Posted in: 2 men jump to deaths from train platform in Tokyo See in context

In the early 90's there was a triple suicide of businessmen in the western Tokyo suburb of Kunitachi. A business deal had gone bad leaving the three of them bankrupt. They each rented a room in a hotel and hung themselves. Can you imagine what the poor housekeeper thought when one body was found, only to find another in the next room, and then another in the next?

There is no reason that display fireworks can't be placed back into storage magazines and used again for other shows.

Hamas showed its level of concern for the wellbeing of Gaza residents when it spent several hundred million dollars building terror tunnels instead of using that money to improve civilian infrastructure or facilities.

Posted in: The hotel market is very strong at the moment. As Japan's economy attracts more attention, more developments in central Tokyo are to take place. That will create more and more new hotels and put Tokyo See in context

The large Japanese hotel chains need to make it easier for travelling families to find rooms. Many of the online reservation systems won't allow the booking of a room for two adults and two children.

Posted in: Is smoking pot harmless? See in context

I feel sorry for kids who have parents who regularly smoke marijuana and then just tune their kids out. It is as bad as alcohol in those cases, and seem to be increasing with the growing acceptance of marijuana.

Posted in: Battle of the burgers: McDonald's Japan See in context

The obsession of the McDonalds haters never ceases to amaze. Their observations about McDonalds suggest that they go there fairly often for people who supposedly hate the place. I find it to be exactly what it presents itself to be - a convenient, clean place to get an inexpensive meal or snack without any surprises.

Assange is a creepy narcissist who wants to get back into the limelight. So desperate and now only the lunatic fringe supports him after the revelations of his manipulative personality and the corruption of Wikileaks.

We are just lucky it's not mainland USA otherwise he would have had access to semi automatic weapons and probably killed a lot more.

Actually, the ATF website lists 16 active Federal firearm licensees in Guam, including at least that have the required license (dealer, manufacturer, or importer) to deal in firearms:

Posted in: How come soccer has never reached the popularity of baseball, basketball or the NFL in the U.S.? See in context

Soccer is a fall sport in most school districts in the U.S.. So the teams have to compete with other fall sports like American football, swimming and cross country for athletes and that reduces greatly the number of kids who would otherwise continue playing after grade school.

Posted in: U.S. tax filing deadline just around the corner for Americans living in Japan See in context

The important thing is to declare bank accounts on a Form 8938 with your tax return if the balance reaches the reporting threshold. The bank account itself may not require payment of taxes, but the failure to report the account could lead to severe penalties. Japanese banks will be reporting account information to U.S. tax authorities so there is no chance that you can just ignore the requirement and hope it goes away.

Posted in: Standing on the job gains favor in U.S. workplaces See in context

I worked for a company that offered desks that could be elevated with a simple hand-operated crank system. It was so easy to raise the desk up and stand and then lower it when desired. Most people in the office took the opportunity to stand, at least occasionally. I don't know why it isn't more commonplace.

The only 2 countries that have an extraterritorial tax system requiring non-residents to report foreign income

That's not quite true, as appealing as it must be to make the extreme juxtaposition. Try explaining to the Canada Revenue Agency that you didn't think you were required to pay taxes simply because you live and work abroad.

Posted in: What do you think of the nicknames that sports teams use? For example, in the U.S., the NFL's Washington Redskins are under pressure to change their moniker because it is now seen as being disrespectf See in context

The unintended consequence of the politically correct (yes, well-intentioned white folks continue to crusade against Native American names and imagery even in the face of indigenous tribal calls for maintaining the status quo) is that today's high school students are supporting teams with exclusively Caucasian names - including the Vikings, the Saxons, the Celts, and the hilariously named Beverly Hills High Normans.

What is required now, apparently, is a court-ordered definition of" insanity" to stop people from buying guns.

This has been defined. See Question 11f on the ATF Form 4473 used to record over the counter gun transactions and the instructions for 11f included on the form:

Posted in: Colbert to succeed Letterman See in context

Colbert is just not that funny. His humor is based on his viewers wanting to think that the views they hold are superior to those he mocks, especially the lower-class less sophisticated. There is not an iota of self-deprecation. Does anyone really laugh at his "jokes"? I predict CBS will be looking for new host within 2 years.

Posted in: Sony 4K commercial is so dazzling, the scenes almost look fake See in context

I don't think higher resolution necessarily makes for a better experience for the viewer. For example, I just watched the Godfather series on Blu-Ray and found that the clarity made it clear that the scenes were filmed on sound stages. The clarity made the suspension of disbelief too difficult to get absorbed in the story.

Posted in: Spring in Japan: beautiful blossoms and hay fever misery See in context

The only way I've found to get relief from bad hay fever in places like Tokyo is three pronged - one is an oral antihistamine like Allegra (generic Fexofenadine), a nasal spray like Flonase (generic Fluticasone), and antihistamine eye drops like Opcon-A. With those in action, you can enjoy life during this beautiful season.

Colbert's biggest transgression is being unfunny. If Snyder had named a foundation with the Redskins name, then Colbert might have had something. Instead he couldn't resist the urge to Twitter out despite the lack of a point to the "humor".

I suppose that the purported hijackers wouldn't be able to put the plane back in the air as the engines would begin pinging again.

They may not care about the engines pinging once they load whatever they have onto the plane and force a country to either shoot down the airplane or deal with an even more unimaginable horror.
