Posted in: Firm told workers at Fukushima plant to lie about radiation dose See in context

For me the critical question I would like to be asked and checked upon is this - what is present status and how are these nine workers doing today? I dont see this critical information covered in any reports that I came across. Anyone knows this can you please share the same? I am sure this is not the last such scandal and we can expect more things to come out as time goes by.... Meanwhile I hope the nine workers are safe and doing well. I dont think being contract workers they would have necessary medical coverage.

The pay is not JY 2500 per hour - but for whole day pay is JY 2500 - which works out to JY 200 per hour pay rate - article clearly mentions this. Agree with others, I cannot imagine why should anyone want to do this, unless they were ignorant and not aware of actual work conditions. Would be interesting to hear a follow up on this as to how many of these 160 people actually returned to do it one more time knowing the work conditions - that would definitely defy any logic.

Been with ANA for last 15 years now and completely satisfied. In particular they have invested and upgraded their English web page for foriengers living in Japan, added many new online features, made it easy to work. Service is excellent, ontime record is great. They have upgraded their inflight entertainment system but still lacks better ones like on Singapore airlines. One major disappointment is their lack of any flights to Australia. Japanese people like to travel to Australia so find it strange why they dont have this route on their international flights.

Sad to hear in such beautiful place.. Were any foreign people impacted? News does not cover this part. Also family of driver accepted he had seizures and also agreed this was 100% their fault as they should have revoked his driving license. RIP.

Shocking and depressing to see how far things have come to. RIP. more disturbing is the fact that neighbours saying that they did not see them since Nov month, but no one bothered to check on them if everything was ok or not.....

Check out the link provided by Mabodofulspicy - it gives details in English. As per this immigration office site EVERY card, including Permanent Resident status cards will have a validity period mentioned on the card. For PR holders who are 16 yrs or older, the validity is seven years. So before this, a PR holder still needs to go and renew the card I guess. Below is the text from this site - The resident card has a “valid period” The valid period of the resident card will be as follows: Permanent resident: 16 years or older 7 years from the date of issuance Less than 16 years old Until the foreign national’ s 16th birthday Persons other than permanent residents: 16 years or older The expiration date of the period of stay Less than 16 years old Whichever comes earlier, the expiration date of the period of stay, or the individual’s 16th birthday

Posted in: Deep south: Living the slow life in Okinawa See in context

Good article and agree with views of the writer. Having lived in Tokyo for more than 12 years IshigakiJima and TakeomiJima are our favorite relaxing sopts. Been there four times so far and never get tired of the place. The Minishuku owners at TaketomiJima are wonderful, old age, lots of experience, great conversation, warm heart, great food - partiularly like Kakuni, sanuki udon and goya champal.... If you want to get away from the busy life in Tokyo, Ishigaki ans Taketomi are ideal sops, with not much to do, but kick back, relax on a beach, read books, talk to native people, great food...

Posted in: If you found a bag with a huge amount of cash, say 10 million yen, would you hand it in to the authorities or keep it? See in context

Return the money - absolutely. For me personally that would be the right thing to do, since it is not MY money. I need to be able to look myself in the mirror the next day with a straight face..... You do not need to do something for someone but do the RIGHT thing.

Again personally married to the most amazing girl 13 year back and still madly in love with my wife - them being cold, stiff and rigid - depends on the partner too :) My end, absolutely no complaints on this front - depends on how you treat and make of your marriage.

great comments and happy to see mostly positive experiences. Myself married to Japanese girl now for last 13 years. Wife is 10 years elder to me and completely agree - does not matter whether you are from same religion, same culture, same age, similar education background, same nationality etc etc... I believe what matters most is whether you can have mutual trust, respect and love for each other - if even one of these three is missing it will be difficult to sustain the marriage (irrespective whether international or same nationality). Agree completely - secret sauce for successful marriage apart from Trust, Respect and Love should be - communication, accept the person for who he/she is, do not try/expect them to change, ability to make other smile with simple everyday things.

Posted in: Forestry Agency to test Fukushima cedar pollen for radioactivity See in context

remains to be seen how authentic and forthcoming this new report will be. Even if the results show radioactivity, what are options for normal people? Stop going outside? Wear normal mask like every year and pretend they are radioactive proof? Expect another new topic to increase the ever present anxiety without any clear answers/precautionary measures available.

For people who are working as Japan employee, earning in J Yen and are based outside Japan on expat basis, this is a great time. Same amount of J Yen can buy much more local currency in foriegn country. I have been lucky to enjoy this for last two years now :).

Posted in: Japan to take 'decisive action' against yen's rise: report See in context

More talk, no actual action. Even if Japanese government take any action, it will have minimal impact as other countries will not support or join this action. End result will be short term depreciating J Yen and then market rates will prevail, which would hover around 76 rate of today.....

Posted in: Shareholder groups call for investigation into Olympus deals See in context

As usual everything will be swept under the carpet, someone will be identified as scapegoat, press conference will be called, there will be mass bowing with Taihen Moushiwakearimasen deshita comments and the media will forget about this as some new scandal will breakout. The person whowas made scapegoat will be taken care of by the system by an offer in some sister company or one of affiliate companies cushy jobs- nothing new here, same old same old.... Been watching this for past 12 years, nothing has changed and doubt if it will change going forward too.

It is individual choice after all. But I think this is good marketing on behalf of BK since they have returned to Japanese market and they need to create awareness and pull for customers.
