Amazing that the little orange color 2-story house in the lower right hand corner survived...

Posted in: Gov't feared nuclear crisis would engulf Tokyo, report shows See in context

I rarely post here...mainly read (with great enjoyment I must say). But I feel I must say that the actions carried out by former PM Kan of preventing TEPCO from fully evacuating Fukushima Daiichi during those first few days may have been one of the most important yes/no decisions any post war PM in Japan has had to make. What if he had caved, felt sympathetic and allowed them to evacuate? I assume that the 3 or 4 reactors would have gone into a more intense, out of control, and non-monitored meltdown. I also understand Kan drove directly to the TEPCO offices with no advance notice (doubt he really needs it) and told the TEPCO CEO that under no circumstances were they to evacuate. His reasons why they could not evacuate may be questioned (ie. "If you evacuate, TEPCO will be demolished/broken up") when I would have thought something more along the lines of, "most of Kanto may need to be evacuated if the Fukushima Daiichi reactors go into full blown, out of control meltdowns". Anyhow, glad he did what he did.

My kids and I visited the family in the US last fall and we all got our flu shots (covers H1N1, H2N3 and a couple other strains) for US$20.00 each at the local pharmacy (CVS) even though we didn't have any US medical insurance. Sure wish they could have an accessible and affordable system like that here.

Was there (Ariake Stadium) yesterday and those are the ball boys and ball girls....they only do this between the matches and apparently they pick up all the ball lint and any bits of dirt or sand particles - sorta like those swifter brooms...Personally never seen it done before and also question why each "rag/towel" is so darn small.

Several years ago there was quite a bit of news coverage re the mistreatment and slaughtering of these bears in these so-called "parks". The Japanese press of course didn't cover it much until a foreign news report caught wind of it and got it a bit of attention. News re these bear parks has generally fallen off the radar since then. Could only find this old Animal Planet report but odds are with the way the economy is now that conditions couldn't be that much better. http://animal.discovery.com/news/briefs/20031208/bears.html

my close friend is from Minamisoma and the town of approx 75,000 falls between the 20 to 30 km "voluntary" evacuation zone and there are over 25,000 or so ppl still there with a number returning recently. Weird that these dogs are all the same breed though....

The rent levels noted in this article are exaggerated. 1 bdrms are currently renting for under JPY400,000/month in the main towers - not cheap, but nowhere near JPY1m/month. Also can't believe Lehmans not noted in this article - largest US bankruptcy in history and was the second largest tenant in RoppHills after GS.

Posted in: Taxi driver See in context

I learnt fairly recently that practically all taxis operated by major taxi companies here in Tokyo run on LPG gas (natural gas). They are also not affected that much by the fluctuation in oil prices. Kojin taxis (white ones) are usually running on regular fuel but in return the cars are usually alot nicer. Saying that, the cabbies here in general keep their cabs relatively clean which is a good thing.
