Gimme a break. I pray I'm never brought before a jury in this country.

This juror should be given the flick.

Posted in: Tens of thousands cheer emperor's 20th year on throne See in context

Japan was built on the lives sacrificed in the past? The emperor himself has a slightly twisted view of history too it seems. Japan's enormous death toll was due to its own fanatical war-mongering. It was the efforts of those who rebuilt from the ashes that gave rise to "modern" Japan.

Posted in: Japan catches 59 whales off Kushiro See in context

A few years ago Japan admitted exceeding their bluefin tuna catch quota by 120,000 tonnes, though experts suggest it was a lot more. So one whale under the limit? I7d call that a slap in the face.

Posted in: Pregnant actress Megumi Okina to marry 'ordinary' businessman See in context

I guess the subtext really is simply: Famous woman marries someone she likes.

I mean, it could be that. I may well be wrong.

By why would you marry someone ordinary unless you actually liked them?

Think about it. Till next time.

Is this really the fault of the doctor? Or is it just a beat-up?

I can easily imagine this being said in a light-hearted/ironic/sarcastic way as a throwaway line.

DO people really believe this guy thinks we should try to reduce life-expectancy in Japan?

Come on! Light(en) up!

It most definately IS a firing offence.

What else does this jerk get up to in his professional duties is the question you have to ask.

He has been caught out as a person UNFIT in the role of teacher.

And quite frankly no, I don't think it would be that hard to replace him.

The T-shirt is no different to any other inane English T shirts you see. There is ZERO reference to the charity target on the shirt and why the hell wasn't the text written in Japanese?

Her shoelaces are undone. That is sending a dangerous message to the young people.

It also appears her character is based on someone from a Dicken's novel. Has she been working in a coal-mine or something?

Hey, if he's a criminal, or a member of an "illegal syndicate", they can just arrest him when he goes to pick up his check.

This kind of issue reminds me of the whole whaling for research issue.

The Japanese tie themselves in knots because...well...because they're Japanese.

I think the judge is right in a way. Better to have the identity released formally rather than have rumours and inuendo floating about. The reason he lifted the suppression was that his identity had already been leaked.

I agree mrsynik. The guy has questions to answer, and the lynchmob are wrong in seeking vengence before justice.

It's understandable that people get caught up in the emotions, but it's also easy to imagine that those most vocal in calling for his torture etc probably haven't suffered any personal loss at all - just bogans.

I think you've answered your own question : "Crazy".

But then again - could've been kids not knowing what they were getting into. When I was a kid, me and a mate were setting fire to grass tussocks for fun and found ourselves battling to contain a grass fire that threatened to hit the bush. Then there's that Michelle Shocked song. By the way, we did contain the fire in the end!

Posted in: Megumi Yasu serves as poster girl for female firefighter recruitment drive See in context

It says a lot about the Japanese male psyche that they might be more drawn to a lego-land figure than to the macho image of doing battle with the elements to save property, life and limb. Yeah, I know - we don't need another hero. And BTW I have worked with many a female fire-fighter and let me assure readers that (ready for the cringe?) they can do just as good a job as any bloke!

Good luck to them. It looks like a much cleaner enterprise than other oil prospection operations.

Posted in: Japan rejects IWC proposal to halt research whaling See in context

The pragmatic move idea is a good one.

Another option might be for every nation to take up whaling and thereby

a) Forcing the national quotas down to about 10 whales per nation

b) Removing the "let's preserve the unique japanese traditions"/ don't tell us what we can't do incentive.
