Posted in: The most annoying people you’ll meet at a Japanese fitness gym See in context

when i workout there's this one girl who is always commenting on how muscular my thighs are and stares at me intensely while i do squats but i suppose that's partially my fault since i take my pants off to prevent them from ripping

she also asks me what i want for dinner and to help find her cell phone charger sometimes but that's the price you pay when you have a gym at home...

Electromagnetic radiation from prolonged cell phone usage has been linked to increased risk of Thyroid cancer as well... so don't go out buying hazmat suits to wear while you picket TEPCO offices with pitchforks and torches just yet

Posted in: How do you feel when you speak fluent or reasonably good Japanese to a Japanese person and they insist on answering you in English? See in context

sometimes getting a response directed at the people you are with can be a boon, such as when at city hall or other tediously bureaucratic places...

even though i started the conversation, they will turn and answer to my wife which means it's time to turn my brain off and sit around as decorative meat... one of my fortes

i make it a point to take my dates somewhere on the upper scale of things like the orchestra or a hotel restaurant with a view. the key is to choose a place that shows refined taste, sophistication and serious intentions for the relationship.

It has also inspired offshore spinoffs in such unexpected sketch comedy outposts as Brazil, Italy and Japan.

the Saturday Night Live in Japan lasted 4 episodes... which was 4 episodes longer than it should have lasted

maybe I've become desensitized by raunchy comedies over the years, but it seems like the version of Crayon Shin-Chan on tv these days is nowhere near as risqué as the one that aired when I was a growing up...

my sense was that they toned it down to try and repair the reputation that it had as being a bad influence for children

Posted in: Denso fined $2.2 million in Canada for violation of competition law See in context

Residents of Japan pay a HUGE price for the rampant price fixing in this country, its also why so many companies in Japan are very weak financially.

pardon my ignorance but how does price fixing result in weak finances for a company? in a vacuum (barring the fines that are incurred due to the practice) wouldn't it result in bigger profit margins?

Posted in: Drop a coin, grab a snack: Kiosk-in-a-box spreads in Japan See in context

a lot of japanese people i've talked to still mistakenly believe that sugar, the actual sugar that comes overloaded in confectionery snacks, is a productive way to fuel your brain... so i can see how this would sell well

laziness and junk food... a winning combination! (kind of like news sites and advertising editorials)

Posted in: Breaking the rules See in context

i've heard some economists posit that smokers are better for the economy, seeing as how they tend to die sooner and as a result cost the state less in pensions, medical check ups and end of life care compared to a non-smoker

if that's true... then we should be thanking these smokers for reducing the burden on an already overstretched system

Posted in: Police crack down on loophole drugs after spate of traffic accidents See in context

So we are supposed to feel SORRY for the idiot loop hole drug shop owners but JUST FORGET about all of the vicitms of these SELFISH idiots who have taken so many innocent lives

if we replace the words "loop hole drug shop" with the word "bar" would you feel the same way? just asking, since alcohol contributes to 300+ drunk driving deaths in japan every year and virtually none of it gets news coverage.

Prohibition taught us that making something illegal, makes it more dangerous.

yep... the legal status of cannabis has forced the creation of these synthetic cannabinoids. take it one step further, and the banning of the earlier versions of synthetic cannabinoids (which didn't make you pass out and were generally well tolerated by the body) only resulted in the need for newer synthetic cannabinoids to be created that come with far worse side effects.

along with the fact that by having these substances exist in the legal gray area of "not being sold for human consumption", manufacturers/chemists/dealers don't have to go through any of the regulatory procedures of other food substances. the end result being there is no information on what is contained in them and no way for consumers to mitigate the dangers.

lawmakers are far too naive to realize that when there is a demand for getting messed up, people will find ways to do so, regardless of the law. therefore, the best way to reduce harm is through education, regulation and transparency, not by condemnation and criminalizing.
