Posted in: Japan voted Best Country in world for 2nd year in a row in Conde Nast Traveler poll See in context

Now this is an interesting phenomenon.

Presumably, the majority of the commenters here are expats living in Japan.

YET, there are a good number of usual suspects here who feel compelled to down-vote, diminish or decry any achievement of, or accolade received by, Japan.

Their usual refrain being along the lines of, “so what? other countries have done that” or “those people praising Japan don’t know the Real Japan like I do, it really sucks (is unfair; is racist; is misogynistic; is too oyaji driven; is clueless; is unfriendly; is apathetic; etc., etc .”

It begs the question:  You have chosen to live here (none of the usual suspects are enslaved, I think it’s safe to assume), so if Japan makes you SO unhappy that you must come to this site every day to whine about “lousy Japan,” why do you remain here?  Why not go to your ideal country or, if there is no such thing, at least to any country that you hate less ??

That's good. It seems the J gov has learned from their poor and too late handling of the evac from Afghanistan.

Same pitchers, ALL ball parks are different, rules are the same, inter league play means nothing. The game of baseball is the same in NL or AL, it's literally incredulous that anyone would even suggest there is a difference in the game!

Ok, that's just dandy.

You've well illustrated to everyone here the old adage, "You can take a horse to water, but you cannot make it drink."

Huh? Do you forget that the national league has the DH now?

Golly gee, do I have to spell it out for you?

Of the total games that an MLB team plays in a season, only 28% are interleague games.

The other 72% are played against teams in its own league (either American or National).

HENCE, the pitchers, the stadiums etc. that a National League hitter faces in the aggregate over the season can be considered to be quite different from that which an American league hitter faces.

To those of you who seem so strangely intent on downplaying Ohtani's achievement or great ability, please enlighten the rest of us as to your motivation and purpose in doing so.

A means of assuaging your own lack of self esteem?

A dislike of any praise related to Japan?

Just a contrarian by nature ?

Look, with the 50/50 and more, this guy has achieved what no one else has in the Entire history of the game.

By whose definition? The Japanese media? There is this guy named Aaron Judge who is in fact doing statistically better than Otani this year. But then the articles written here do show quite a bit of bias.

Bringing Judge into the equation is simply off the mark (off base, if you will).

Anybody who knows anything about baseball knows that a direct comparison of stats cannot be made across the American and National leagues. Different sets of pitchers, stadiums, etc. that the batters face.

Rather generous of Japan after Indonesia's surprising flip-flop on their rapid transit some years ago.

Predicting earthquakes is an inexact science.

So true. The "70% ~ 80% likelihood within 30 years" really is next to nothing to go by.
