could help stave off countryside depopulation.

They may need to x out the "SD" in JSDF in the near future. Also, start renegotiating with the US to start lowering their US military support $ a bit since Japan is starting to pay a tad more for their own self-defense.

So where are you on Trevor Bauer? He said he was innocent (was later found innocent) and he was immediately kicked off the team. Hypocrite much?

No way! If they're going to overbook and then have to kick people off but give them big money compensation tickets or what not, they're losing money anyway.

They just shouldn't overbook and save themselves money and save the paying customers the hassle of being bumped around and delayed.

It's a headache for everyone, including the workers who have to announce and deal w/ irate passengers.

I like the combination. I like being able to see all the different kinds of sushi available and sometimes get the urge to just grab something I've never tried. It's also nice to be able to order something from the touch screen pad and get it right away.

Another chain doesn't have the rotating belt and has a straight belt that goes directly to your table/counter seat. It's fine and fast but it always feels like something's missing without the rotating conveyer belt with all the different colorful sushi going around.

I hope they keep both options available.

Personally, I don't have a problem with someone smoking outside as long as there's a little distance between us.

It's good they're coming down harder on second-hand tobacco smoke, but I wish they'd lighten up on marijuana persecution and regulations.

I was watching the news about this specific product and incident when a commercial for Kobayashi's beni-koji red yeast rice came on a minute later.

I orginally thought it was a warning but upon watching it really carefully, they were advertising it! Someone from the company should have contacted all the advertisers and cancelled these commercials stat.

The woman’s boss contacted police at around 4 p.m. on Sunday after becoming concerned when she failed to show up for work.

Did anyone find it odd that the boss would contact the police for just missing one day of work? I understand if it were a few days but just one day seems a bit extreme for contacting the police.

...smaller and medium-sized firms, which account for a whopping 99.7% of all enterprises and about 70% of the country's workforce.

This pretty much sums up that there is no "wage bonanza" aside from the .3% large corporations.

Trickle down theory economics doesn't work and the sooner this government realizes this the better.
