I had a neighbor who was putting out rat poison for the cats
I hope he got a substantial and well publicised prison sentence. He was not only putting out poison for cats and dogs, but for young children playing outdoors too.

@USNinJapan2
I have adopted a cat once from the SPCA but no, I do not feed or take in stray cats no matter how cute they may be or have any desire to have anything to do with them.
I guess that was one happy kitty you had there. Congrats on your generosity and 'the good deed'.

if you really care about that poor starving stray cat that you feed, take it in, give it a home and have it neutered. Oh, and do the same for the next stray that shows up, and the next, and the next...
Well actually friend, that is what I did do, three times in ten years.
As you are so full of good advice for others, how about you mister?

People, feeding stray cats does not equal kindness to animals.
Actually feeding a starving cat IS undoubtedly an act of kindness to the individual animal, whatever your views are of the social consequences. As others comment, cats do actually serve a useful function in terms of discouraging rodents (and, in the country, snakes!)
I feed starving cats when one turns up. Hope the guy has a long, healthy and well nourished life ahead of him to give him an opportunity to learn some compassion for others.

But, he added, “this is the war we’re in.”
That's the crux of it. If it is a really a war and the Americans believe that it is essential to fight then they have to commit everything they have got and be prepared for the tens of thousands of casualties. Don't expect the Europeans or Japanese to help you, for us the political will is not there.
Otherwise, just go home. Or it will just go on like this for decades.

Um .. maybe I'm missing something but isn't this whole event next year just one form of saying 'sorry, please can we move on from all that'.
Also more than one American friend of mine staying with my in-laws in Hiroshima (my father-in-law is hibakusha) has felt the impulse to say "I feel really sorry about what happened here".
If you don't regret what happened here's an idea. Get the 'shink' down to Hiroshima, head over to the Peace Park yourself and explain to some visiting classes of elementary school kids why you think it was all a good idea and so necessary. You'll be helping them out with their class project and communicating your point of view.

This is so much worse than, say jumping on the tracks himself.
Not really. The train would have been delayed longer while the police completed their 'scene of fatality' reports.
Teenager pranks - happens all the time all around the world (but not often in Japan!). But a guy in his 50's - really unusual.

Usually you would be OK between the rails if you like down flat, there is usually 30-40 cm clearance but you can't rely on it.
Safest if you fall and there is time is to lie in the centre beween the two sets of tracks, there is always safety clearance there
