Don't be surprised when you hear "gun shot" from the other side. It's just fireworks.

Kizaki said the exercises—which run through Feb 3—are not directed at any particular threat, but contribute to Japan’s overall ability to deter an attack and defend its territory.

On Chinese New Year's Eve. That is interesting.

Dunkerley, who holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the London School of Business and a Master’s degree in Aeronautics from the Crane Institute of Technology in 1985

What? I mean Aeronautics is difficult enough for a engineering student, never mention a guy from business school. I got my Master’s degree in Aircraft Design last year. Let me tell you, IT IS NOT EASY. That guy must be a genius.

Any people who hates China Should support Communist, and vice versa.

Thanks, these are exactly the words I have been looking for.

So the question is : will he get purged, or is change actually possible

Let's hope Wen won't end up like Zhao ziyang in 1989.

Posted in: China holding 4 Japanese for illegally filming military targets See in context

My sense, and I could be wrong, is that this may have been something not sanctioned by the national government - a local official or agency acting on its own, based on the steady stream of nationalist rhetoric fed by the state controlled media to the public.

No news about these four arrested Japanese in major Chinese media so far. It seems to me the local government wanted to kiss central government's ass by arresting these four, but central government don't appreciate it. They (central government) just want some diversions and make some noises to keep people's attention away from political reform we care most about back home in China. No one (except those extreme nationalists) believe CCP really care about the poor fisherman or that tiny rock, it is just being used by some air-head selfish old-timers in CCP to stay in power.

My Chinese is a little rusty but I think the kanji on his vest says "Undercover Agitator from the Chinese Government Ministry of State Security".......

about the vest on the left “釣魚台是我們的” diaoyutai is ours on the right “保衛釣魚台” Defend diaoyutai. in the background “兩岸合作” literary means "two shores corporation" two shores mean taiwan and China here. "美日條約" deal between US and Japan. I can't see other words, but I guess it says "we don't admit that". “釋放賠償”release and compensation. it's interesting that China only ask for "release" but taiwan ask for "relase and compensation".

This is one of the most dangerous men on the planet. There is no way I would let him get close enough to bite my child and that is what it looks like he is about to do.

You guys really know nothing about Wen Jiabao. If CCP ever reform politically under huge request by Chinese people, it will be made possible by men like Wen. You do know he was with students on Tiananmen 1989, right ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzJiPFMWnEA (Wen 1989) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUpcQSJ0tTE&feature=PlayList&p=92097DC32484A6D1&playnext_from=PL&playnext=1&index=20 (CNN interview)

Ugh can't believe that Chinese official used the phrase "great leap forward”. Mao's Great Leap Forward which collectivized farming resulted in the deaths of 40-60 million Chinese!

Same translation in English doesn't mean same Chinese phrases. I haven't seen/heard Mao's Great Leap Forward (DaYueJin) in official occasions for many years.

And why everything has to be political?

I work at a major university in China and it is not my experience that the students know much about getting roung the censors. The vast majority don't even know what a proxy is let alone use one. Actually they don't care to widen their horizens and are content to chat (QQ) , play games and surf the Chinese sites like Baidu. Wikipedia is about as far as they go and that's a rarity.

I studyed at a major university in China, and it is common sense that one should set up a proxy before he complains some thing on Campus BBS.

China has a dreadful record on human and political rights. Just ask any Uyghur, Tibetan or other minority group in China.

You know what, in China, Minorities has priorities over Han Chinese. If one Minority Chinese marry one Han Chinese, they will definitely have their Children registered as Minorities, because Minorities have better chance to go to a better univeristy, can have more than one Child (Most Han Chinese Families are only allowed to have on child) and many other priorities.

Their military have countless weapons pointed at Taiwan who are an independent country held hostage by military threat.

I really don't want to start on this one, just please read more and talk to some taiwan friends if you have one.

or 2. China finds a path to greater democracy and freedom for her people resulting in rising disconnections between the wealthy areas and areas that are still essentially Maoist hold overs. Unrest and growing desire by minority regions to separate will again drive China's attentions inward.

We will see on this one

Then you can add in the many nationalist and ethnic movements that threaten to fracture China if and when she opens her political world to be more democratic.

Are you suggesting China should not open her political world to be more democratic?

Posted in: Bush says not attending Olympic opening ceremony would be 'affront' to Chinese people See in context

As a chinese, I don't consider myselfe a 100% supporter of CCP, but a 100% supporter of China, just like most of u guys hate bush but love U.S, right? Like most of other chinese, I have concerns about the problems of pollution, human rights, free speeches in China, which the government seems not doing enough, but its really getting better and better. Olympics means a lot to Chinese peopole, who clean the hourse, prepare the dinner and wait for the guests around the world. So please please don't be too hard on them, just give them a sign they are not rejected by the rest of the world. Got to beijing, if u have time. About the visa to china, it seems it become difficult and take a longer time to get one. I am sorry about that, that is just what CCP do when they get nervous, like the states after 9/11, I hope u understand.
