It was a good move. Obama is a skilled leader.

Posted in: Man arrested for refusing to pay taxi fare from Kyoto to Tokyo police HQ See in context

Only seven man yen? It would almost be cheaper to take a taxi for three than take the 'shink'.

The man was judged by the laws of the country as he should have been.

Extra-territoriality is a thing of the past.

I'm sure socialists everywhere support Obama

You may not have heard but actually France and Germany both have Conservative administrations. I guess folks like may Obama simply because he's a talented leader.

The image of the United States has improved markedly in most parts of the world

It could hardly have gotten any worse

Posted in: LDP warns voters against change in Aug 30 election See in context

the lawmakers acknowledged that the Liberal Democrats have squandered their public support, and must make a new start.

Absolutely correct. So they must. During the long spell they will now have in opposition.

By the way. Shouldn't you be referring to these people as 'former lawmakers' now, or 'candidates'? Now that the Diet has risen they are no longer in a law-making role and once the voters are done many will no longer have a career in politics.

They’re also less likely to fit the traditional 9-to-5 work mode

Not sure that there is much 'traditional' about that 'mode' here in Japan!

@flatearther

No matter what the kids were or weren't doing, it's still the driver's responsibility, legally

Actually this is untrue, even in Japan. There are limits to the assumption of strict liability.

Posted in: Asia Olympic Council backs Tokyo's 2016 bid See in context

“Asia will always support any city from Asia”

What an amazingly dumb thing to say. Blows apart any pretense of impartiality and ensures that everyone else will vote for the local candidate too. That should clinch it for Brazil.

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to enjoy these fried treats without continually having to worry about the possible dangers to one’s health?

There is such a way. You just ignore them.

@King

Also online english service is not really something japanese need in a japanese speaking country.

it is something non-Japanese customers who need to access their accounts from computers with non-Japanese keyboards appreciate though.

Thank you Citibank for having the imagination to provide a service for ALL your customers.

Posted in: Agency slaps Citibank Japan with sales suspension See in context

Basically the Japanese don't like foreign competition working in Japan.

Citibank offer a much more user friendly banking service to me than my local Japanese bank does. Also an on-line service that is actually available in English.

Even Aso, who I would blame for a lot, can't help his family background.

It might help to treat the issue with some sensitivity though.

As long as the govt doesnt freak out in Japan and elsewhere all will be well.

I predict that as soon as the election is called the LDP will have the little men in masks and white suits boarding inbound aircraft at Narita again.

Why have a circus when you can have politicians?

Posted in: Woman falls to death from 2,400-meter mountain ridge See in context

Not to be morbid, but I wonder how long it would take to fall 2,400m.

based on g=9.8 m/s2 about 22 seconds in a vaccuum but I doubt you would make faster than 50 metres per second in the lower atmostphere so around 40 seconds I would guess
