@Darren Brannan

"The disappearance of that little girl in Oita still remains unsolved. A week or so before her abduction an eldery person was murdered and the day before her abduction a 35 yr old woman just disappeared. All in one town. All unsolved cases. Don't know what town this happened in but Oita is looking like a nasty place at the moment. There was that murder in beppu too"

I did not think of that until you brought it to light....hmm may some sort of connection............

@DisillusionedOct.

"Ha! Yeah, easy to read, for sure, but understanding why it happened is quite difficult. What the heck is wrong with these people? Nearly every day you read about someone snapping and taking to others with a knife. Yesterday it was a carpenter attacking his neighbor with a hatchet. Is everyone so strung out the only reaction they have is to kill someone? Shees!!!"

I wonder does the "ongoing aftermath" have something related to the increase.

Posted in: NHK president pledges crackdown on artists with yakuza ties for 'Kohaku Uta Gassen' See in context

Creation:17th century Yakuza 893 (ヤクザ or やくざ ), also known as gokudō (極道), are members of traditional organized crime syndicates in Japan. The Japanese police, and media by request of the police, call them bōryokudan (暴力団), literally "violence group", while the yakuza call themselves "ninkyō dantai" (任侠団体 or 仁侠団体), "chivalrous organizations". The yakuza 893 are notoriously known for their strict codes of conduct and very organized nature. They are very prevalent in the Japanese media and operate internationally with an estimated 102,400 members.

Principal clans: Yamaguchi-gumi, Sumiyoshi-kai, (Tokyo) and Inagawa-kai

Yakuza 893 often take part in local festivals such as Sanja Matsuri where they often carry the shrine through the streets proudly showing off their elaborate tattoos.

Posted in: U.S. eases travel alert around Fukushima nuclear plant See in context

Well a paradigm shift may be in effect, people with good jobs and good pay (officers and GS 11 and above living on/off bases in Japan who have US medical and dental services, SOFA status and fairly decent paid military retirees w/base access in Japan are now living much better than most Japanese in Japan, particularly if a catastrophe occurs, they would be notified if radiation levels warrant evacuation, and probably be airlifted out much faster as well as US embassy staff in such an event......

Posted in: Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant worker dies See in context

@Johannes Weber

"The discussion is waged on an unscientific level. If the dosimeters and Geiger counters reported a gamma exposure of 2 mSv that is really not a big deal. However, anybody assuming that safety standards are properly maintained at Fukushima Daiichi and that there is no significant amount of alpha emitters around is just plainly naive (or stupid or probably both).

If this guy incorporated alpha emitters (like plutonium in solution in tiny water droplets in wet air), then he had been on a certain downward path towards a painful death. Due to the fact that I know how carelessly many Japanese people treat their own safety and health, this is the most probable reason for his demise.

How on earth could anyone be so stupid to look at the gamma dose only? It enrages me as a nuclear physicist to read things like this! More clear indications of whitewashing and unprofessional handling of the accident!"

MANY THANKS

please keep us advised especially in the case of discussions by JT on Tokyo's levels of such exposure information etc.

again many thanks!

Excellent point!!!...smithinjapanSep. 30, 2011 - 09:01AM JST

I'm glad that on top of the fine some of the execs involved in the bid-rigging will see prison cells. It could easily have been just a fine and the guilty plea, and probably would have been if it were in Japan (or else a prison sentence 'suspended').

Keep cracking down on these companies! I just hope they're being fair and targeting any and ALL companies, national and international, and not just the Japanese.

You should have seen what the US news and some US citizens and US lawyers said...they basically said they will not tolerate such criminal type of corp behavior from them...and will start to push for "removal of their licenses to operate in the US if necessary".... Finally the US Justice system is starting to wake up to them!...

They need to raise the taxes on the Yaks, tobacco products, Tepco and its employees, pachinkos, and all the adult entertainment places in Japan first. Oyeah with all the money Ozawa has,l that M.F. could fix his own home town in Iwate himself.

BTW many Japanese are leaving this country for Thailand, becuse they knew they would be hit with the clean up/rebuilding cost for the blunders their leaders failed to plan for and all the hidden and censored corruption-btw this was Japanese telling me this, so I guess Ishihara pronounced them non-jn's
