@Swift justice: He is a criminal. This is my point. Am I right or am I wrong?

Your logic is too simplistic here. The public policy of criminal laws is to prevent harm to society. This means that criminal laws that don't prevent harm are doing more harm than good.

@Swift_Justice: My logic is simplistic because the jury is still out on the pros and cons of MJ. There's a lot of "may do this", and "could cause that". Medicinal use and recreational use are two COMPLETELY different things IMO.

Then there's the people who compare it to alcohol or tobacco, and say it's less harmful but could bring in a lot of income and trade... IMO, when you have any product that can be chemically addictive and can be easily abused, the pros and cons should undergo EXTENSIVE review of whether or not it would be a positive for society. That's why the US federal law still considers possession of MJ ILLEGAL.

With all of that said, I have never said that I am against legalizing MJ, but the fact of the matter is, this idiot who "had it all" (money, fame, etc.) knew it is illegal, and now he's a criminal. My logic may be simplistic (in your eyes), but is it wrong?

Legalize or don't legalize is beside the fact. He broke the law so he's a criminal.

Posted in: Do you believe there is intelligent life on other planets? See in context

Aly Rustom May 22  04:24 pm JST

Yes. there must be. There are BILLIONS of galaxies out there. Ours holds 8 planets. Others might hold more, and there are billions of them. So the law of probability says that there must be life somewhere else. I can't believe for one second that we are alone in the cosmos. No way

If I may expand on that, the Milky Way (our galaxy) is 100,000 light years in diameter... 100,000!!! It would take 100,000 YEARS, travelling at the speed of LIGHT to travel across our galaxy!!! ...and there are over 100 BILLION galaxies out there!!! (scientists say there are possibly 200 billion!) Inconceivable! There has GOT to be other intelligent life out there. We just don't know how to reach each other...

The kid has been arrested 3 times already and obviously doesn't plan on improving his behavior any time soon.

Charge the bully's parents for all of those crimes and send him to a boarding school or the self defense forces.

I don't believe in capital punishment. Give him solitary confinement for life, and a rope.

"...accusations of mistreating travelers with a disability are taken seriously."

Shouldn't accusations of mistreating ALL travelers be taken seriously? Ever heard of human rights?

Obviously tragic for the victim and her family... but I feel for the man's family as well, that is, assuming of course he has one, being the head of the PTA. And being the head of the PTA he probably has kids attending the same school??? Unbelievable. His family now has live with this and probably move far away from all of this now and try to recover. They probably can't even wait until he his indicted because of the attention/harassment they will receive.

Yes, kids will be kids... even if parents persistently teach them, they still don't listen at times (especially at 6 yrs old). I just see it as a very tragic accident. Personally, if there are parked cars blocking my view, I make it a habit to look for kids' "feet" through the underside of those cars as I drive.

Also, suspend or terminate the teachers and principals involved, with severe cuts to their pay as well. Blackball them from ever teaching or presiding over a school again.

The school may be the first line of defense, but don't you think the parents should take more responsibility than the teachers??? Teachers might have to be relied on to identify the bullying and enforce rules at school, but after all that's said and done, parents are responsible for their children's actions.

Why not change the laws for 2 weeks? If you have a house guest who's allergic to peanuts, you're not going to serve anything with nuts, right?

What do you expect from a culturally and ethnically homogeneous country that doesn't like change? I like Dango bong's idea.

I do not think you need to sell your soul, change your culture and laws and appease Westerners just to host a 2 week event.

@Viking68

You may be right IF mj were legalized. But my point is if it is illegal and people buy/use it (ie there demand) then they're supporting a lot more than just a "harmless" high in their own home. By your reasoning, why don't we legalize cocaine if it rids the world of cartels?

Posted in: Ex-actress Saya Takagi gets suspended term for marijuana possession See in context

It's not a victim-less crime because it's illegal in so many countries. That means that people farming/processing it are probably victims of cartels, and the casualties that come from law enforcement officials (and their families) who are fighting those cartels and innocent people being caught up in that fight are also victims. I'm not opposed to MJ (don't do it myself), but to call it a victim-less crime is being ignorant to all of the possible effects and implications.

Posted in: Bullying keeps youth suicides high in Japan See in context

To summarize the article, in 1986, a 13 y.o. boy hanged himself after being bullied by students AND teachers, in 2003, the number of suicides peaked at 34,427, in 2013, they FINALLY passed an anti-bullying legislation, then in 2015-16 we had 224,540 cases of reported bullying, and now this Director of "whatever" for the Ministry of Education says: "I don't think the law has been functioning effectively...." .......duh! ....and now we have this case in Tokyo where they make STUDENTS take the lead in preventing bullying?!?!?! To the parents, teachers, schools, and government: Stop being so ignorant, negligent, and irresponsible. Stop it already.
