So a chemist or conbini or wherever that now sells a mask for more than it paid the wholesaler or manufacturer is guilty of a crime?

No, Selling at normal retail prices is perfectly fine.

I thought it was up to 5 years... Must have missed something. Was that the original proposal and it got limited to 1?

There isn't enough information here for me to decide he should be hoisted. Did he flag the gouging? or did someone else?

If he put a bunch of masks he happened to have on hand up for sale on an auction site in early Feb expecting they'd sell for a few thousand and then turned around to see they'd sold for tens of thousands, quickly stopped the auctions after 89 sales had been made, I'd cut him some slack. If he kept on selling after seeing the shortage and thefts from nursing homes and health care centers unfold, he's a dickhead who should not be in public office.

Odds are still better to win the loto.

But the problem with the Corona is that if the whole population gets infected, it will be a huge number of deaths like the Spanish flu.

I think you have this exactly backwards.

Odds of winning the lotto are much lower.

The death rates (by best estimates of current data) are lower than the 1918 "spanish" flu.

It is spreading like that flu, but not killing as swiftly and broadly. That one was especially deadly to the young and healthy - again, the exact opposite of Covid-19.

Here is the  risk of dying if infected with COVID-19.

AGE: DEATH RATE

*80+ years old: 14.8%

70-79 years old: 8.0%

60-69 years old: 3.6%

50-59 years old: 1.3%

40-49 years old: 0.4%

30-39 years old: 0.2%

20-29 years old: 0.2%

10-19 years old: 0.2%

0-9 years old: no fatalities

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/coronavirus-age-sex-demographics/

The woman's whose 16 year-old has a runny nose should chill out and treat it like a normal flu. KEEP THE KID AT HOME. Keep an eye on his temperature. Don't plug up the ER as long as he's doing ok. Even if he tested positive, it would be the same thing. Same as testing positive for the flu. STAY HOME. Sleep. Get fluids. Keep an eye on the the body temp.

Are they going to release the data of people who were cured after the treatment?

You can find "outcomes" (death or recovery) data here, broken down by country.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

It has said on the page *"Coming soon: Country-specific pages (with live statistics and graphs for each country and region). Follow us on twitter to receive a notification as soon as they are published,*" since at least Monday, but I haven't seen anything yet.

The good news is, S. Korea's new cases appear to be leveling off. The government has taken some drastic measures and, as in China, that appears to be working.

Meanwhile the government of Japan is sitting on it's collective hands.

BurningBush,

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

Why do you think Japan has 50 serious/critical cases out of only 161 confirmed domestic infections, verses every other population (ie 6/977 in Korea; 35/691 from the Diamond Princess.)

Japan is only testing the very ill and their immediate families. The numbers being tested in Japan are miniscule.

Best wishes for a complete and speedy recovery, Zichi!

I watched a nice little documentary series on the 1918 flu pandemic last night. Apparently, in Japan it was known as the "sumo flu" since one of the first big transmission events was a sumo basho.

It's easy to look back and see all the mistakes made during that pandemic.

It's sad to see so many of the same decisions being made (or not made) today.

Thunderbird:

Even Ebola didn't have this mad hysteria and more people died from that!

Apples and oranges, my friend. Ebola is actually difficult to catch, if you aren't in direct contact will the bodily fluids of an infected person and it kills quickly, which is why it doesn't spread far.

You'd be better off comparing Covid-19 to SARS, MERS and recent avian and swine flus.

MERS was deadly, but hard to catch. Only people whose immune systems were already compromised caught it, and that's why it didn't spread far.

SARS spread quite easily because some carriers didn't get sick. And it spread within hospitals. (Ebola won't do that, with basic precautions.

This one seems to spread like wildfire. Lots of asymptomatic positives walking around. It doesn't seem particularly deadly for the young and healthy, but with more than half the population being over 60, Japan's hospitals could very easily be overwhelmed. Ditto Italy. Ditto South Korea. (And if it takes out 10-15% of patients in their 70s, that could be a big hit to the LDP members as well as their voting base.)

Not the countries I was expecting, but it makes sense for all those small islands to isolate themselves.

Only 158 confirmed cases in Japan as of yesterday. More today. Not clusters, so it is in the wild, widespread and few people are being tested here. (The government is ramping up testing, but it is still glaciar-paced, compared to S. Korea.)

The cruise cases are not counted as domestic infections, as those cases were infected in isolation. They are included in the Japan numbers when looking at the hospital capacity, as they are being treated in Japan.

Posted in: China, South Korea report more virus cases See in context

"South Korea reported 60 more cases of the new virus, bringing its total to 893. Cases there now outnumber Japan,"

That should read, "confirmed cases there now outnumber Japan."

I have little doubt that there are more than 893 cases floating around in Hokkaido alone, given how broadly and randomly it's been popping up.

Aly, the cruise ship will usually be counted separately, as all those infections happened in isolation to the rest of the country, especially when people are talking about or looking at the spread of the infection. If you are discussing the healthcare load and capacity of hospitals, it makes sense to lump them together with domestically acquired cases.

For the time that everyone was isolated on the cruise ship, they weren't mixing with the rest of the population and that cluster was not the source of all the other mini clusters popping up everywhere. Of course, now that people were allowed off the ship and into onto trains and buses with the rest of us, they may contribute to additional domestic spread.

Posted in: Japan to step up checks on those who left ship after testing negative See in context

I saw on the TV news this morning that South Korea has already tested over 20,000 people while Japan has only tested 1500 of the general public (not on the cruise ship). Now I begin to understand how the number of confirmed cases in Japan is so low, despite the clear spread around the country. Why the hell are we not in lock down? Non-essential travel cancelled. Events cancelled.

I look forward to seeing the next Field Briefing, as this only shows the onset dates from up to the 15th, and it looks like the onboard quarantine was mostly working.
